Find cache. Open Cache. Sign Log. Maybe trade something. Return everything as it was or better. Sounds pretty simple and fun. 🙂

I’m happy to see that kmhiker came back and posted 🙂

I didn’t mean to offend “the community” with my nonsense comment. I was frustrated and expressed said frustration in my tone. I didn’t target any one person with my frustration. It was really the topic itself.

As s|s said which sorta reiterated my point, play the game how you want. It sounds like you have made up your mind on how you’d like to play and that’s what matters most now doesn’t it?

in reply to: What’s the point of geocoins? #1909208

I am a coin collector (not geocoin) and have very little interest in growing a huge collection of these as a “coin”. I will usually keep them (new unactivated ones) and when the time is right, release them. Most of the geocoins I have released are either missing or have no recent logs on them. Same thing goes for my released travel bugs. Have had many of the travel bugs we made drop off the map as well. However, this does not discourage me. Here’s a story to put it into perspective:

When I first started geocaching I had traveled on business to Georgia. On one of my very first cache finds, I located a “Caching With Kids” geocoin. Had no clue what Geocoins were.

I took it back with me to Wisconsin as I was planning on showing my kids about geocaching and that fit perfectly with the coin and it’s mission.

For me, finding that single geocoin is one of the many things that intrigued me about this hobby. Who would put such a neat item out into the world? Even then I understood that these types of items probably disappear quickly never to be seen again. Yet here one was for me to choose to move along in the spirit of the game.

I share this story because this is the main reason I still release geocoins. I release them with the hopes that someone will enjoy finding one for the first time. I release them with the hopes that someone will actually follow it’s mission and log that they had fun doing so. Hopefully they will enjoy moving one of mine around. I don’t hope for a coin to move 35,000 miles. I hope for someone to enjoy moving one of these around like I did for the first time. I enjoy reading the “trackables” logs almost more than find logs on my caches because those who do move them along and take the time to log them usually have the most interesting stories to tell!

Yeah there’s a lot of “hoping” involved in releasing a geocoin. However, I “keep it real”. I didn’t have to read this thread to know that they all disappear. People loot caches all the time. Doesn’t matter if it’s a geocoin or some other trinket. Don’t expect much if you release a geocoin. But you can always hope that someone will enjoy the fact that you did.

For me, Geocoins are as much a part of the geocaching experience as ammo cans and a gps are.

Events should be for socializing, not be out and about all day and just be there for the picture.

I agree with you if the event is 3 hours long. The camp-out is technically a 2+ day event where you camp at a state park. For those of us who camped there with our families and walked the trails, we enjoyed having caches to go hunt. Temp or perm status is irrelevant to my kids. They loved stamping the books with all of the stamps in the temp caches.

For those who camped there were plenty of opportunities to socialize but you can’t sit and socialize for 2+ days. At least I can’t.

As many may know, I hid temp and permanent caches for this event. I got personal input on some of the temps and enjoyed reading all the logs on the perms. Personally I think temp caches still have value at all weekend camp-out type events. I have given input as a campout committee member that the board will hopefully carry forward and consider for the next camp-out regarding how the WGA could potentially make the temp caching activity “count more”. For those who participated, it makes sense to acknowledge that participation somehow.

If I was single and into collecting smiley’s and not from the appleton area, I would certainly have left the park and hunted for smileys. But there were all kinds of cachers at the event (some 250 of them!) and the WGA attempts to hold an event that will hopefully please some of those people. If you don’t want to hunt temps, there’s no one putting a gun to your head. There were many people who were out on the trails hunting temps that whole weekend and I saw smiling faces and fun being had.

This is my last 2 cents on this topic.

I answered the question the original poster asked. All the rest of these posts are nonesense and don’t help the poster with what they wanted.

I figured this thread might turn into that old can of worms again…

See my post for the appropriate answer to your question. If you want to go find a cache in Milwaukee and log it multiple times and note on it which temp cache you found in Sherwood, WI then read more about this in some of the other posts.

I am on neither side of the “argument” and therefore Marc, you cannot disagree with me. I was merely answering their question. I was on the camp-out comittee on a WGA held event and answered it appropriately based on that role. I was not stating my opinion on the subject of logging multiple attended logs on an event for finding temp caches.

If the cache you found has a cache page and ID on geocaching.com you can log your finds on the website.

In the event book there were caches labeled “Temp” and caches labeled Permanent. The Temp caches were the ones with a spot for a stamp. Those temp ones cannot really be “logged” anywhere. Those are the one’s that were an activity of the event.

So yes, if you found some of the permanent caches while at High Cliff (such as Fish Out of Water, Little Blond Boys Cache, Rocky Road, etc.) go ahead and log your finds 🙂

Do as I say, not as I do?

I get where marc is coming from in the initial “plea” but when not even he follows what he is proposing, we know how successful it will be.

I think geocaching.com should require unique cache names by state.

in reply to: Archived cache at groundspeak? #1909062

And they allow finds on it after being archived. You’d think they would unarchive it. What’s the point of it being archived?

If you follow groundpseak logic and their guidelines, this should be a waymark not a geocache and they should lock the listing from any additional logs. But alas, it’s their game, company, and treasure chest in the lobby.

Pretty cool place to visit though I’m sure.

Sounds like my googly eye cache. I would never have bought hundreds of googly eyes from walmart on 2 separate trips.
