Found my first WHERIGO today … West Bend, WI in Regner Park … I loved it … wish there were more in the area. Pharmgirl did an excellent job on it too … including how exact the final coordinates were (I literally got my GPSr down to about 3 feet, looked up and there it was).

Took me a bit of time to get it all figured out … but my problems were with my GPSr (not being patient when I’d press a button to wait for the results to be calculated I guess). I thought it was locked up a couple times, causing me a couple false starts. When a person is just caching, clicking the buttons on an Oregon 400t is pretty quick … but some of the steps on a WHERIGO seem to cause a pause of 5 or 10 seconds, but they came prodictable after a while .. I think the unit has to think pretty hard because of the complexity happening behind the scenes.

My biggest suggestion … After solving a view steps (maybe when walking to the next), exit and then SAVE the game … then come back in to your saved game. If you lockup or power down by mistake (I did the later while crawling under a tree) you lose what you’ve done so far (retracing your steps takes away the joy a bit). So save, save, save.

GC24NAZ … ruins of very old mining piers, under water but very clear to see from land.

I have many other caches in the same park, the others are not sited at ruins, but you walk past many ruins of the old mining town that use to be here.

I’d go with the camp that says: better off keeping water out, than trying to dry it up from the inside. Condensation from within is much less of an issue that water getting in … the silica will not hold up to water getting in, don’t waste your time.

I think in general … there are a lot of things that are “bad news” in a cache … things I’d rather not find or have in my caches that I’ve come across: dog treats, fortune cookies, toothpaste, etc. While others, like the aersonals, we’re finding are just plain dangerous.

So it’s just best to educate each other as best as we can.

I’m now thing about batteries … I think we’ve all come across or put AA batteries in caches … never thought much about that before, but deal with a battery that is leaking could be a bad experience too. Just last night we had a high-end calculator at home where a battery went “major bad”, the whole calculator is slimed with the battery gunk, dripping from the keys and all … I ended up pitching the whole thing, no way to clean it up.

I’m thinking of moving to some other climate … one where the temperature is always room temperature and overcast skies.

I’m actually thinking of using both … I’d rather not have exploding condums in my caches either.

    Ok … Revised example: GC13FWY

    Revised code to use:

    CAUTION:
Do NOT put spray cans (like bug spray) in tightly sealed containers (like ammo
    boxes) -

    Read Why
    .

ohhhh great … that means I’ll need to redo the code for each cache I put this on … because a new picture will get a new image page assigned to it on the GC website.

I can sort of see what your saying, but not totally … I mean my mind doesn’t go there. For what it’s worth that was from an existing “no aeresol” symbol on a t-shirt … so I’m guess most of you won’t be buying that t-shirt.

Hang tight … revision coming in the near future.

Based on the “duely noted” and that the warnings didn’t include a link directly to the discussion … I’m guessing they’re just replying to the posting/note on the cache page and have not read (or could not find) the article on WI-geoacaching.

So likely they see this as “concern” rather than something that actually went bad. I would have given a “duely noted” too, unless I read that one actually exploded.

Does this mean that the “difficult” ones should be NOT family-friendly … so like 4’s and 5’s in the bad part of town :-O

Ashen15 … what kind of computer do you have? The GPS receiver I gave does NOT allow you to go paperless, that is true, because it just loads the coordinates not the text. But you say you can’t connect it … you should be able to, using the cable I gave you with it. Before you shell out a lot of money for a GPS receiver to allows you to load the text, I would recommend that you make sure you can load caches into the older GPS receiver without text, as the connect of connecting a GPS receiver and a computer are the same basically.

To me the extremes get my attention … if it says “1” well then it might be a good choice for someone in a wheel chair (or some dork recovering from a broken knee cap), so to me it’s real important to get the “1” caches right … then the extreme of “5” to me means “ya better read this before you go out to try it” … everything in between is somewhat relative and sort of just fills the gap in the numbering scheme.

    Wow! That’s horrible.

Thanks for the tip on the safest way to open, that was the first question to come to mind.

I guess that’s one advantage of “weak” plastic-ware.
