well, my 800 mark doesn’t seem like much after seeing ecorangers with 6600, but it’s a milestone for me.

1 – What did the route on the screen map look like?

purple line did not start where i was. went out to nearest large road, then way north or south, then back near where we were

2 – What did the turn-by-turn instructions say?

pretty much the turn by turn would say go to hwy 1 then turn left or right at the cache, nothing in between

3 – What did the gps claim as your starting point? Was it a hundred miles away, where you last made a Route?

it was never where we were, but i don’t think it was at the last route. can’t be sure though

i’ll try some of these suggestions. i used three different areas for pq’s put the files into mapsource, edited out the ones i didn’t want, put them back into gsak, in a single folder. it would be hard to go thru the whole thing again. i was hoping there was some kind of update button that would go and search the latest from gc.com. maybe that will hapeen someday. clyde makes a lot of nice things happen with gsak

in reply to: Was upgrading your GPS worth it? #1761212

i started with the yellow etrex. down in florida, under the palm trees, i couldn’t keep a lock on the satelites. so i went to a geo breakfast and talked to people about their gps units. decided on the garmin 60c. i love it. i use the maps all the time. needing reading glasses to see small print, i like the color screen and larger screen size. i use a little floating compass that i have pinned onto by caching bag to point me in the right direction at startup. don’t have to hold it, and way cheaper than the 6ocs additional cost. i borrowed a 60cs once and didn’t like the compass feature at all. and now garmin is putting new chips in a bunch of the units to make them read the satelites better.

sorry, no plans to go north, and no time either.

i always thought it was wrong to vote for the one cache that i may have visited, when i have not seen the others that month. it may have been a great cache, but the others might be even better.
early in my caching career, i was looking at the winners to use as a start to planning a caching trip, figuring they would be good caches. i would rather see a rating system and/or comments about the caches to know ahead of time when a cache is a “must do” either because of location or set-up.

thanks, then i guess i can use the city select for both gps’s

in reply to: Newbie FAQ: GPSr bells and whistles #1758847

i started with the yellow e-trex. but within 2 months i upgraded to the garmin 60c. i love my 60c. i did buy the mapsource cd that goes with it to get more than the base maps. i tried going without them, but there were just too many roads that didn’t show up, and i get lost easily. the compass on the 60cs, i found to be pretty useless. i very rarely use a compass, but i do carry one just in case. the legend is ok, but $250 for a new 60c is a great price. but i like the hi-tech toys and at this stage of my life i can spend a little extra for what i want.

i like that idea. i never vote for cache of the month, mostly because i have not done the caches that are nominated. it would be nice to see a listing of what amounts to favorite caches, so when i am in that area, i can go looking for them

my son and i are going to visit my folks in cocoa beach. and we’ll be doing some caching in the area
sure thorson, you can come along, just hafta pay your own way and sleep on the beach, since there’s no more room in the condo. but it’s something like 80 degrees down there so you’ll be fine.

in reply to: Stuff in caches #1761125

i used to go to the dollar store and stock up, but now i have a signature item that i make, a little beaded pin with a logo card. if what i take seems more valuable than what i am leaving, i have some quarters that i add to the bag. most of my caches have been muggled, but i did go and check them and add stuff once in awhile–still all dollar store stuff.

in reply to: Caches along a route #1744549

i’ve never used the point or arc filter. can you give easy instructions on usage?
i have followed the plan of download to gsak, import to mapsource, remove anything not wanted, import back to gsak, and voila–just the caches along the area I chose

nice picture, but could you do a top row/bottom row left to right with names, so those of us who don’t know all of you could attach the name to the face?
    thanks
