But, they give me gifts every time when I am in the woods enjoying their great music!
I’ve gotten gifts from the birds too … but in my case I had to use the sink and wall-mounted dryer at McDonalds.
Great comments … keep them coming … you all are great at helping me thing this through!
My feelings at the moment:
1. I liked the thought of getting both, and thus getting the cheaper VistaHCX rather than the 60Cx. The only “problem” is that I’m guessing the functions and buttons on the Vista work like the lesser eTrex models … is that correct? I really, really like the way functions work and the buttons are layed out on my old eMap and my mappless GPS76 … not sure I want to give up the layouts/functions I’m use to … in which case the more expensive 60Cx would feel more like a “comfortable old friend” to me. Is my thinking right on this … regarding the functions / buttons?
2. I also was concerned with a dash-mount (such as the nuvi 200w) being tempting to break-in. I live in a more rural area, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have crime.
3. Most times when we travel away from our “known area”, it’s as a family … so there’s typically an extra set of hands that can look at a handhelds screen. It works well when my wife drives and I “navigate” with GPSr; but when we switch roles/seats, she’s not as comfortable with the GPSr.
Just to clarify … my idea of a “dash-mount” is a true “car only” unit such as the nuvi 200w … I’m not interested in taking a mobile GPSr and putting it into a mount. To me the reason I’m interested in the car only unit, is to have the larger screen and touch screen functions … the difference in operation, not the fact that it sits on my dashboard.
Are birds mailing you boxes of candy and pictures of their nests?

You didn’t say what maps you have for your eMap, but you could probably load those maps to the VistaHCX.
I have MapSource 6.11 current (which I see I could update to 6.13 with the free download). It’s a bit old … but if that would work with the VistaHCX, I like your thinking so far. Especially, who cares if the MapSource is a bit dated on some roads, since 99% of the driving would be the responsiblity of the nuvi.
This sounds great so far … but keep the ideas coming.
Does anybody know for sure if MapSource 6.11 will work with a VistaHCX? I believe the “data” is “MetroGuide USA 3.0”.While I hear GSAK is a great tool, and I’m sure it is … I’ve never figured out why I need it either.
This is what I do:
1. Get a PQ file from geocaching.com, in the GPX format.
2. Delete all the old caches off my Palm and GPSr.
3. Open the file in my Garmin MapSource software, load caches to my Garmin GPSr.
4. Open the same GPX file in my copy of CacheMates “converter” software on my PC, convert it to the CacheMate file for my Palm.
5. Sync the Palm to bring in the CacheMate file.I do have an old Garmin (an eMap) and running MapSource 6.11 map software … some day when I upgrade to newer equipment and map software, is that when this suddenly gets more involved?
I would guess that getting 10 – 20 hours on LI batteries is pretty good!
I’ve always found I get shorter run time on rechargables.
In my case more like 8 to 12 hours. Also, have these LI batteries ever been exposed to high temperatures … such as sitting in a car in summer? … if so, you’ve set them on the road to early retirement, they just don’t like being heated up.
How are things today?
I just created/ran a query … by the time I closed geocaching.com and opened my email account the query was there, no problem.
Based on what has been said/try so far this is a mystery.
One more thing you might try … use the “alternate email address” field and really DO use an alternate email address (rather than your normal one) … have it email to a friend or setup another email address to send it to. The ideal test subject, would be someone else that currently gets the files sent just fine from their own geocaching.com account.
If it gets to that email address, then the most logic problem is some sort of “spam block” issue as others have stated; but if it still doesn’t come to that person, then maybe your geocaching.com account is stuck in some way.
However, one thing that doesn’t help … is the 5 attempts per day “rule” … if you already “tried” that many times today, don’t bother trying this test today … as they failed attempts likely count just as much as a successful one would.
About 10 years ago I spent 3 months not allowed to put any weight on my left, due to a crushed knee joint … I used a wheelchair a bit, besides crutches. Thinking back to those days, if geocaching had been around then, it would be tough to imagine doing many caches either … I think you’d have to be looking mainly at park bench caches along sidewalks and stuff like that, with some rare exceptions.
I guess that’s why I originally pointed out that other site … I can see it being a handy “tool” for those with limited mobility, because of the 5-digit code system to “get picky” on the conditions.
I suggested checking out this site, that discusses this:
http://www.handicaching.com/To my understanding a TERRAIN of 1 SHOULD BE Wheel Chair accessible … if the owner did it right … anything short of that should be at least a 1.5.
The DIFFICULTY rating should not have anything to do with this, as that typically reflects the “trickyness” of the cache, not how hard it is to get to the spot. A puzzle cache could be very difficult to figure out, but still be something you could wheel up to. Our a cache could be along a sidewalk, 2 feet up on a metal post, but maybe there are 26 metal posts at ground zero. A real life example could be a military tank, with a magnetic within reach from a chair along a side walk … but just what spot.
12/05/2007 at 3:24 pm in reply to: Protecting Geocaching Within the State of Wisconsin????????? #1881715To me … the best way to PROTECT is to PROMOTE … the better that the public understand what we’re doing, the less likely they are to be bothered by it.
Here’s a new outlook on this … not that I care enough in either direction to bother, but I’m feeling creative today … setup TWO geonames … one for regular finds, another for event/temp finds … such as: EnergySaver and EnergySaverTEMPS ???
Who could complain about that? You have the opportunity to clearly identifiy finds that are temps … and still log them.
… and try getting the snow blower started in that cold!
There was that time I wasn’t paying attention and back off the shoulder of a gravel fire lane after doing a cache … oh never mind, that was Wife Swamping.
Note: Never make your wife get out and do the pushing, no matter how bad your migraine is.
My 2 cents …
(A) Play the came the way you want, this doesn’t effect the rest of us in any way.
(B) HOWEVER, if you consider a Milestone an “important event”, to me it would lose importance of you “tweak” the order of logging your finds. What’s the point of getting excited about a Milestone, IF in reality it didn’t really happen at the place you claim it did.
