I’ll have my first points of the year this month. Logging late, but I was working with the CO to determine if I could claim a find for finding it, but not being able to access the log. The log has become part of a future log (i.e. the container was consumed by the tree)

Hard to pick a favorite. My wife has been collecting authentic German hand blown glass ornaments since her grandmother got her started. Along with this is a collection of handblown glass birds and unique glass icicles.

The tradition of finding additional ornaments each year is what makes it the most special considering it’s carrying on a tradition she started with her grandmother who passed away a number of years ago.

Strange as it sounds, this doesn’t bother me. We all know that there are plenty of people out there that openly share puzzle solves. Just like those that only log with a TFTC, there’s not much you can do to change the behavior. Technically they aren’t breaking any guidelines / rules, so it is what it is. It’s interesting the few people appear to enforce the actual rules (i.e. how many hiders actually verify signatures and delete finds accordingly) but complain when people don’t follow perceived etiquette (i.e. sharing puzzle solves).

I have also been caching with my dad on a few occasions for some great father / son time. In many of these cases, he was “given” the coordinates by me so we could go caching together. I like puzzles and skip many traditionals and he just enjoys finding them and getting out of the house for some exercise. Certainly qualifies as a gray area and a bit different that just giving them to the masses, but …

As a puzzle placer this used to bother me. I’ve come to terms with it and just realize it is what it is. Most of those that share the coords also log a TFTC which shows it’s just about the numbers for them. If they enjoy that, then great for them and why should I hamper them.

As a puzzle finder, I do my own homework to solve the puzzles. I have a number of “tools” in the box that are used on a regular basis to help solve puzzles. I’ve even received coordinates from others in the past, but never logged a find without solving the majority of the puzzle first.

Just my opinion and your opinion may vary.

F2 inside GSAK for the split screen view. No need to write anything down. Gotta love copy / paste. I’m averaging about 6 / minute.

    74 / 164 Solved for “The “G” Men” series.

I was going to remain seated firmly on my hands and not voice an opinion here, but unfortunately I can’t.

I can appreciate the intention of including this in the cache page, but aren’t we really preaching to the choir?

Some of us choose to write detailed, others don’t. A stop sign hide can be quite an adventure at times (I’m speaking from experience). As a CO, I really enjoy reading more than an acronym on my caches just like most other CO’s. As a CO, I’ve taken the wise advice of some other CO’s that have gone before me and just learned to accept it for what it is. I can’t force another cacher to stroke my ego, nor should I expect them to.

I learned a while ago that I can only control my own actions and lead by example. So with that in mind, I do the following:
    1) Publish nearly all new caches as Premium only (it’s seems to help keep the rif-raf away)
    2) Publish nearly only puzzles (it’s what I like)
    3) Write decent logs on the caches I find to tell the story of my adventure.
    4) Include a note in the log stating (photos attached) when including photos. This way the CO knows when they get the email there is more with the online log.

GREAT!! Guess what I just started on…

This series is a little closer than the Indiana GeoArt series though.

Making geo art with the blue ?’s is easy because you don’t actually have to walk the trails. The caches are not actually there.

The more impressive geo arts are the traditional geocaches where you actually have to walk the trails and the caches are actually there on the map.

THAT takes planning and therefore is more impressive to me.

Still VERY impressive because of the time to draft the puzzles also. This could be more time consuming than the traditionals.

in reply to: Your caches after you are no longer with us… #1973309

WOW!!! People writing down and sharing passwords is almost enough to send my heart rate of the scale causing me to cash it all in. As a security team manager responsible for 20,000+ accounts globally, this is obviously something I get lots of exposure to. Note: NEVER, NEVER, NEVER share your password with anyone. In the event of a death, you will be able to gain access to these via the system admin who should be asking for validation. Quiz Time – What is your post important password and the one you must never ever compromise (banking, insurance, medical, etc.)?

Second – When I’m eventually called to meet my maker, it’s not my concern what happens to anything left behind. My heirs (if I have any) can figure that out. Important papers (living will, last will, medical directives, etc.) are already in place designating what to do in the majority of circumstances. I know it sound crass that it’s not my concern, but that’s the truth. I have no control over what happens once I’m in the hereafter and as long as I’ve accounted for the “important” things, that’s what matters. Sorry but I don’t consider my geocaching stuff as part of that list, but I can see that geocaching family will definitely take care of it’s own (i.e. exactly why this isn’t on my “important” list).

I’m running “The Gobbler” with my daughter on t-day morning. Looks like it’s going to be a pretty cold morning. After that it’s lunch at the in-laws. After lunch it will either be butcher time or head to the woods time.

I am just going to briefly hijack this forum as I dont want to start a new one –

Quick questions Can you have different Display Options for different Databases? IE – I have a puzzle database and a DNF Database I do not need the Corrected Coords indicator in the later –

Easily done in GSAK. You can define filters and then select them any time you want. All caches can go in one database and the filters can display them as needed. You could keep them in separate databases also, but that’s extra work.

in reply to: new iphone- what apps for caching? #1973156

Geosphere. The best app I ever purchased. It using the “Live” API to get caches on demand, takes GPX files, allows many filtering / sorting / grouping options. This app rocks and I’d be lost without it.

He’s apparently offered to do the “right” thing which is encouraging. I think it’s important to be realistic and approach it from the high road. That appears to be happening here and nobody is just outright bashing him. Maybe he made a mistake and if he’s willing to fix it, great.

It’s nice to see that everyone didn’t jump on the “negative” bandwagon here in the forums. People seems to be sticking to the facts and acting like mature adults. AWESOME!!!!

What about just searching by the distance attribute?

Distance attributes are fairly “new school” which means they may not be included on many caches (unless the CO was very proactive and updated them).

Here’s an interesting thought though – I wonder if GSAK could be used to generate a list of all caches with Parking Coords and a distance > x from the parking to the posted location? Pretty sure it’s possible, but my GSAK database doesn’t contain all the caches in WI.
