01/27/2016 at 1:05 pm in reply to: Candidate Question | Enlisting the help of the Membership #2046546I believe that the members of the WGA are the most important part of the organization. Without the members there would not be a WGA. While the members of the BOD are very important to help facilitate the events, if the members do not attend, purchase merchandise, etc. there is no need for the BOD. How can we utilize the talents of the organization? I think that this can be done by getting to know fellow WGA members more. Perhaps expand the info listed in profiles to include an option to list talents or other hobbies, where the information can be looked at based on needs of the WGA. Another idea would be to have a new thread where members can answer questions based on possible needs of the WGA. Are you willing to volunteer? Can you place caches? Can you host events? The candidates had to give introductions on themselves, perhaps there’s a place where WGA members can do this also.

Jumped out of an airplane? Nope, not a chance. I’m terrified of heights, well more afraid of the falling…. 🙂

Ugg…I honestly could not vote for either of them. I’ll second labzone’s vote for Mickey Mouse!

I’d possibly be interested in helping out. Where and when will the event be held?

I think the WGA can keep a lively online presence by utilizing the different functions on social media, such as groups and events, in addition to having the forums here. I like the event function, as I’m able to save items directly to my calendar, as well as share the events with friends. Events show up in the news feeds, and others are able to see what events are going on around them. I’ve found out about some really great events that way.

01/19/2016 at 7:26 am in reply to: CANDIDATE QUESTION|What is your relationship with the WGA? #2046244I started geocaching at the end of August 2014. I wanted to know more about geocaching, so I reached out to my good friend Google, and came across the WGA. I noticed that they were going to be hosting a camping event at High Cliff State Park in May of 2015, so I decided to sign up and go. I had a blast, and met some awesome people. I’ve been to most of the events since then, and look forward to many more. I pop into the forums from time to time. I don’t post all that often, but do on occasion.

Hands down my favorite tree are the great oaks. They’re amazing and have this wonderful old feel to them. Anytime I visit New Orleans, one stop I must make is to see these magnificent trees. Here’s a photo from a visit to the Oak Alley Plantation.

Can I go the distance? Absolutely! I took a little time to think things over before accepting the nomination. After careful decision, I accepted only after I could honestly say that I have the time, and desire to devote my time and energy to the WGA. For me, I do not like doing things half way, if I’m in, I’m all in.

The role the WGA plays in today’s geocaching world is still very important. With more people having access to geocaching through use of various apps on smart phones, I think it’s critical that the WGA helps to educate and inform the new group of geocachers. There really isn’t any other group like the WGA in Wisconsin, at least that I’m aware of, so that makes the role even more critical in providing support and information to geocachers of Wisconsin, and even to those outside the state, who may not have those resources available to them. The WGA hosts events at various parks, which helps support our Wisconsin parks, as well as give back to them by performing cito, or helping to control evasive plants that may not happen otherwise.

At school last semester, there was another student who sat next to me who was very frustrated and just not understanding the final assignment that the teacher had given us to do. We had several weeks to work on the project, and it was coming due and she had not started working on the project. She had talked with the teacher, and it just wasn’t clicking with her as to what she really needed to do. She pretty much had given up. I encouraged her that she should not give up, that she could do it, and that I would walk her through everything that she needed to do. She was grateful for the help, but was still very frustrated and hopeless. The next two weeks we worked together on her project. Things started slowly, but when she finally got it, she lit up, and smiled! Whoo, success! She finally had clarity, and was able to finish the project.

Currently I have only been a finder. I’ll admit I have been a little nervous in hiding any caches, as I want to make sure that I do it correctly, and that I am able to properly maintain them. Last summer someone was offering a few of their caches up for adoption, so I took over 4 of them as a way of getting my feet wet. Recently I took on two more. I’ve had to replace a few containers, but it’s been really fun seeing the logs and comments on them. I have a few containers now, thanks to labzone, and I’m looking forward to placing a few of my own this spring.

In addition to working full time, I am also enrolled in school part time. One aspect of school that I’m not particularly fond of is working in groups. I have never had an issue in working on group projects at work, but in school it’s been quite a challenge in dealing with others who are not as motivated in doing well, as I am. In an online class I had, the teacher created groups for us to work on a research report that we were then to create a power point presentation on. The other groups were setup with 5 students, where the group I was placed in only had 4. I sent out a message to my group, and asked how the other three wanted to handle the project. I received feedback from two of the students, and we talked about how we were going to divide the tasks of the report up. I took the initiative of taking on the extra tasks that the 5th member would have done. After a few more messages, and no response from the 4th member, our group was down to 3. I sent a message to the teacher letting her know what was going on, and she said that all tasks still needed to be completed. The other two students had little desire to take on any more work than they were already doing, so I took on the extra research that needed to be done. After compiling our information, I asked the other two how they wanted to do the power point presentation. I suggested that we could meet up at school and work on the presentation together; however, the other two were less than thrilled about that suggestion. Running short on time, and wanting to get the presentation done, I created the power point presentation. I sent it to the others in the group to provide feedback, or make any changes to it if necessary. No changes were made, and the presentation and report was submitted. I’m happy to say that we did get an A on the project. While taking on extra work is not fun, it sometimes needs to happen in accomplishing your goals, or to see a project succeed. Do what needs to be done to get the job done, so that you can move on and celebrate in your success!

Reliable –
An attribute for the WGA to be successful would be reliability. An organization cannot run smoothly without help from others. Having dependable people to rely on, and trust to help out in any way, is very important. Like the quote says “You are only as good as your word, and your word is only as good as your actions.” I am a strong believer in this, and take pride in knowing that I can be counted on.
