My wife’s family is planning a reunion down near St. Louis June 22-25, so Father’s Day weekend would be better for me, as well.

However, when the first R.I.G. was on Father’s Day weekend, it seemed to cause some conflicted feelings with some attenders who wished to visit their fathers on that day but were instead busy island-hopping.

For me, anyways, Father’s Day is a minor holiday not requiring the elaborate tributes and time-consuming activities of, say, Mother’s Day. As a father myself, I personally would rather be camping than not.

Any other people AGAINST the June 15-16-17 date, simply BECAUSE it is Father’s Day weekend, and not because of some other scheduling conflict?

Since you mentioned bringing parents along, I’ll keep that in mind with these recommendations. I’ll try to tie it into Geocaching where possible. I like to have people visit the interesting out-of-the-way spots as well as the obvious spots.

There’s three caches by three different lighthouses. Hit ’em all.
    1. I Have seen the light!
    2. Sturgeon Bay Canal Lighthouse
    3. Baileys Harbor Ridges on the “Quiet Side”

The Ellison Bay Bluff County Park is an interesting place to visit. There’s a time-consuming multi-cache there called “Door County Challenge” but the first two legs are relatively easy.

Southern Door has several caches that are interesting places.
    1. Dam, where’s that cache?
    2. Gardner Swamp Thing
    3. Ahnapee Trail Detour
    4. Haines Park

Cave Point County Park has already been mentioned.

“A Pebble for your thoughts?” is at a popular unknown beach in Sister Bay
“Rock of Gibraltar II” is at a little-known beach in Fish Creek

“The Caves of Door Bluff Headlands” in Ellison Bay is another interesting spot.

Sturgeon Bay has a couple of easier caches, “R.R. Bridge” and “Your own private beach”

Other things to do and/or see:
    American Folklore Theatre
    Peninsula Players
    Skyway Outdoor Drive-in theatre
    Uncle Tom’s Newport School Candies
    Ice cream at Wilson’s
Blue Front Cafe in Sturgeon Bay for lunch
Kick Coffee in Sturgeon Bay / Leroy’s Coffee in Ephraim
    Passtime Books in Sister Bay
Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek
Sunset Bar & Grill – Southern Door – Casual dining
    Alexander’s – between Fish Creek/Ephraim – Fine dining

I think that covers everything! Let me know if you have any more questions!

I just got mine for $325 on Amazon. Now I’ve got to sell a few trinkets to cover the cost…

I live in Door County, and know the county inside and out. Seriously. Before I can make some recommendations, though, some more information would be nice.
When are you planning on coming up to visit?
What caches have you done up here already, and don’t need to repeat?
    Are you hiking, biking, kayaking?
    How brave are you?

I must take issue with Cathunter’s statement, though; For a rural county, (Pop. 27,000) there’s quite a few caches. Our problem is that there’s not a large population of local Geocachers, and “vacation cache” placements are strongly discouraged.

I’m not saying it was an entirely bad article, just a little funny, at least from my point of view as a Geocacher. I guess I can’t really say how Muggles viewed the article.

Geocachers trampled our flowers. But look! Learn how to do the same at Old Country Buffet! What happened there, violent rooting through the salad bar?

What I, personally, think is frustrating is that there’s no good way to answer the accusation, “I think Geocachers trashed our park.” How do you answer this?

A denial just sounds fake. Although ALL of the ‘cachers I know personally would never tramble flowers, I do know there are others that don’t give a crap and bulldoze through anything in their way.

(Most of them are from Illinois, of course. Right?) 😆

Thanks to all who contributed opinions. While GPS receivers have added lots of features over the last several years – color screens, maps, etc., – they apparantly haven’t added much in the way of accuracy; Until SiRF chips. Hopefully, prices will come down.

The X models seem pretty much the same, other than the addition of the removable micro-SD card for maps. Any other changes anyone is aware of?

The SiRF seems to offer better satellite locks under cover. Under open skys, it won’t offer additional accuracy if you already have a decent lock with a “regular” GPS.

    Any other impressions?

As far as a schedule of events, I will try to keep everybody updated here, but don’t let yourselves think this is going to be an overscheduled event. Most folks are interested in relaxing, visiting the island’s sites, and partaking of the park’s programs, hikes and tours. I am not going to schedule conflicting Geocaching events when the park staff is offering something.

I have been in contact with the park staff, and the schedule for our weekend’s events isn’t in place yet. So far, I have the following events planned:

    1. some type of timed cache race Saturday early evening, with refinements over last year’s race. This will involve 5-6 finds and you will get all coordinates up front, so if you can’t find one, you can move onto the next one. Points will be awarded based on ability to find caches, as well as time, so you don’t need to be a marathon runner to win. Caches will be somewhat spaced together to avoid excessive walking.

    2. Friday or Saturday night, I will take those interested to the haunted graveyard, where we will hunt ghosts. Those with infrared cameras, bring ’em!

    3. Sunday morning, those interested can gather ’round the last cookfire, where we will listen to “Hymns by Johnny Cash” and have a roundtable discusson. Topics will be a.) “Judas Iscariot: Despised Betrayer or Misguided Idiot?” and/or b.) “When did Jesus become a Republican?”

Sounds like you should come up to Rock Island, conveniently scheduled between Father’s Day weekend and Independance Weekend…

Point Beach in Two Rivers isn’t too far from you, and has a few caches…

Good Question! I will call them and get the ferry schedule directly from them for the entire weekend.

Don’t forget to bookmark this page and check back often, especially those looking for ride shares. I also suggest sharing rides across on the ferry, as you pay $$$ for your vehicle. But also have plan “B” if your expected boat ride partner doesn’t show at the expected time. Cell coverage is spotty at best at the Northport Pier, so we may not be able to call each other from the dock.

I am going to close this thread and start a new thread, due to the number of messages. Thanks!

Both! During the hiding weekend for the WGA campout, I hid about a dozen caches. It involved a lot of walking and waiting for GPS calibration, and, she has, as you might assume, the patience and stamina of a six-year-old child.

I plan on having her at the WGA campout, and if she can behave and not get too much out of sorts, then she can come up to Rock Island. She knows Beth a little, and having other kids there will be a good thing.

I’ve enjoyed many a Wiffle Ball game in my youth on the island, for those of ball-playing age. Not sure if offspring Emily will accompany me, (depends on behavior) but she is 6.
