My view is that of a real estate agent:

“Quality” cache = location, location, location.

It’s obvious that we all “see” things from different viewpoints. I would disagree with location, location, location. I like to visit new and interesting places just as much as many of you. I also must admit that the Laughing Waters series was my first intro to S|S puzzles and I loved them. There was a variety and I learned a ton about the city of Menasha from them. I’m a Fox Valley native (lived here all my life) but new very little about Menasha as it turns out. As a “non-Fiction” junkie this was right up my alley. They weren’t all easy finds, in fact I bugged S|S numerous times on some refusing to give up. Each time I asked for (and received) a gentle nudge in the right direction.

To me this is what it’s all about. A mix of location and historical significance (imagine going to Washington DC and viewing the view but not knowing the history). Another great history / location series is the -cheeto- series in downtown Neenah. There are others as well, but my point is that I don’t feel it’s all about the location. There are some beautiful locations, but when coupled with relevant history they become even better.

Wow – I’m just back from vacation, but what a thread to read (and to see the Mascoutin Valley Trail that MuddyBottoms and I did in the lead paragraph).

    My comments:
    1) I have plenty of room for more caches out near me but it’s going to take time to get them placed (if BakRdz doesn’t steal them all on me).
    2) Add puzzle difficulty rating
    3) GC should ignore puzzle finals when considering distance or make it much smaller. If someone’s not doing the puzzle chances are they aren’t going to stumble on the final. As long as it’s a reasonable distance from some other cache.
    4) S|S – keep the puzzles coming. I love these challenges.
    5) If you need help with a puzzle / cache – I suggest always explaining exactly where you are, your method(s), what your assumptions are, etc. I’ve done this with many of the puzzles for both the puzzle and the find. I assumed the algorithm is …. I see a hollow log in the corner of a fence with a do not enter sign …. This way the owner has some idea you’re actually trying or were in the right spot and has a reason to help get you back on track. I’ve also asked questions about my assumptions before banging my head on the wall for few hours – I assume xxxxx means yyyyy.

I’m not even close to a clean slate, but I work in the Fox Valley area, live 25 miles west, and have hunting land another 25 miles SW where we spend about 30 weekends a year. Considering this is the “Land of Sellzup” there is plenty to keep my mind occupied (thanks cheeto, marc, S|S, etc.).

There’s always the option of adding more caches. I probably shouldn’t get on my soapbox here, but it’s a little disheartening to see someone log a “Found” on my cache and when I check their profile I see they’re in the 1K+ club and don’t own any caches (not picking on anyone in particular, bust something I’ve noticed). I’ve started placing some in the Berlin / Princeton area to make it a draw for others to venture out this way. For me the options are plentiful because I’ve lived in the area all my life and have a firm grasp on where some of the “off the beaten” path areas are.

Work, family, volunteer responsibilities, caching. It’s all a great mix. I do a lot of my caching on the way to work (many FTF’s this way) or during the lunch hour. If I’m not out caching at lunch time, I try to work on the various puzzles sitting in the “Puzzle” pile hoping to move them to the “Solved” Pile. I also utilize different routes home to allow my daily fix of attempting at least 1 as weather / time permit.

I wish, I wish, I wish – could lead to a whole lot of things, but for now I have to settle for the caching when I can. Hopefully in another 25 years caching is still around and I’ll be able to enjoy it more regularly when I’m retired.

OK – I’ll go on record saying “Some things are better left unmentioned.” which is exactly why I’m not going to say anything about the “almost as weird” caching dream I had a few weeks ago.

Why??? Did it deal with Grimace and Ronald Mc Donald and the Hamburgler in a hot tub????

Thanks alot – you said you wouldn’t tell anyone. And now I’ll probably have this nightmare tonight. 😥 😥 😥

Generally none while caching because have been urban so far. When I’m in the woods though I generally take the Leatherman. I always have at least one knife in the car though which is normally handy if needed. Handgun (Ruger .357) is generally kept at home, but would consider carrying it if caching in the northwoods.

Groundspeak became much more liberal about a year ago with regard to name changes. Just drop a note to [email protected] and ask for a name change. I’m pretty sure they will do it for you.

I did this exact thing about 3 months ago and they did it within 24 hours. Great customer service.

    So……. who were you???

Actually CodeJunkie was my new name but our family name was changed to include some uppercase letters to make it easier to read on logs and online. It’s obvious there’sa GUID (Global Unique ID) behind each of these some from a CodeJunkie’s perspective it’s a pretty simple update. Our original family caching name was marksfamily which got changed to MarksFamily.

This concept kind of peaks my interest though. I was thinking of doing a “maze” style multi on my personal land. One of the things I was thinking of doing was adding a trail cam and then posting the pictures to the gallery. I was going to search the cache placement guidelines to see if this was addressed, but know you’ve definately got my interest.

I’ve also done 2 caches recently which had security camera “bubbles” within 10 feet of the cache. I’m sure I showed up on somebody’s tape, but you can’t really avoid it these days. These cameras are everywhere.

Man, I’ll have to check twice before the next time I use a port-a-tree!

My thoughts exactly. I got to wave to some fine folks a few year back during deer season, but that was REAL not MEMOREX.

Typically LCG logs are fun to read when you need some entertainment. Especially gotta run’s logs.

That’s because so many are DNFs that start with “This was the most frustrating cache we have ever looked for…” 👿

As are many of mine from the Laughing Waters series. As a new cacher I had no idea who S|S was, or what his caches were like. There was this neat series of puzzles just up the road in Menasha from my office, so I thought I give it a whirl. How hard could they be honestly? Well call it baptism by fire, I managed to grind my way through, but S|S is probably sick of seeing my name come up on emails saying – “Ok – I’ve looked here, I’ve looked there, there’s a big tree here, there’s a fence over this way, a broken something over here, etc.”

I apologize for offending anyone. Let me go on the record of saying that I don’t give a crap about what anyone does, does not do, finds, does not find, revisits, does not revisit, rescues, does not rescue, replaces, does not replace, DNFs, or does not DNF in this game. I don’t care if someone files a report 100 times or 1,000. I don’t care if someone “breaks” every “rule” in this game. I don’t care 1,000 people play this game. I don’t care if I’m the only one playing this game. I don’t care if I “win.” I don’t care if I “lose.” I simply, truthfully, frankly, honestly, genuinely, don’t care.

I have other things to care about, but this is not one of them.

This is hilarious. I actually went back and read it semi-aloud here in my cube. The mental picture is probably worth a $1M bucks.

I also have other priorities and hopefully my comments are taken as tongue in cheek as well. I also have morals that wouldn’t let me confirm these just to get some easy points. The engineer in me brings about some curiousity and a desire for “exactness” and this coupled with being a programmer? Well – You get the picture….. 😉 😉 😉 (winkies just to be sure it’s not taken the wrong way)
