Sylvania Wilderness near Watersmeet, Mi. Base camp on Clark Lake or paddle to a remote site on a wilderness lake. Lots of remote, wilderness caches placed by upnorthdoc in the area.

in reply to: How Will Rising Gas Prices… #1759106

My last 20 finds have been from a bicycle, but now I’ve exhausted nearly all the nearby caches. The nearest now are at the outer limits of my energies. One thought is to throw the bike on the car, bike to a location and find all of those nearby caches. That’ll work as long as the weather holds, otherwise it is pay for the gas or wait for the price to come down.

My normal preference are caches that are rated 2-3 difficulty. Terrain is not as important. However, with gas prices as they are, I have enjoyed the easier caches that I can bike to. I can get a couple hours of exercise and hunt caches When you pedal 20-30 miles, you tend to plan your route more effeceintly. Burning energy takes on a whole new dimension when it’s your energy that’s being burned.

Ever heard of a “Groover?” Check out a book by river guide Joe Lindsay called “Up !@#$ Creek”. Hilarious mis adventures with groovers ( ammo boxes ) on rafting trips. You can infer from the title what the boxes are used for. Many stories are not for the squemish, but for those with a quirky sense of humor it has some great tales.

Parts of northern Vilas Co. were loaded with ticks. Coming down from “Isolation Ridge,” I had about 12 on each pant leg and boot. Found another 1/2 doz. crawling on me driving back to the cabin and another few once we got back. 2 others ahd similar numbers while the 4th had only 3 on him. all of us wwlaking in single file on a game tail. Must pay to be last in line.

By all means keep it there. I’ll have to admit that I was surprised to learn of your cache when I was planning “Beyond.” Wasn’t even sure it would be approved. However, there certainly is enough space between the two. I would have to agree that it is nice to not have to drive extra to find a couple of caches which are near each other. Also, if one gets vandalized (like the 2nd) waypoint at “Beyond” has, a cacher can still find the other one. By the way, for at least the next couple of weeks, a cacher will have to start at waypoint # 3 for “Beyond.” The coordinates are on the description.
