I find most roadside p&c caches at 55 to 65 mph, and often from a mile or two away. It’s how I like to clear those pesky icons from my “nearest to” map.
Get with the times, GR, use Google Earth Street View like all the “pros”. You save gas AND the environment 😛
That’s a great idea, and it would be equally as memorable. Thanks for the tip!
And it’s safer than actually getting out into the general traffic pattern. 🙄
No date on the log by the signature and I have a photo of the signature on the log from 2 days prior to the “found it” that just happens to be extremely similar to other signatures on the same day.
I certainly don’t dispute that the people that were there for the FTF didn’t all have one person sign and I’m completely OK with that.
The verification was for the side game of Survivor and I stated the log would not be deleted. I was just trying to verify the side game contestants were playing “fair”. I don’t believe Groundspeak has any stake in the Survivor portion of this though.
I feel 100% justified in deleting a “Found” log that was dated 2 days after the other similar signatures. This would have been completely fine if the finder would have just said – I must have gotten the day wrong. No response to a simple question of “What day did you find it?” to keep the log. I would have even accepted a response of “ALR’s are not required” but they did nothing to help themselves ensure it was them that signed it.

I would probably fail your test.
But I bet you would at least email me back and be honest that you didn’t remember.
And I would never delete a log from the cat as it could have a profound negative impact. 😉

Frog says: “Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game.”
The frog is mistaken. 😀
According to Wiktionary a game is: (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/game)
A pursuit or activity with rules performed either alone or with others, for the purpose of entertainment. In many games, the objective is to win by defeating the other player or players or being the first to reach a specified goal, while in others, role-playing or cooperation is emphasized.

How about I just log, “I drove by, and saw where it probably was.”
I’m suspecting this was the case on some logs on a couple of my caches, but I let them stand even though the signatures were absent.

In caching, the find only counts if there is pen to paper. Seems pretty simple to me.
So if I sign your name and then tell you, you can log it as a find then? That is simple. I better go call my dad in AZ before he leaves today so he can take care of those puzzles I’ve solved out there.
Disclaimer – I’m not pointing the finger at Zuma, but just using his post to make the point that pen to paper is almost meaningless also.
Awesome. This one definately has my interest as I know the guy that conspired to help get it put together as well as some of your interesting hides. And it’s a puzzle to boot.
Great log and it sounds like a great adventure was had by all. Is anyone going to post a copy of that picture here?
I was trying to avoid the specific scenario because I’m kind of curious about verifying finds. I know there was another thread about moving a cache to be devious but that certainly isn’t the point here. The scenario I was curious about was validating the intial finds based on color, container type, postion.
I certainly welcome the comments provided and based on them I think I’m going to avoid verification via these methods in the future. This was just an experiment to test the waters and get some feedback along with some discussion.
I was thinking the same thing Firebirds. Not the fact that things got trashed, but the videos.
I’m an avid hunter and have thought about doing a cache on my private land with a trailcam, but am too cheap to spring for the camera. I’m also a little nervous about the potential liability.

Just to clarify – the cache was found late at might, around ten. The person that you kicked off your game logged the next day and it had the next days date.
Just to clarify – I did not kick anyone out of any game and the log did not have the next day’s date on it. The bogus log I deleted was from 3/27.

Not a big deal but obviously someone wanted to make it a big deal and make her feel bad.
Just to clarify – I emailed the cacher multiple times to try and clarify the situation but my emails went unanswered.

I was along for the FTF. I carried my 2 year old son on my back through that swamp in the dark with a flashlight in my mouth shining on my feet with rubber boots on. I did not sign the log. I let the first person that got there sign my name for me while I stood and watched. I never saw what the container in his hand looked like. I don’t feel bad about it or that I cheated.
Just to clarify – To my knowledge I’ve never questioned your log but am glad you were actually there to visit. It sounded like your group had a great time and that’s what caching is all about.
I never planned for this question to get personal here in the forums and have repeatedly asked the specific cachers in question to contact me directly. Those emails have also gone unaswered, but they brought it to the public forums. In the interest of fairness I’m attempting to set the record straight.
Just to clarify – I’m doing this for NEW hides in the first 2 weeks the hide is out. Vacation, late logging, etc. are not the case here.
It’s obviously too late for this advice, but maybe it will help in the future.
My doctor recommends keeping a few of those alcohol wipes with me when I’m in the woods. The theory is to use these to wipe the hands good before using the wee-wee bush. The alcohol in the wipes is supposed to remove / neutralize the poison ivy oils.
Awesome. Single digits, double digits, now triple digits. Next comes 4 digits and you’ll be there before you realize it.
Congratulations.
I tried adding a couple of caches tonight to opencaching.com Very limited in comparison to gc.com when doing anything advanced. The only HTML tag I could get to work was the hyperlink. For traditionals it might work OK, but for the couple of puzzles I tried to import it failed miserably.

Got two logs from two cachers that said the cache was found but didn’t have a pen to sign log?
How hard can it be to walk back to your car, get a pen, and go back to sign the log.
I would let this go except the same log was written at other local caches too.
Hmmm.. to delete or not to delete.
I’ve had a similar scenario multiple times. I generally email the cacher and explain that I understand that accidents happen. I normally ask if they took a picture of the container they can send me or if they can provide anything specific about the container, hide style, etc. I tell them that I will let this substitute for the physical signature if they contact me within x days.
I get 1 of 2 responses. The 1st is “no response” in which case I delete the log after x days. The 2nd is normally very positive and they can explain something about the cache and I call it close enough.
