I’m confused… I thought you were it and they were you but marc was himself and some how that guy who hid behind a fake moniker and put a should be archived log on all those caches in the state returned hiding behind another fake moniker.

Wow – I’m confused after just reading this one, let alone trying to explain what may / may not or did / did not happen. All I know is that I got pummelled on LCG points (some confirms / some new).

Congratulations. I’ve never seen this cache until now, and it definately seems intriguing. Looks like a great milestone choice.

What: The 2010 Puzzle Bus Tour of the Kingdom of Selzzup

    When: 20 March 2010.

    Where: Appleton area in general.

Why: A big push to clean out lots of puzzles in the area.

    Who: 8-10 intrepid cachers.

Will have a mini bus available that day, so there will be room for up to ten cachers. Several places have already been spoken for, so act now…..

Send me a note by e-mail for a reservation, cache details, etc.

So Marc, how many DNF’s in the Appleton area before you decided to move on with your Puzzle Tour Saturday, curious minds want to know.

And SS, don’t fret too much, I have a feeling your caches will be reappearing soon. 😉

I actually hope they do reappear soon. I have a bunch of puzzle caches on the “Solved” pile that need to be found. It appears winter has been hard on caches because I’ve talked with many CO’s (not just S|S) who have had a number of them disappear. It’s definately frustrating for both us searchers and the CO’s.

I was hoping to go on the tour as well, but I got a unique opportunity to be “Dad” based on my wife having to work. No offense against the tour group, but I had an awesome time with my daughter Saturday morning spending some very precious 1 on 1 time with her.

I use a PC periodically that has this same problem and it’s IE7/8. I think it’s a Active X / Java related issue, but haven’t figured out which yet.

    Congratulations on yet another milestone.

Not to totally ruin your positive moment but…
I found a tick on me this afternoon.

    Let see here:
Craphas => October – March (or 6 Months)
Ticks => March – September (or 6 Months)

I’ll go with the Sloopa outside to make my day at this point. 😆 😆 😆

I assume most of the better units including the legend can leave bread crumb trails? I’ll want to also use this for deep trail hikeing as well.

The ETrex Legend does have breadcrumb trails and they’re pretty good. I’ve used them for trail hiking as well as keeping track of where I’ve walked around GZ (i.e. I think this is the right cedar tree – inside joke but you’ll see what I mean after a few caches). One important thing is to remember to mark your parking spot though. This comes in handy for a variety of reasons including alternate routes back.

To not make this even more complicated – you can actually upload the tracks from the GPSr to the mapping software after the fact. This is helpful for trail mapping (i.e. to your favorite hunting spot, fishing spot, etc.), analyzing how far you went, etc. Lots of stuff I’ve used this for. I’ve also done some “walk-bys” of some urban caches and then analyzed the track log to see how close I actually was. This works good for those times when muggles are in the area and you have to pass on a cache for a return trip later.

I thought that was well stated as well. I didn’t go into the nitty gritty details or even the 10,000 fly over like this, but this is really good. Definately maybe something that could be placed in a more visible location for new cachers.

I remember being just as confused 9 months ago about this very same topic. Of course I’m still a little confused about GSAK, but like any feature rich softward tool, I have a good handle on the 50% of the functionality that I use regularly. The other 50% is good stuff if you need it, want it, etc. But the basics get me by.

OK, I think I got it… I read a cache page @ geocache.com and I believe there is a tab you can hit to download the cache coordinates and notes directly into some GPS units (paperless). Is that the same as “GSAK macro”?

This only downloads the location information. Speaking of course for the ETrex Legend HCx only that I’m using. The legend doesn’t store cache size, difficulty, terrain, hints, description, etc. You’ll need a higher end model, paper, or Ipod like device for this type of stuff.

Also CodeJunkie, I have Mapsoure already installed on my PC from my old Garmin 2610. It was easy to add routes/waypoints to my 2610. I could also use this to add maps to a Legend or my Nuvi 255? I was thinking I needed a unlock code for each GPS unit to use Mapsource with other units at yet another cost from Garmin? Or download a newer version of Mapsource at a cost?

The GPSFileDepot maps are “Free”. Just install them and then you can select the map within Mapsource. You then select the portion(s) of the map you want and download it to the GPSr.

Sorry for all the stupid questions, still trying to get the ins and outs of the workings of GPS units.

There are no stupid questions and feel free to ask any time. You can also PM me anytime if you’d like more specific info.

I use the Etrex Legend HCx with the free topo maps from gpsfiledepot. It does everything I’ve needed it to do at this point and I can’t complain at all. It’s a great value for the money. It’s doesn’t provide all the bells / whistles for paperless caching, but it’s definately a great starter / mid-range model.

How many hoops do you have to jump thru to get the files from gpsfile depot into the Legend HCx? Do you have to use Garmin’s software to load, or can you just copy the file to the card from the PC and load the card into the GPS Receiver and select it from the map menu in the receiver? My Nuvi 255W has a card feature too. Would a topo map load into it the same way? It would be fun to try the Nuvi in off road, pedestrian mode before I buy the Legend.

    Thanks for the help.

I downloaded the 100+MB file, ran the install and then used the Garmin MapSource software to transfer the maps. It’s a one time setup, so not too big of a deal.

Regarding 500 caches in a day, it can probably be done here.

This is the kind of stuff that will be the slow death of this game, IMHO.

This is actually interesting, IMHO. I’ve been in this area and I think the terrain ratings are different out here than in WI. This is out in the Mojave desert and looking at some quick topo maps the terrain is pretty rugged. Maybe a good entrepreneurial venture (i.e. renting atv’s, dune buggies, etc. to cachers or maybe providing the driving services).

But – Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Groundspeak will be change the number of caches in a single pocket query from 500 to 1000. The head frog even promised that this will be in place by May 2nd this year.

    Yep – That’s a hard change for a programmer to switch 500 to 1000. 🙄
(This of course assumes they used good programming practices like defining a global variable – i.e. one change only)
