This is not just an issue with private land … some DNR land has hunting too, as is other land such as some county land.

For example, “Lions Den Park” (county park, Ozaukee County) is closed to the general public right now for a special limited hunt.

Harrington Beach State park (north-east Ozaukee County) has Muzzleloader hunting right now, then bow hunting … I planned on shutting down my caches in those area, but the park ranger encouraged me to keep them out but with specific “rules” … in fact there’s actual a big sign at the park along the trail when you reached “the zone” with similar alerts … see what I have posted at this listing: GC13FWY

    Good points …

I bet there are very few cachers that have gotten the majority of the West Bend caches, it is very cache rich there. Give us something else to do or eat , maybe a few new pre-release caches … we’ll come.

Regarding the comments of others about temp hides … I have to agree they don’t attract me either like they use to, EXCEPT if they are something real interesting that a regular cache can’t handle (ie. blinking lights or something that jumps out at ya, etc.) for the novelty factor.

Disclaimer: I still think temp hides in general work well for “training” new cachers at Caching 101 events, as you can put them close together to a “caching experience” with less time/distance/travel.

    My 2 cents …

Temp Caches: since West Bend has a lot of interesting character and a variety of features, how about some temp hides that are real unique (stuff that wouldn’t work for a regular hide), but still outside so they have the “feel” of traditional caches, but with some zip and surprise.

Strong socializing opportunities: a “base” location where you can hang out and chat if you want, but also make the temp hides in large clusters so you don’t have to drive much/often, but instead can walk with others doing caches as you go.

Food: food is always good, but if you have a common “lunch time” try to pick a location where we wouldn’t be packed in like sardines (I suspect this would be the biggest challenge).

… we look forward to what you come up with … have fun doing it.

If your giving away cash for cache … I’m not proud … I’d be happy to suggestion 3 or 4 of my caches, including one that is high security for the folding money. ๐Ÿ˜•

“unofficially” I’ve had good work experience with Affordable Heating out of Cudahy … they service the Milwaukee area for sure … you didn’t hear this from me.

Regarding LED Spot or Flood Lights … try this source, but keep in mind the prices are still pretty high, since the technology is fairly new:

Regarding Changing to CFLs when your lights burn out … Why wait for your bulbs to burn out? … Sounds like your trying to not “waste” the last 20 cents of “value” in your old incandescent bulb; yet your missing on the energy savings in the mean time, which can be up to $12 per year … on larger bulbs, but typically at least $5 per year. Don’t wait … a CFL can pay for itself in a few months(assuming you send in for the rebate) … after that you’re money ahead. Since I work for the state’s energy conservation program … I guess I better speak up …

    Check out this website: http://www.focusonenergy.com/
Click on [Where you live] for residential stuff.

The biggest “no brainer” economically … is to replace your regular (incandescent) light bulbs with CFLs … you can get them for almost nothing these days, after the rebate you can get of $2 per bulb.
Here’s the form for the rebate: http://www.focusonenergy.com/data/common/dmsFiles/R_EP_FORM_2dollarMailInCouponCFLsv2.pdf

Question: How do I setup a cache for adoption?

Answer: Just put the cache out there and then abandon it ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Harrington: Risen to Power ( GC13FWY ) … I’m not sure there’s anything like it, at least not in a Wisc. State Park. It’s not hard, just different.

Note, that you need to find 2 other caches to find and “access” the cache … they are nearby and noted on the above cache’s page.

CAUTION: This cache will not be available during deer hunting season, as it’s in an area open to hunting (Muzzleloader Season รขโ‚ฌยฆ likely 11/17/07 to 12/2/07).

in reply to: Timeline to Log FTFs? #1880673

I personally think trying to be FTF is very much a luck and/or hit-or-miss thing at best … I don’t think someone should be disappointed if they’re not FTF ….

    (1) As we’ve already stated, not everyone logs or logs quickly.

    (2) I’ve read log entries where people find out they missed FTF by 10 minutes, heck I’ve ready logs where #1, #2 and #3 all ended up in the parking lot at the same time … and this is even in my area, where the population is not very dense.

… you take your chances when you go after FTF, that’s life … or that’s the geo equivilent of life.

in reply to: Timeline to Log FTFs? #1880664

Keep something in mind … there are many people out there that NEVER log their finds.

I’ve noticed as geocaching has become more “common news” in society, that people are trying it and never bothering to log finds.

In the last 2 weeks alone … I’ve run into 3 people … the guy that fixes my car, the gal that cuts my hair and someone at a store that regonized me from an article in the paper two years ago ๐Ÿ˜ฏ … all 3 have been caching for 6 months to a year and have never logged a find online.

They just don’t see the point of it … they just cache to have fun and don’t want to spend the time going back online. I tried to convince them otherwise … since I “live” to read people’s log entries.

I’m going to not vote … because I’m 50/50 on this.

I agree with the concerns about what counts and what doesn’t for most finds, etc. … I’d rather not see us go there (any more). Right now that issue has fire but no fuel, a plastic statue or pressed wood plaque would burn too well on that fire.

HOWEVER, I think it would be a great idea IF none of it was about how many finds you have. Go with the best cache of the year, or funniest log entry, etc, etc, etc … make the awards about singular accomplishments and I’m all for it … especially if what the awards are and the voting on them, is done after the award-able year is over (thus eliminating direct competition). It should be all about fun and an official gathering to see it happen.

If you do proceed with replacing the heating system and are considering going with a high-efficiency system … consider applying for an incentive to get some money back toward the cost of that system, from the State’s Energy Efficiency program:
