in reply to: Tick Removal #1906582

When I first moved up to Grantsburg, I had heard all sorts of techniques to remove ticks. Most of them work find for wood ticks but poorly for deer ticks. I have never had any success with the chemical or soap techniques. I do have personal experience with the Ticked Off product mentioned by TE. It works reasonably well if the tick is not extremely imbedded (some of which have to get cut out!).

The Tape technique mentioned by TE also works well. I have collected ticks like this (my personal best is 61 on one day). After the ticks are stuck on one side, I have sometimes attached them on paper to better analyze them. I call it my “Ticker Tape”. Since the ticks have very slow metabolisms and tend to wake up only after being exposed to Carbon Dioxide, they stay alive attached to the tape for a long time. For weeks after, you can see them come to life and start wriggling their legs simply by breathing on them. I have even noticed that it you take an engorged tick, they may even lay eggs underneath the tape!

Remember the best prevention is to avoid being bitten in the first place. The best repellents have permethrin in them and should be applied directly only to clothes (not your skin).

I’m glad I swung through here on my way home from Madison (it was only on the way to other geocachers!). It was a great event! While the weather forecast seemed somewhat ominous, it turned into a great day and the spot offered some phenomenal hikes and finds. Nicely done! I’ll have to make sure to get up here for the next event (if my schedule permits!).

    Congrats!

in reply to: Rabies shots sure sting!!!! #1905883

I just heard that the shortage of rabies immune globulin and vaccine had lifted and that adequate supplies were around.

The new rabies shots hurt far less than the old ones. The old ones were extremely high in potassium and really irritated the nerves around them.

    Congrats on achieving 4 digits!

deer ticks = bear ticks (Ixoides subscapularis)
wood ticks = dog ticks (Dermatocenter mirabilis).

Wood/dog ticks do not transmit Lyme disease (there is no ‘S in the name).

Here – but I rarely read the off-topic forums.

I was checking here to see if there was a WGA NCAA basketball tournament challenge but there doesn’t seem to be one this year. 😮

If you’re looking for a quick fix, consider going to the chiropractor once or twice. The suggestions above are also helpful (although I rarely prescribe the kick to the shins! lol ).

Longer term, physical therapy is probably your best best to preventing this from being a chronic problem. Also consider antiinflammatories and possibly muscle relaxants.

    Best of Luck!

    Congratulations!

However, in Roman Numerals, 900 is represented as CM (M=1000, C=100).

You keep scheduling events on weekends I am gone!

I have to be in Madison for a faculty development meeting on 4/24. However, I might be able to back in the northwoods for this event. It sounds like fun! Combining mountain biking and caching would be great!

I will be taking my family on a cruise in the western Caribbean leaving one week from today! I hope to get a few caches in Key West, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and the one earthcache available in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It seems like the caches in these locations are hit regularly by cruising cachers.

I have seen Drhaas’ vehicle and I know it has a plate along these veins. However, I think theirs is: GEOCACHE
