    In the age of “social media” these photos could end up anywhere and no “consent” is required. Making a funny face or other gesture for the camera could be twisted in all kinds of interesting ways that may be blatantly out of context, but good luck trying to stop it (speaking from first hand experience with a photo attack against our church / school by a member).

    I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see this camera go missing. People steal ammo boxes because they have retail value. The most basic trail cam is worth a small stack of ammo cans, so …

    HMMM? That’s interesting.

    Depending on who’s property this is on it may be legal / illegal. The WI DNR has specific requirements for cameras placed on their land including a nameplate visible without touching the camera. In certain municipalities a trail cam is illegal all together. Private property would present a whole different set of options.

    Like an ammo box though, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this going missing considering it’s location is known.

    Do you get to log a bonus smiley each time you update and fix this?

    I certainly thank you for doing this. I use it periodically to see who’s doing what maintenance, DNF’s, etc. (the stuff you can’t get from GC.com’s user profile)

    We should look for the shifty looking fella in the overcoat?

    Flash Mob / Overcoat – So many images flashed through my head as I read this. 🙄 😉

    We still have the requisite technology, but …

    * Perhaps donate them to the local library if they would take them (i.e. I’m thinking tax deduction with this one)
    * Perhaps donate them to a local school. (another tax deduction)
    * Maybe a give-away at a caching event

    Just some thoughts if you didn’t want to use them as SWAG in the traditional sense.

    HMMM? Mine seems to stay in order, but I wonder if it’s because I upload them to GC.com using field notes which adds a full date/time stamp down to the second. I wonder if you enter them directly on gc.com it might only capture the date (not the time?) which could cause all the finds from a certain day to be technically the same.

    I’ll have to look in the raw XML data in the My Finds PQ and see what it actually sends down.

    Do we get to keep our numbers? 😥 😥

    No but you can exchange them at Starbucks plus $7 for a cup of coffee.

    I disagree GR as I know for a fact a cup of coffee at the starry place is $1.94 for 16 oz. (with the $0.10 discount for bringing my own refillable mug). Now if its one of those foo foo type beverages you may be correct. 😉 🙄

    And really, you should get out of the mindset about how others play the game. Seems to be a sticking point of people around here. I guess it’s like this, even if it is about the numbers/points for others, why does it matter? I mean, there IS a point system, right? 🙄

    I couldn’t care less how others play the game. I only made a casual observation that may or may not be correct. I also didn’t refer to any particular person, team or group. In fact my whole comment was based on a couple of lonelies very close to home that have been visited by multiple people over the period of multiple weeks and everyone keeps making the same comments about them needing replacement logs. So I should clarify that my opinion is based on 3 caches within 10 miles of home that have had 10+ visitors. Statistically speaking this may not be a representative sample, so again my casual observation may be incorrect.

    Point system – You’re exactly right. There is a point system to encourage some friendly competition. There have been a number of prolific players this years which is very cool to see. This has cleaned up numerous “dead” caches and confirmed many are still in good shape. This is exactly what the game is designed to do and I commend all those that are participating for doing so. Not only is there points involved, but prizes also which is icing on the cake.

    is maintenance still a part of the LCG or is it just going after the points?

    Based on what I’ve seen lately it’s just about the points for some players. You know – it’s all about the numbers.

    Then there are those of us that look at the lonelies ahead of time to determine why they’re lonely. If it appears the cache is in place but just needs some TLC, I’ll take appropriate supplies to repair it. If it appears missing and I think I can fix it up, I’ll contact the CO and explain the situation. I figure if they want help, they’ll respond. No response tells me they don’t care about it anymore and in that case I may hunt for it, but I don’t repair it and will log a NM log to initiate the archive process. I’m generally not a fan of the community having to continue to maintain something when the CO has gone MIA and left the caches to waste away.

    In non-LCG situations the best the cache can hope for is that I have a baggie and a spare log which I try to carry. I generally cache light (no-backpack) and if the cache isn’t a P&G, I generally don’t take the time to go back to the car for supplies.

    No problem as long as you take it back to Pike lake and start it there…. just kidding, but you must wait until RJ is back on a plane to South Korea so it does not mistakenly make it in his ruck sack.

    4000+ miles in January if you want to make up for lost time…

    I forgot about the virtuals.

    Interesting concept for virtuals though as you must be within 300′ of the coordinates in order to capture the munzee. That would minimize armchair logging.

    Litter. Another red herring. Someone’s munzee goes delinquent, you’re talking about a 2 inch tag somewhere. In contrast, geo-litter is almost always a container of some sort.

    Munzee’s can get disabled / archived automatically though. I believe it’s 2 consecutive DNF’s that gets it disabled and then if the owner doesn’t confirm (or something like that) it gets archived after some amount of time. I may not be exactly right in the process, but I know there is an auto-disable / auto-archive procedure.

    @gotta run wrote:

    Also, as far as I can tell, placements are limited to “traditional” placements (at the posted coordinates).

    There are other types of Munzees also. I believe the most common is “Virtual” but you have to buy these from the site.

    @gotta run wrote:

    In short, I think the munzee folks have some things right. It provides a lot of flexibility, placements are easy, most people already have the technology, and the impact is limited to 2 inch paper tags.

    Tags are approximately 2″ by default, but a savy person could enlarge these if they wanted. The other thing to remember are they placed / hunted via smartphone so the coords are only as good as the smartphone used for both of these.

    I’ve found only a few and generally enjoyed the ones that provide a well defined hint. I’ve had 2 that I searched a 100′ radius trying to find which was extremely frustrating. In the woods with a hint that they were “in a tree”.
