Awesome – Congratulations. I’ve also been fortunate enough to chase a few of BakRdz caches and they’ve been very enjoyable.
BTW – When we meet up on the trail I’ll buy you a coffee with the $27 you “gave” me at OshVegas this morning.
I’ve contacted Bandits on GC17978, but would also be interested in there other two. I think this would be a great opportunity for our school as a classroom project. They can verify the logs, learn from the earth caches and also learn about geocaching.

GC17975Congratulations to all. This is a very special moment and you should relish in it. I hope everyone is doing well and continues to do so. Three cheers for the family.
September is a great month for a birthday. Don’t let our great puzzlers out there (S|S, cheeto, etc.) see this, but JJBaby914’s birthdate + 10’s digit of my age to be + 1’s digit of my age to be = my birthdate. For those of trying to figure it out ( 14 + 4 + 0 = 18 ).
09/15/2009 at 2:35 am in reply to: Should placing a geocache inside a roundabout be banned? #1914215In my typical management style I must say “It depends”. My vote would generally be “Yes (Ban them)” because all of these that I’ve seen so far don’t have pedestrian access to the center. If there was pedestrian access, then my answer would be a definate “No (Allow)”.
My concern is strictly safety and here it’s not cacher beware because you’re dependent on others. I would rank this similar to placing a cache in the median of a highway. From a DOT (uh-oh here’s that ugly organization we’re going to try and work with) perspective it’s probably “off limits”. In attempt to nudge the DOT I would say it’s probably best not to put them in the roundabout as tempting as it is.
I just can’t keep silent on this one. After reading the entire thing a few thoughts come to mind
1) How many Seldom|Seen caches were included? (Oh that’s right – none).
2) Maybe Geocaching needs a new category called “Driveby”? Then those that aren’t interested could exclude them just like puzzles or multi’s.
3) Being an engineer / programmer makes me wonder if we should devise a new metric. Something similar to the LCG except we should include a logarithmic scale to give more credit for higher star ratings. A S|S cache might be the equivalent of 20 driveups (or more). It is different strokes for different folks. I personally agree with MuddyBottoms that I like a mix. It keeps it interesting, generates some numbers, and gets us off the couch. The problem with signposts is you don’t have to get out of the car (hardly). It’s truly the variety that makes this what it is, but I’m hoping the signposts don’t eat up the great real estate for good quality caches. It’s easy to place a sign post, but it takes real planning and thought to put together some of the great puzzle caches that I’ve experienced (thanks S|S, cheeto, etc.).
My preference is to place / search quality caches. That means going someplace interesting and trying to avoid the drive ups. My 10 year old daughter is also getting into caching, so we cache together as good quality family time. I personally enjoy taking 45 minutes at the Golden Arches to have lunch with her, or playing at a park cache for 30 minutes after finding it.
Congratulations. This is quite an accomplishment.
I’ve seen these as well but haven’t attempted it yet. My assumption was a band saw or table saw, so at least I have some company. For the smaller logs I’ve actually been opting for photocopy and then cutting them on the paper cutter. Works great and photocopies are cheaper. The other option I found is mini journal books at a local dollar store. At 3 / $1 why bother with cutting anything down.
I’m working on it. I’m working on it. This isn’t going to be a good month though. Bow hunting season starts in T-8 days and I’m also involved in a huge implementation project in Sep / Oct at work. Lots of long hours to spent in Neenah. Wait a minute – maybe that means opportunities to log some of these that I can’t do during the day with the muggles around.
I attempted the first one yesterday (one of -cheeto-‘s in the downtown Neenah area) but was acosted (spelling?) by a tatooed street person wanting to know what I was doing. Decided to play dumb and not explain this thing to him and kept moving. Why is it I always attract the weirdo’s??????? Police????? etc??????
My advantage, if you can call it that, is that I’m new and ignorant. Who’s this s|s guy and why does he have so many lonelies? Well, July / August answered this question and now I’m too hooked to give in (give up?). Don’t know that I’ll ever beat gotta run, but will give ’em a “run” for their money.
The DNR has already set the precedent as well. They’ve managed to embrace it by having a form to submit to make them aware. I agree on the drafted letter portion. I’ll be happy to sign my name and send one in.
Congrats -cheeto- (and little cheeto). This is way cool and I’m sure it was special to share with your son. I must say as someone relatively new to the sport, I’ve enjoyed many of the S|S puzzle caches already (about 10% of my total finds – what’s wrong with me). I’ve also completed a couple of yours and am hoping to complete another in the next few days. I must say that I am learning lots from both you and S|S and will be “stealing” a few ideas / concepts for some hides in my hometown.
I think this just means we need to rally the troops. I have a friend that works for the DOT and he’s a casual cacher also. I’ll see if I can get some insight from him on this. Maybe we just need to work with them and ensure the caches are a safe distance from the roadway. Other than that, I can’t see their complaint.
I’ve received an updated copy from the PR department at Groundspeak. If anyone wants a copy please send me a PM with your email address and I’ll forward the email to you. I just checked their website and it’s not posted out there.
The flip side is separate accounts which we’re doing for our kids assuming they’ll continue on their own some day. The challenge with this approach is that sometimes we go in various sized groups and it doubles or triples the logging required. I say use the account as you are and leverage the 80% rule.
09/03/2009 at 12:58 am in reply to: Ever been fingerprinted by police for caching? Oh Lucky me. #1913437This is hilarious (kind of). I had a similar, but not quite as involved on my 11th cache with WeathernowCast. Fox Proposal Point (GCR06T) was the cache we went after for WNC’s #1900. On the way home we got stopped for suspision of arson for the marsh fire just down the road. Look up the cache and read the logs for the whole story.
I’m actually planning to celebrate my by placing a cache at the point of the police stop where we had to explain to our officer what geocaching was.
Glad to hear I’m not the only one.
I’ve submitted an email to Groundspeak asking them to either fix it or give us a waiver. Cross your fingers that they’ll help us out to further the sport.
