Congratulations Todd. I’m hoping to nab 500 real soon also.

Rocks and pine trees aren’t my favorite hide spots, but only because they generally take longer. I don’t pass them up though without giving a good try. If the ratings are done properly, I expect these types of hides to have higher difficulty ratings. Just part of the game and variety in my opinion.

And sometimes the CO takes it to the next level by using great camo in these same spots (i.e. BakRdz) which really make you scratch your noodle.

Wisconsin has two seasons. 5 Terrian (Summer) and 2 Terrian (Winter)

Winter – 2 Terrain? That’s weird because on 1/1/10 I distinctly remember hiking 3/4 mile through a 1/2 frozen swamp to spend over an hour chopping ice trying to locate a submerged ammo can (wait – that would be difficulty not terrain). 😆 😆 😆 And the terrain would definately be next to impossible in summer – so you’re right.

in reply to: Cell phone PSA #1927393

One thing I’ve done (not hypothetically, but actually) is put my phone inside a plastic “snack size” ziploc bag when crossing water. I carry a few of these bags in my caching kit just for emergencies. They aren’t perfectly waterproof, but cheap and do the job. A cheap ziploc bag can save the phone from the whoops moment. I wouldn’t trust it to keep it submerged, but short dippings seem to fair well. I also carry the ziploc sandwich size bags for things like my wallet, TB’s, etc. They also serve as replacement bags when a cache needs one.

Hypothetically speaking this may have saved one cell phone for a hypothetical canoer (what they may have done before becoming aware of geocaching) when they ran atop a hypotethical log sticking out of the water at a hypothetical 30 degree angle. Hypothetically in high water, this could be a very dangerous situation for many hypothetical situations. Hypothetically, if you can remove your cell phone and hypothetically toss it to dry ground it will hypothetically be ok. Hypothetically this is a good thing, because you could then call your spouse from the next road crossing to come pick you up now that you’re wet and muddy.

What part of the state has salt water toilets?

    Submarines have salt water toilets.

Do cell phones work in submarines? 😆 😆 😆

But I think this may be a solution (hypothetically of course). Insert your cell phone into a submarine and send it across the water. 😆 😆 😆

I had an absolute blast caching this winter. Add a set of snowshoes to the “low tech” bucket of gadgets. I’m starting to see that each season has it’s pro’s / con’s. Snow buries things and leaves hide things.

On a tech side – I just purchased an iTouch for paperless caching and it works pretty well. I haven’t used it for logging caches only because it would take forever to type things up. I do use it to copy down TB numbers, make notes about the cache to be expounded on later, etc. It’s also very handy to have a bunch loaded up to be flexible and just grab one when you’re in an area without having to plan ahead as much.

GSAK is also a great tool for tracking puzzle solves, multi’s, etc. I also cache with my family and many times I’ll pre-flight some caches and then go back weeks or months later with the family and it’s handy to have the waypoints pre-entered.

Low tech gadgets – pen / notepad to write down WP’s while doing multi’s. I do this to prevent transposing / miskeying WP’s into the GPSr. I key them in and then also write them down to check later if needed. Sure beats backtracking to the prior WP if you have questions.

Congratulations. It was great meeting up again at the favorite place on Friday to hear about your intentions. And it sounds like things went off without a hitch. Only 100 more….

Wow – It seems like just a few days ago we were walking the trails and you were talking about this one. We were both going “old” school when we should have gone “new” school. Congrats on another great milestone.

I’ll take Cousin On The Pine Prairie (GC18X7A) if nobody has spoken for it yet.

Awesome. Congratulations. What a beautiful area for a milestone.

With your statement, CJ, it makes me wonder just how many puzzle caches you have found without solving said puzzles.

Todd, reread his post. He DID not go on the tour and only logs his solved. And that what he told the tour leader he was going to do. BUT HE WAS given ALL the info.

