If anyone finds another large ammo box like that, I would be interested in purchasing it. My wife wants to establish a book exchange cache and a large container like that would be ideal.

    in reply to: TICKS #1926716

After having been outside a fair amount recently, I don’t think this will be as bad as the spring we had two years ago. I’ve only found one deer tick so far.

However, before long tick populations will certainly rise. While there are irruption years with huge populations, most springs will have high tick counts (somewhat the way that it seems that every year someone comments about how many dandelions are blooming in mid-May).

BTW, I don’t think saving ticks is worthwhile. There used to be a test to check to see if a tick was infected with Lyme. However, even if the tick was infected, an individual bite would only has a 3% chance of transmitting Lyme. Insurance also tends to not want to pay for the test.

in reply to: new health care legislation #1925729

Here’s a summary I received from the American Academy of Family Physicians

“Sunday night the U.S. House of Representatives took a major step forward in improving health care in this country. We applaud the House for this historic vote and thank you for all your help over the last year to get us to this moment.
The bill addresses many of family medicine’s long-held priorities. It will guarantee coverage and expand access to health care for 32 million more Americans. It will help shift us toward a health care delivery system based on primary care. It will advance the principles of the patient-centered medical home. It will eliminate many of the worst practices of the health insurance industry, like dropping patients when they get sick and denying coverage because of pre-existing conditions. And it includes a significant investment in the education and training of new family physicians.
We would have liked to see this bill go further on medical malpractice reform and provide a permanent solution for Medicare payments to doctors, and we’ll continue to work with the rest of the medical community and Congress for improvements in these and other areas of importance to family physicians. “

Welcome! My son is a Webelo scout now and hopefully will be moving up to Boy Scouting next year. While I live within the Northern Star Council region, I hope to visit some of the camps within your region.

My state representative Anne Hraychuck serves on both the Transportation and Natural Resource committees. I have expressed my views to her about this issue – including the fact that the DNR encourages this activity while the Transportation discourages it. I think she was also surprised to find how many caches were already in her district. She is likely to support any measures to allow caching at rest stops (if it ever gets past the bureaucrats.

Zuma, Thanks for reviving this issue!
