Yeah, the little red and black ones are deer ticks. Around here, the ticks in general (wood ticks, deer ticks etc) usually go dormant somewhere around the 4th of July.

However, yes, they DO typically make a comeback in the fall.

WEre the Packers good or were the Vikings bad? Discuss.

I think that the Vikings were so bad that it’s really hard to say if the Packers were good or not. It was so ugly that I actually went to bed after the first half and I almost never do that.

I suspect, but can’t prove, that the Packers offense is sitting pretty but the defense isn’t anywhere near as good as the Vikings made them look.

Yeah, it’s nice to have a quarterback who can get outside the pocket and/or pick up a quick first down when he has a relatively low risk hole to run through and he’s not too stupid to know when to slide down but it’s like some of these teams are looking for the 2nd coming of Michael Vick who can just run all over the field and make everyone look foolish.

It’s exciting and it’s fun to watch and it gives defenses a lot to think about. The problem is that Michael Vick had one in a million speed and even he got the crap beat out of him as soon as he started to lose a step.

I play fantasy football so it gets kind of weird. You wind up rooting for individual guys like, for example, yesterday I had Eddie Lacy and my opponant had Jordy Nelson so I wanted the Packers to win but I wanted it to be all Eddie Lacy and not Jordy. The Packers winning does take priority .

There is a good chance I’ll still win this week in spite of Jordy’s coup and Eddie’s continued struggles. I’m up by 3 points with Rob Gronkowski yet to play tonight…opponent has Travis Kelce.

I don’t know very many other people who cache so I suppose I’m that long lost aunt that moved thousands of miles away and never gets heard from except for maybe a card at Christmas.

I’ve never watched one but I have some that I’ve passed along or simply logged as “discovered” that I’ll go into them through my profile once in a while and check up on them.

Darn it, I check these forums compulsively all day long and I STILL missed a secret!

Oh well. Whatever it is, I’m sure it’ll be fantastic…

Some cachers don’t like Traditional caches, so they do multis, puzzles, letterboxes, etc.

Some cachers don’t like letterboxes, so they…

SOME CACHERS DON’T LIKE EVENTS, SO THEY FIND OTHER WAYS TO BE ACTIVE IN GEOCACHING, LIKE TRADITIONALS, MULTIS, PUZZLES, LETTERBOXES, ETC.

If your not a social person, don’t attend! Or pop in for a few minutes to get an “Attended” credit and leave! Drop a TB for the Race and leave! I don’t mean to sound harsh, but the WGA can not adjust their Event to make non-sociable people suddenly feel warm and fuzzy! It doesn’t work that way, and no one should expect it to!

I understand what you’re saying and I don’t entirely disagree with you.

I highly doubt that people come to the WGA picnic just to get a smiley. That’s what “Last chance Flash Mobs” are for. I think people genuinely do want to be social but, in some cases, they may be falling flat on their faces.

I don’t see a problem with a few minor, easy to implement tweeks for the sake of being more welcoming and for the sake of the image of the organization.

However, yes, there can be a fine line between basic human compassion and babysitting people. We are all adults and it should never get to a point where people are taking personal responsibility for other’s shortcomings.

    Welcome!

What is a “newbie”, really? You have more finds than I do and I’ve been caching for 2 years now.

Welcome! I think I might have walked in the vicinity of Lancaster a million years ago when I was in college. I went through on the “Eagle Walk” which was a 200 mile charity walk that I would do on my spring break. If I remember right we would spend the night in Bloomington.

Anyway…yes…it IS a beautiful part of the state!

I’ve never been to a WGA event but I’d be willing to bet that at least part of this is the fact that social anxiety/phobias are extremely common. People get in a situation where they feel like they’re the only one that doesn’t know anyone eventhough they probably aren’t….and they’re having trouble breaking the ice with people and they get anxious and feel helpless to do anything about it themselves so they put it on other people. “It’s not me that’s completely made myself disappear into the woodwork….It’s them being unwelcoming.” I only know this because I’ve been there. I’ve gotten a lot better with it over the years but, historically, I’ve been pretty extremely social phobic.

Here’s what I would do if it were my event and I felt that all of this was really a problem: I would include, in the schedule, at the beginning of the day a specific time and place for people (individuals…couples….pairs of friends etc) who would like to meet new people to cache with for the day (doesn’t necessarily have to be newbies…just anyone that wants to meet new people and/or not cache alone). The scheduled time would be brief…15-20 minutes tops.

I would have a few friendly outgoing volunteers who have more than a few finds under their belts and who, at least roughly, know the area agree to, almost covertly, attend the meeting and be willing to cache with a sort of potluck buddy or group of buddies.

People could choose to group up with each other or with the volunteers but, primarily, the volunteers role in the meeting would be to grab anybody who is still left standing there like a deer in the headlights at the end of the meeting.

Even if little to no people actually use this option it still sends a message that you’ve made space for the possibility that not everyone is going to know each other and that those who do might actually like to branch out.

Just keep checking for local events near you, or ones you can get too without too much hassle, and you will soon find that you will get to know people, and maybe quite a few more in those smaller settings than you would at a larger event.

Yes, I went to a couple of flash mobs during the August souvenir challenge and they were of quality.

We can say we met her before she showed up here, sharing a really challenging and interesting cache hunt!

Yes! I’ve been caching for two years and you guys are actually the only cachers I’ve ever met just out and about like that. I was really glad to see you because that random guy was creeping me out a little bit….

In my area it better be there because, more often than not, they get published at something like 2AM (our main reviewer must work 2nd shift or something) and the FTF folks WILL jump out of bed immediately to go find it even if it’s 50 below zero and snowing. They would NOT be happy to get there and do an extensive search for a cache that hasn’t been placed yet.

I don’t think they’d be mean about it but you would get razzed and it would not go away….ever.

My big barrier to attending the events is geography. They all (Cache Ba$h, Picnic, CITO events, the upcoming “best beginner cache in the whole universe” event etc) are all in the same basic part of the state which I suppose makes sense since that’s where most of the poppulation is but it’s a 4 1/2 hour trip one way and that’s a long way for me and I just feel very removed from it all…Out of sight…Out of mind.

I can totally understand people gravitating toward who they know especially if it’s people that they don’t get to see very often. I would be the exact same way.

I’m hoping to make it to the “Cache Ba$h” next year and I do have one friend in the area who goes every year so I know I’ll have at least one person to cling to if the big scary popular people try to push me around. I’m trying to keep my schedule open for it but….we’ll see.

I have one that I’ll probably be hiding soon. I don’t know why it wouldn’t hold up, really. Some of the tupperware/lock ‘n’ lock type stuff out there seems to keep things more dry than the metal cans.