Correct CheezeHead – I’ve solved all my own puzzles except for:
    1) SSSS – where it was a group effort with another cacher in full knowledge of the CO
    2) 3-4 that I’ve worked with my daughter on to introduce her to the puzzle aspect of caching.
    3) And the most embarrassing one where I had to ask a co-worker (non-cacher) for help. It was one of Marc’s puzzles and I had spent hours (literally) on it and she solved it in 5 minutes.

Most recently I was even challenged by a CO when I asked for help on a Green Bay puzzle. It’s a multi-step solve and I was trying to confirm my values for A, B, C, etc. I neglected to provide my “work” and was asked for it. I sent a copy of my work and immediately got help. This is exactly how puzzles should work. If someone is stuck and they contact the CO (providing details of what you’ve tried, what your assumptions are, etc.) the CO should help nudge you in the right or wrong direction.

BTW – Todd300 no offense taken from my side – I’m assuming you just misread it.

in reply to: best coord to map page #1926296

http://maps.google.com (provides street level view for a large portion of metro areas). Very helpful for looking for parking, landmarks, etc.

http://www.bing.com/maps/explore (provides birds eye view which will take you to the exact cedar tree and allows for 360 rotation to see it from multiple angles)

Both are fairly quick / good in my opinion. I use both depending on what I’m trying to do.

If you say something often enough, does it become true?

Seldom, as usual, is spouting off facts and concepts for which he has not proof. He makes wild allegations just to support his ideas.

Take what he says, and everyone for that matter, with a grain of salt.

OK – I can’t hold my comment / tongue any longer, but first I’ll say this. I enjoy all varieties of puzzle caches and both Marc, Seldom|Seen, Cheeto, Sagasu, GizFinder and many others in the Fox Valley area have some good, some not so good, some real head scratchers where you have to figure out how the CO was thinking etc. It’s just too bad that we can’t all just respect everyone (thanks TyeDyeSkyGuy for your statement) and move on.

I’m not taking sides, but can provide factual proof of the allegations made by S|S. I’m volunteered for the last Appleton tour with a note to Marc specifically stating that I was only going to log finds for puzzles I found. I supplied Marc a list of GC #’s and Titles of the puzzles I solved and nothing more (to my knowledge). In return I was provided a GSAK file complete with final coordinates for not just the puzzles I had provided, but many others. I’d actually have to dig up the email to get all the exact facts, but that’s the basics. I actually intended to go on the tour as planned, but my wife ended up with a new job and had to work that morning, so I stayed home and played dad which was a blast (but did get to do some solo caching later in the day). The original email has also been provided to at least one board member who I believe was going to address the issue with the board.

There’s the details. Some will call me out as a rat / mole, some a hero, and some maybe just don’t care. My parents raised me to always tell the truth even when it may get me into trouble. So like, TyeDyeSkyGuy, I have big shoulders and if you feel the need to flame me so be it. But at least the truth is now out and hopefully that clears up the confusion.

Me personally – I only log what I solve / find (many of you know this and I can prove), I enjoy getting out with others periodically (but I generally go solo), and I’d like to see everyone just get along.

Now had it been a theoretical trip to the valley so lagrac could fetch all of his solved s|s puzzle caches, and I tagged along to collect the smiley faces while not having a flipping clue how to solve the puzzle on my own, that I think would constitute an issue (or maybe even a tour)!

This is the almost what the hoopla about tours is about. But take it one step farther and pretend that lagrac solved all the puzzles and found them a while ago. Then you and I come to the Fox Valley and lagrac gives us the “tour” by showing (or telling) us where everything is. No puzzle solves required (he gives us a printout with caches and final coordinates ahead of timie), no searching required (he either shows us or tells us where they are), etc. The only real work we have to do is sign the log which is technically the only requirement for logging a cache. In fact it’s totally conceiveable that we could each do 1/2 the caches and sign both our names (or initials) and who would know the difference (besides us of course).

Another sad day in the land seeing all the S|S caches in “Disabled” status. I completely respect your decisions Alex, and sincerely hope to see you get back in the groove here shortly. You have a great following and I’d hate to see a few ruin it for you. Your passion for the ? in this sport is unquestionable and it just isn’t the same without these caches in play.
