I don’t have a strong opinion on this.  I do have somewhat poor vision so a micro in the woods will often be harder for me to find than it’s difficulty rating might indicate, especially if there’s any sort of evergreen tree at GZ, but I still look for them.  I won’t lie, I will have a sense of frustration that will start to settle in if I go to a large, cache rich, wooded area and it turns out to be almost all micros….but that’s just a personal preference thing…I don’t necessarily think it’s wrong in a general sense.

Is this one of those games like I used to make the kids play when I was a camp counselor?  Like…I’m going on a trip and I’m bringing a cat…and a carrot….and a crocodile…..What are you bringing?

I once stumbled upon a cache inadvertantly in the middle of a marathon training run.  I went off trail a bit to find a place to do some toilet business and wound up with one of Zuma’s challenge caches less than 4 feet from my face.  I signed the log but it’s been two years since and I still haven’t qualified for it though I hope to one day.  It’s for 10 letterbox finds so it shouldn’t be too excruciating.

I suppose running isn’t really that odd of a hobby though.  If you want to talk odd: Competitive Powerlifting.  Yes, that’s odd for a 42 year old female.  I was in Barron for a meet the day my profile picture was taken.  I had an hour and a half to kill in between the weigh-in and the rules meeting so I went for a walk and made a find as the sun was rising.

Oh, and beekeeping.  To be honest I have yet to cache during official bee business but I plan to score at least a park and grab when I head up to Clear Lake to pick up my nucs this spring….I don’t have the county or the DeLorme page yet so I absolutely wouldn’t miss it.

best bet to find challenge caches that may fit what you are looking for is to look at the bookmark lists on caches in the challenge category like the one you found GC30FG7 200 Days of Caching Challenge

    Ah….yes, yes….Thank you!

I use my computer exclusively.  I do have a friend who caches exclusively with her iPhone and she is quite thorough with it to the point where we have vastly different caching styles.  My idea of caching is you have a general vicinity where you want to cache.  You go there…pull up the list of caches on GPS…use it to route to the nearest GZ and then read through logs/look at the hint etc only if I’m stuck and then log everything at a liesurely pace when I get home.

Her idea of caching is to sit in a coffee shop and do doctoral type research on which caches you want to go after and how you want to approach them.  Before she even gets to GZ she’s consulted several different maps….including aerial photography.  She’s read the hint….she’s read all of the logs…she’s looked at all of the pictures that people have posted etc etc and then she’ll stand around in the woods for 10 minutes each crafting and posting elaborate log entrys that include pictures and so forth.

So, what you seem to be asking is, “Do you feel as if the accomplishment isn’t complete if you don’t find the ‘final'”.  For me….No…It never occured to me to think of it that way.  I’ve been approaching the Challenge Caches like an old-school “Dungeons and Dragons” sort of RPG game….Like, if you reach this or that level, then you get additional areas and treasures that open up for you.

If he/she/it didn’t follow the instructions for verification then they didn’t “do the cache” whether they visited the location or not.  You’re right, though, it would be hard to believe that they went there.  There’s so many EarthCaches out there who’s owners have long ago left the game.  This person was probably surprised that anyone even noticed that they’d logged it.

I personally wouldn’t respond to them at all.  I would delete their log without explaination and save my time and energy for people who want it and appreciate it.

Looks like fun….I just might make it!

My home PQ is set for 1,000 caches in an unlimited radius from my home…so the radius just keeps growing with each cache I find.  It pulls all cache and container types with no limit on attributes.   In short: everything is in play.  I don’t filter out anything.

I would rather be in the woods than in a city and/or at the side of some road but, life circumstances being what they are, I spend far more time in the city than in the woods and I’ll look for a cache pretty much anywhere.

in reply to: How do people do this in the winter? #2033060

So far, so good. I haven’t missed a day yet! It’s possible that I will run out of options before winter expires but I think I’ll at least have a really good dent made here. I’d love to have the daylight come back just a little bit faster than it is but we had a nice mild December and that really helped me so I can’t complain too much.

Most of the puzzle caches around here seem to be field puzzles…or at least the ones that I haven’t found yet are. I just recently learned the trick where you can change the coords on Geocaching.com so that your puzzle solution will go right into your PQ and I’m just dying to use that so hopefully a good armchair solve will come along one of these days!

Yeah, sweetlife, that’ll be about what it looks like here today.

Last night two caches got published at the end of Hamilton Ave (a fairly long very accessible road in Eau Claire). “WH Park and Grab” 1 & 2. I’m crossing my fingers that the CO has a whole run of these planned for all the way down Hamilton because that would really help me!

Here’s a quickie video I just made today about geocaching in winter.

Awww…You made it look so nice and winter wonderland-ish. Thanks for sharing!

Just go out when you feel like caching.

All good points about not trying to do it all at once and not burning myself out but this will be my 3rd winter of caching and I STILL have found absolutely nothing…so clearly this is going to take at least a little bit more of a concerted effort.

I’ll come caching in the winter with you. . Now I just need to find where my snowshoes are packed….

Sweet! Sounds like fun. I have two pairs of snowshoes but I don’t know if either is your size. Speaking of snowshoes, I was thinking I could maybe get out to some of the area island caches once everything freezes over.

I have a sister in Eau Claire who I visit on a regular basis and I’ve left that Clairemont and Highway 93 Bike Trail

Yes! I was thinking I would milk the 93 bike trail whenever I get in a pinch for a quick one. I already have all of the Claremont ones though I know the whole thing got archived and replaced last year and perhaps that’s an annual event?

Lots of good suggestions here. This was exactly the sort of stuff I was hoping for. Thanks everyone!
