I have been using project-gc like dmnrec and that has satisfied most of my needs and does corrected cords automatically from my personal notes. Haven’t been able to truly test out GSAK though due to having a mac as my personal computer and GSAK doesn’t want to authenticate with GC using my work laptop (likely being blocked or something). But either GC.com does it for me with its PQ’s if not I step to project-gc which I do pay for

I think GSAK does not work with macs.  You probably know that, but just a heads up for anyone else looking into it.

I am pretty much an expert in GSAK … that is for about 3% of the program. I love it! And I enjoy learning what else it can do for me. A well spent $25 once upon a time. I especially like being able to merge PQs from several cachers when caching together to target those unfound by the entire group. I also like being able to easily sort by last found date to identify any problematic caches that I can delete before loading….and the list goes on…

Project GC also does the cache found compare among cachers quite slick also…  I’ll use it to peruse a map before going out with others to see which caches no one has found.  Saves a lot of time in planning.  I use GSAK and project GC about equally and think both are well worth the cost.

Thanks!  With that, I have the 1st WI, Alaska , MN, and Finland coins.  I’m glad I didn’t put it in the pirates treasure box 2 years ago  (http://coord.info/GC4TMGP) …  wanted to hang onto it, since I thought it was a neat coin.

Thanks again hack1of2!  I did not know of the refresh data cache data and troubleshooted it when it gave me an expired token error, so now it works and my corrected coordinates showed up (along with favorite points) in the database.  Also, I found out it’s the “geocaching.com note”, not “note” is what I needed to get my personal notes into it as well.

I had already created a bookmark of corrected coordinates (going off my memory, lol), but at least now with GSAK I can not forget which ones I still need to do.

I have seen in the past, cachers putting on GSAK 101 classes as events…. then there were some changes to gc.com policies about having GSAK in the title of the event.  I am setting up 2 classes up in my neck of the woods at the middle school where there is wireless internet and an overhead screen for participants to follow along.  I got another cacher wrangled into helping me that is more familiar with GSAK than I am… also plan to go over project-gc as well.  It won’t be a geocaching event, but an opportunity for cachers to exchange information on what they use the programs for.  And for those cachers that have never used the programs to find out what they are about.

Thanks hack1of2…  using gc.com, I was able to bring up my list of corrected coordinates (more than I thought I had, lol) and I had already done what you suggested for GSAK.

A couple of questions… for gc.com method, is there a way to take those results to create a query so I could transfer it into GSAK as it’s own database?

Using GSAK for it, it seems like I have to go through the database myself and check off which caches have corrected coordinates… that information doesn’t transfer over from my gc.com query directly… is that correct?  Along those same lines, is it possible to transfer over my personal notes for a cache in a gc.com query to GSAK, so they come up on my GPS when I’m out?  I use a 62S.

I’ve tried figuring out how to filter the corrected coordinate caches on GSAK, and have yet to do so…  I also just looked on gc.com to do it, but I’m not seeing “Have corrected coordinates” for a selection…. is this choice suppose to be when you are creating a new query?  Can someone walk me through how to do it with GSAK, or using just gc.com?  (though I’m more familiar with GSAK).

When I did the medallion hunt a couple of years ago at an event, I wrote each clue on a 8×11 paper and taped each one up at the main location of the event when it was time to reveal it… old school, but worked.  Kept people coming back to the main gathering area.

I don’t think I would be able to use GSAK without a premium membership because I wouldn’t be able to do PQs anymore… unless this has changed and you can do PQs without a premium membership.

I ran the dates placed challenge on Project GC last night and it was way easier than GSAK.  I could just select MN, run the filter, and it produced a map of the state showing where all the unfound caches are that I can use for the challenge.   This is a lot more slicker than creating a PQ on GC.com limited to 1000 caches, loading it into GSAK, then running the macro which brings up a list of caches.  Then having to click on each cache to see where it is on a map… but maybe there are some shortcuts to doing this that I don’t know of yet.

Is anyone here also using Project GC?  I did go ahead and pay the annual for that (I think it was $23?).  I have that on my profile page instead of going through all the steps of using GSAK to post my stats.  Project GC updates it automatically daily.  If you don’t pay for it, it will update your stats weekly.  The only negative with it compared to GSAK for me is after 1000, the milestones go by each 1000.  GSAK you can set them to whatever.  But, I do like the county map better on Project GC.  It also does macros, and it seems to be easier to do macros with it than GSAK for a couple that I did.  Again, there is probably a ton more Project GC does that I haven’t even looked at yet… right now, I just use it for my stats.

I’ve been using GSAK for over 2 years and did not know I could print maps like that!  I know there is a lot it does that I haven’t discovered yet… just get into the habit of just using what I was taught on it.  I do like loading queries into it, then being able to re-organize them into what I want, like putting all the 5 terrains first, etc.  I also like filtering the databases and running macros for challenges.  I also like combining queries into a database for when I take trips and loading the whole thing into my gps.  That being said, I’ve never used the pqs on gc.com, so for all I know, maybe the same stuff can be done off the website.

Great!  The county raised its rates to $300/trip this year.  We are going with Captain Mike!  If you check out the cache page, you’ll see people posting for riders for different dates if ours doesn’t work for you.

Maybe we can get some guys interested in this idea if we had an event at this cache:  http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC57FMW_natural-exposure-clothing-optional-cache

    lol

in reply to: Single Geocachers? #2035545

Well I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s interested. Since geocaching is a huge part of my life it only makes sense to start to try to find someone that enjoys it as well. We just need to get some guys over here on the board LOL. Maybe I’ll post something in the general Farms and see if that would drop peoples or attention over here. Do you ladies think anyone would be interested in something like a Geocaching mixer? I thought about having it where one person would get half of the coordinates another person would get the other half, and then when they find the two that go together based on a sheet they get, they could go find the cache together. What do you think?

That is a cool idea…  sounds like an event!

in reply to: Single Geocachers? #2035344

Me too… I tried bringing guys that I meet on-line caching for a date (so I at least get a smiley and don’t totally waste a good hour), but that didn’t work too well, lol.  I’m close to the NW part of the state.

He had other comments on the topic, but that was the main one from his perspective.

That sort of reminds me of something I heard many, many years ago. Always trust someone that cheats at solitaire, because people that cheat other people don’t waste time cheating themselves. 😀

Personally, I don’t care what others do in the game, and I have done P&Gs to fill days, though it’s usually -10 degrees and involved a metal bison tube. To me, that is still a challenge 😆 . I like doing the game the way I want… I don’t worry about numbers, finally hit 1,000 after 10 years. I just cache when I want to and do as many as I want. I am surrounded by unfound caches where I live because I like to explore new areas, not go back to the same park time and time again because some newbie put a new cache there.
