I came upon a cache in Sheboygan two years ago, that had:
– a fortune cookie
– a pack of fire crackers
– a paint scraper with a razor blade in it
– a pack of matchesIt was an odd situation … as we were there with another family, so we had 8 people total … and 2 of us found the cache at the exact same time, except we were about 50 feet apart! There were two ammo cans, hidden under different spots. Near as I can figure one cache went missing, the owner re-hid a new ammo can, but then original container was there, just in the wrong spot (maybe found by some kids a rehid 50′ away).
One thing I don’t get … when a FINDER finds beer in a cache, it’s great that they’re telling you it’s there, but why is the FINDER not pulling it out. If I find a cache and it has food or a knife or something sharp in it … I pull those items out … why delay, it shouldn’t be in there, it’s the duty of any cacher to yank it out.
I say pass … if anyone really likes what I say that much, email me and I will tell you where you can hide a Snickers Bar for me.
It seems to work at some moments and not at others … so I assume they’re still “tweaking” it. It seems to “lock up” every so often … you still see the stuff on the screen, but can’t click on any thing.
In general I think it is (or will be) cool … I like that you can choose what shows (skip found caches, pick cache types, etc.) … but I do wish they had left the numbers on the cache blips, along with the matching numbered list on the side showing the cache names. I found it sometimes handy to print off one of those maps for field reference (I just was quick if you were already checking it out, rather than using my GPSr software). I’m guessing that the old method was so much slower at refreshing because of it needing to track the numbers/names when you moved around on the screen.
Monikers are over rated … but I do like bananas.
7 months since I pointed out this problem … and they’ve still not fixed it.
Hee, hee … just was going in to delete my “Will Attend” … and now the problem is gone. And sure enough … I had registered my “Will Attend” on 9/6, so it must have went away this past weekend.
I suppose, the programmer in me says that it would be kinda tough for the system to pay attention to the event date or if you “Attended”, but making some code that expires in 30 days, would be pretty do-able.
Ok … originally I had a “Will Attend”, then I added an “Attended” … two separate entries … which seems to be the logic way to do it, and what I believe others do. So I guess maybe I’ll DELETE my “Will Attend” entry … it’s a little thing, but it bothers me to see that up there, makes it look like I have a caching waiting to be approved, at first glance.
I’m too “swamped” at the moment for full instructions on the actual HTML code part … but the starting steps, which you might as well already do:
(1) In the Cache Edit page, check the check box to allow HTML, that needs to be “on”.
(2) Upload the picture to the caches page, or the picture needs to be uploaded somewhere else (ie. another website). This will not work if the picture is simply on your OWN computer, it needs to be on the world wide web (either geocaching.com or some other website).
(3) They involved part of adding the HTML code to your caches page … I hope to get back to you later, or someone else will … but in the mean time do steps 1 and 2.
Welcome … were in Ozaukee too … maybe we could join forces sometime.
Since your new and in the area, you should consider attending this event … it’s this Saturday, it’s for new people and it’s just north of you (Sheboygan County) … I’ll be there with the gang …

I just bought THREE of the Western 500gb for backing up data at our office … they’re great!
You will likely find it for less elsewhere, but this is the unit we went with:

Something to be aware of … some drives come format to only handle file sizes up to 4gb … which for many people is fine … but if your doing a large data backup using a backup utility that puts on the files in one file, you may start a backup and then hit that limit. However, the solution is simple … just reformat the drive (right click, format), it will then be set to handle unlimited file sizes … it’s just a pain to start a backup and then get a message and have to start over. FYI, formating a big drive like that takes a couple hours. I’ve found in the past that some brands of drives are already setup (like Maxtor 160gb), but some (like the Western 500gb) are not … not sure why, but not that big of an issue.
PC Frog … that’s for filling my “memory gap” … I recall now that I stumbled on that Advance Mode for the person … 2 years time had totally wiped that out of my head.
Yes, as it would appear from looking at the steps … it is not a fun process with this unit. The guy I was helping two years ago, got the unit as a gift … I took him caching one day and he got hooked … he sold the thing at a rummage sale and bought a Garmin 🙄
Here’s a link to the online manual … so far I see it cautioning that if you set a new Home Waypoint, you erase the prior one. I’m starting to wonder if that’s how the person I helped a couple years ago used the unit then, just one waypoint (cache) at a time?

I helped someone once that got one of those puppies … I remember it being very “hidden away”. The unit seems to be designed under the assumpton that NORMALLY you’d care about only 2 waypoints! … your HOME waypoint and a MAN OVER BOARD waypoint … anything beyound that becomes a bit less user friendly.
I’m going to look through an online manual now, to see if I can find/remember the steps to take to add more.
yes, there is a limit on far the system will allow you to move … I experience this too, but can’t remember the distance that I attempted … I’m guessing but I bet the move must be less than 0.10 mile.
