Oh, the big hockey puck of ice! You were such a rookie then… 😉
“H”ockey puck. This give me a great idea or maybe you’ve just posted a spoiler.

Hey CJ! That wouldn’t happen to be one of those “winter-friendly” caches on the Mascoutin Trail, would it? 😉
OH NO – Not winter friendly vs. winter findable again. 😆 😆
No actually this is my daughters in Riverside Park (Beyond Center Field). You actually warned me about this hide and were right. Water, Ice, what a mess.
I have one that’s froze in place as well. No email yet, but hopefully I’ll be able to get it out sometime this week.

I just happened to do a quick search online and noticed that custom bumper stickers (full color & 3″x10″) can be purchased in bulk for 560 / 1000 or less than $0.60 each. At this size you could have multiple smaller sizes with on larger one.
Just throwing out ideas and leveraging on the bumper sticker idea. I’ve never purchased these, but assume that a bumper sticker would be “weather friendly” and it included full color at no additional charge.
This idea was discussed in the board meeting along with several others.
One thing we learned is that company’s that print stickers will likely not take a job if you are planning to “cut up” the sticker into multiple stickers. They know this by the design you submit. They earn revenue on quantity printed. It is generally frowned upon in that industry to print 2 stickers on one sticker. This is typically why stickers aren’t as cheap as you think they “should be”.
In this economy, I’m quite sure if you approached a printing company with a 2 or 3 up design and explained to them that the 3 parts were meant for an individual cache and therefor necessary, they wouldn’t turn you away. Just design it in such a way that it looks like a concert ticket or hunting liscense that has a number of integral, but separable, parts.
I think the case could be made that a sticker design like that could and would be used for multi caches. Now, if some cachers decide to use them for different caches, that’s their perogative.
I done lots of customer specific labels and the easy way to explain a 2 part on a single label (with a dashed line withOUT “cut here”) is to say it’s going to be folded around the corner so it’s visible from 2 sides.
On a side note – I found another site that gets the price down to around $0.37 for a 3×11 full color. 2×3 would be 0.16 each. All assuming 1000 quantity. I think this is a very doable project at either of these prices.

I’m not going to go into the details because I’m sick of it, but I just want to vent a little steam and say my first attempt to publish a EarthCache will be my last.
Perhaps I’m just an idiot newbie who just started doing EarthCaches and don’t deserve to have an opinion on the matter, but…. if there is going to be a “virtual” cache system related to the earth available, there needs to be an option out there for more than just caches about rocks or holes in the ground. Sometimes there is a great lesson to be shared (such as the human attempt to correct our negative impact on habitats) and hiding a small plastic container on the site completely misses the point.
And that is all I have to say about that.
Ditto. I understand the theory of EarthCaches, but why not accept “Earth Friendly”. I was attempting to work with a group the does Solar, Wind, Hydro, etc. but quickly discovered they weren’t eligible for EarthCaches because they weren’t “Earthy” enough. Considering this was a “Green” group they weren’t a fan of the containers, but like the more virtual learning concept.
Maybe we should push for a “Earth Friendly / Green” cache type. Similar to a virtual, but must focus on being “Green”.

I’m personally grateful for all the help I’ve received from the reviewers. It doesn’t always go the way I want, but the explanations are usually very good and we’ve always been able to resolve the issues. Thanks for all you (the reviewers) do.
And this is interesting because the main page only lists active caches. Like the stock market this value can rise / fall (mostly rise hopefully), but how is anyone going to know which one it is / was?
Only 1200? Huh. That seems rather odd. I thought based on your LCG points for January you had 1300 or so caches then. The numbers are all just so confusing.
It’s been great meeting up with you, swapping stories, following in your tracks, and being “stalked”. I also really enjoy reading your logs.
Congratulations on another huge milestone. (Note: Considering your current pace we’ll be doing a redux of this within a few days I’m sure. 😆 )

Aren’t you already on the road to Eagle River?
Isn’t there a “new” rule that says if you have a number in your GC name that you have to divide your points by that number?
My home turf sure doesn’t have much to offer this cycle. 🙁
May need to start expanding my horizons. 😆
Well it doesn’t say if he was actually an Air Force member or a civilian working for the Air Force. If it’s the former, he should be fearing his commanding officer and not the courts. If it’s the latter, he should be fearing his fellow comrades. What a dope, but of course nobody said most criminals were the best / brightest either.
If you ask him, I’m sure he’ll tell you he was innocent and did absolutely nothing wrong.
I would hope a good DA would argue the point that this was not litter or public property. In in fact does have an owner on the geocaching.com website. To me this is no different than “forgetting” something in the park and having someone swipe your property.
Light the torches and sharpen the pitchforks. 😯 😯 😯

The wildlife refuges (Horicon, Trempealeau, and the Upper Mississippi) are all off limits currently, due to federal policy where these area are designated such that the only public use allowed must be “wildlife centered”. That means that you can kill the animals if you want, but you can’t walk through without “wildlife watching”. They routinely refuse permission for earthcaches, except for those placed by the rangers (much like this event).
The fisheries and other USFWS properties do not have a formal policy as far as I can tell. In those cases, you should talk to the property manager.
I just got an email back from the USFWS and they quoted the following geocaching.com page http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx where it states
Caches may be quickly archived if we see the following (which is not exhaustive):
Caches on land managed by an agency that prohibits geocaches, such as the U.S. National Park Service or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (National Wildlife Refuges).
The interpretation I’m getting from them is that all USFWS properties fall into this classification. But they also stated “… this sounds like a great adventure for all ages.”
I had a blast this cycle and had the opportunity to play in the water and chop ice both on both the first (1/1) and last (2/28) days of the cycle. Definately some great memorable caches thanks to the LCG. And I got the great opportunity to get me dad started in geocaching.

With the month over, the question still remains of who will come out on top of a close race in February. With some cache rescues still unscored that will push some of the top-5 players even higher in the month, the only remaining question is whether any catch-up logging from the weekend remains to be done.
Will it be seldom|seen, playing with the handicap of a perpetual scheduling…ah…”challenge”? Will it be HuffinPuffin2, a team proven willing to go the LONG distance in search of elusive lonelies? Will CodeJunkie solve his way to the podium? Will it be a “jar”-ring upset for jar42? Or will the Old Man finally emerge from a third-shift induced slumber to take the gold medal?
The suspense…the drama…the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat.
Bring on the March list!
I’ll be lucky to make the podium. Bronze is the best I can do.
