Hopefully, getting the word out and promoting the sport to others as a great exercise, weight loss program and just plain fun.
I think I will be signing on to the WGA website a LOT more as I tend to have NOT been very active on the site in the past.
I’m certain other ideas will come up by the board and I look forward to seeing what they are.
You know I would actually have to check but I know that the newer caches I have placed have the “NEW” banner on them. Some of my older caches probably still have the old banner as I didn’t get around to updating them. So I guess the short answer is “YES” the banner is on caches I have placed.
Wow…I could put so much stuff in here as it’s really hard to be humble when you have so much to be humble about.
I think the one geocaching accomplishment that I would like the membership to know about is when you asked me to take over the liaison for Madison Parks and I managed to do away with the requirement and made caching in Madison WAY more convenient.
I served 20 years in the US Navy and retired and have many other stories I could share if anyone cares to hear them.
Soliciting from members at the annual meeting is a good idea or even online but an e-mail request might also work.
My idea for board members to have a local meet and greet to get a feeling of what is going on in the community may also work.
Another possibility…although I’m not advocating this at this time just thinking outside…would be to divide the WGA into North and South or some other division so there is more geographic continuity. I have cached in all 72 counties but many have not and don’t intend to. This North and South division would make it possible for members to attend events closer to home and with the cost of gas and everything else, it would make it more economical.
Strengths…there is a long history in the WGA and the organization has been trying to be more all inclusive with ALL members. Due to the distances, this can be a challenge.
Weaknesses…members HAVE to log on to the webpage to find out what’s going on in the WGA. We had mentioned a newsletter several times but another means would be to have a diverse (geographically) board that each board member could have at least one “meet and greet” event every month or so just to pass on what’s happening to the cachers in that area.
Best wishes to those elected…I’m certain we are in good hands. Thanks to all those who stepped up to give a choice but I feel we have a SUPER board going forward.

It’s a good idea but of course it would take someone some time to put one together either monthly or quarterly. It would be neat if there was an easy way to pull data out about new caches placed and divide it into the various geographical regions. I have to admit that I probably would not be the one to accomplish this task but it is a good idea.

I’m from Madison (I actually grew up in Monona) and have cached in all 72 counties. Meyer’s falls and Bull falls caches in Florence county stick out as you have over a two mile drive into the forest on a firelane before you get close enough to search for the caches. Also there was one that I didn’t get the meaning of the name…ERDQ. I was with GrammyB on our ‘finish the state counties’ tour and I told her that I think the DQ stands for Dairy Queen but I don’t get the ER. She looked at me like I had the IQ equivalent to the lake water temperature in January and just asked one simple question. Where are we? That’s when the light went on as we were in Eagle River.

Back in March of 2006, WKOW TV wanted to do a news piece on Geocaching and I spent three hours taping about a 5 minute story with their news team. I picked out three caches to find (none of which I had found previously and could just see myself getting a DNF on TV) and we went out and taped the adventure. Interestingly, Marble Guy and June Bug who are now 2Crazies MSN, saw it and thought it was a neat game and got started by seeing that news cast. Ironically, several years later, they made the front page of the Wisconsin State Journal in an article about Geocaching.

Everyone sets priorities whether they know it or not. My first priority is my family…then my God and the responsibilities I have with my faith. I believe that being a member of a team requires you to respect the other members as well who are counting on you so any team I belong to that rely on me or my actions are high on my list as well. Friends are VERY important as well but if elected as a BOD, their priority would be right below the board. Finally, you have to take care of yourself.

I hope to be able to attend all events but those that are on Sundays I will be late for as I am the only male member of my church’s ‘Praise Team’ and I do not want to let that team down either.

Education if fine but the thing that I feel is needed is promotion through the print and TV media…especially large events where people could come to just learn about Geocaching.

I have attended two CITO events and just missed one due to traffic. I have no plans for next year but will attend if I can as I enjoy meeting other cachers. Incidentally, I got started Geocaching doing a cleanup of hwy 14 as one of my fellow workers mentioned it to me after the cleanup.
