  • in reply to: DNR Geocaching policy is now in effect ! #1764340

I’m sure we’ll see very few caches being placed on DNR land now. Any time a governmental agency is involved, it’s rarely a good thing, so I seriously doubt that seeking DNR approval will turn out to be good for Geocaching. I wish we had never approached the DNR for a Policy in the first place. If they found a particular cache and had a problem with it, they would just remove it, thereby affecting only one cache. Now with their so called Policy, Many more of our caches are affected. I’m sure what you’ll see is that a number of DNR land managers won’t be aware of the Policy, won’t want caches placed on their lands or will just be ambivalent about it and we’ll get responses from them that won’t seem very consistent. The problem then is, that there is no real recourse or for us as cachers, so we’ll just have to live by what they say, whether or not it’s per the policy. Let’s learn from this and NOT approach any more governmental agencies about policies for placing caches.

in reply to: Reading your cache logs #1763394

I always read the logs and at times go back and re-read them. I’ve used comments/suggestions I’ve received in logs to make future caches better. I re-invented my Mission Impossible cache and used comments made in the previous version to make the current one better. It’s always interesting and rewarding to read how much a cache was enjoyed. All the more reason to try making all caches more worth while!! If you find you’re not reading the logs, then it could be that the cache is not all that interesting, thus you’re not getting logs that are interesting either. Cachers kind of follow the rule… “Unless you can say some Good about the cache, don’t say anything at all” Average run of the mill caches will elicit an “average run of the mill log”. Make sure you put out great caches, and you’ll find you’re reading ALL the logs!!

Don’t know if anyone else does or not, but I have saved most of the stuff I have traded for since I started Caching. Got quite the collection of stuff now. Might be an interesting thing to show at an Event sometime…..

in reply to: Help Out a Fellow Cacher & Cache! #1762961

Glad I was able to help. I know I was disappointed when I tried this one awhile back, and found it was missing. Hopefully others will now be encouraged to go hunt this one.

I fixed the Collectables cache this evening. The Final is now is a new location, maybe 500ft or so from where the original final was. I updated WPT2 to point to the new final location, and verified that WPT1 is still there and in good shape. If you want to pass along the new final location to the owner, let me know and I’ll send you the new Coordinates.

in reply to: Help Out a Fellow Cacher & Cache! #1762957

I did this cache a month or so ago, and the first two wpts were OK. I’ll take this on as a little project and get a new cache box placed near where the original final was. I’ll report back when I’ve completed that…. may be able to get out there yet TODAY, we’ll see.

Congratulations BunnyFuFu……….. hopping on one foot now, but hopping none the less! Guess that blur I saw was you passing me up on the cache count!! Keep Hoppin!!

in reply to: 2 recent 800+ achievers – Digital Dan & djwini #1757986

Thanks Everyone for the Congrats! Increased my total finds by about 12% over last weekend down in Indiana with TQ. TQ you ask…. Who is TQ? Most of you have come to know her as BQ (Bushwhacking Queen)but I’ve come to know her as TQ (Trail Queen) because she preferred to use “trails” where they were available last weekend! 1000 is not so far away now!!

in reply to: Bushwhacking Queen Marches to 3000! #1757993

Congratulations on exceeding 3000! Congratulations on becoming the Number 3 Cacher in Wisconsin, and a Congratulations in advance, for reaching 3100, because that number is really close NOW!!

in reply to: COTM Alternative #1744592

When I first started visiting the WGA site and saw the category of COTM, I thought it would be a NEW cache that came out THAT month. That just seemed logical to me. In fact, it still seems like the logical thing to do. Beyond that, I initially figured, NEW caches nominated would be reviewed by some appointees of the WGA, that would use a defined criteria to select a COTM. Still seems like the logical thing to do….. I’d think with a little effort cache evaluation criteria could be set up, and let’s say (2) individuals from each of the (4) regions of the state could be appointed to actually go out and review caches based on the criteria. These people would then communicate with each other what they found and ultimately select the COTM. That way it would mean something. I also believe that would encourage MORE excellent caches to be placed as well. Having it open to ALL that have ever been placed is too large of a community, which leads to many caches being nominated and only getting one or two votes. This would keep it up to date and relevant as well as give recognition for the effort, and encourage high quality hides to be made. Then, as now, Cache-Of-The-Year (COTY) would come from those choices. Would be nice if COTY could be announced at the Annual WGA picnic with perhaps some kind of plaque or something. I really feel, done in a relevant manner, it would generate more enthusiasm.

in reply to: Garmin Quest GPS opinions? #1761096

It kind of depends on what he wants the unit to do for him. This unit does not have detailed maps of the USA like a Garmin 2620 or 2720 would have. For a $118 more, you can purchase a Refurb’d Garmin 2620 from http://www.refurbdepot.com. You can see the specific one I’m talking about here: http://refurbdepot.com/productdetails2.cfm?Product_ID=4266 If he’s looking for a unit that can navigate him to hard to find cache locations in some of the more remote locations, I don’t think he’ll be very satisfied with that particular unit. Just my opinion. The Garmin 2620 comes with ALL the detailed maps of the US & Canada preloaded so you don’t have to load any specific local maps for an area you may be going to. It will take you coast to coast right out of the box.

in reply to: How cold is it??? #1761042

It’s so cold they had to cancel Fantasy Baseball!

in reply to: Anyone ever do this? #1761024

The funniest one I’ve ever seen was posted on one of the Baseball Moving Caches that came though the Milwaukee area last year. This is the cache posting Cache-Stalkers left.

This was my first and maybe last time I move a cache. Finding the cache was easy. Then I proceeded to leave the tailgate open on the truck, and I lost the cache container on the highway. It takes me 2 days to recover the cache, the container is cracked, and so I buy a new one (an exact match I might add). Then I move it to its new location 90 miles west of my home only to discover I forgot to put the log book back in it!! I realized this when I was half-way home. So here is the deal – to the next person that finds this and continues to move it west, email me your address and I will promptly mail the log book to you so you can continue its journey back home to Utah.

You can see it on cache: GCD4AE

The dedication of this cacher goes way beyond what you would expect!!

Thanks BunnyFuFu, BQ & Ecorangers!! Hopefully I can become a member of the Millennium club by year end! Have been to West Bend several times over the last several months, but still have LOTS to do there! Gotta concentrate on my Multi’s for awhile now, since they are my favorite kind of cache to do!! Thanks again EVERYONE!
