It’s one thing to have 500 “finds” … but much more impressive to have 10 “finds that are not there”.

I’m going to assume that it’s the same as for our “guest” GPSr, which is a GPS72 (minus the Map).

I think your problem is that your assuming that like some other Garmin models you can delete the waypoints in mass from the [Goto] button’s screen(s). This is NOT the case, with the 72.

From a “normal” screen, press [Menu], then [Menu] again … then scroll down to “Points” (short for Waypoints), and hit [enter] … then select “Waypoints” and hit [enter]. Now lets stop for a second … I bet your thinking that your at the exact same screen you’d have been if you had started out with the [Goto] button … but your not … your at a more advanced version screen. So now from this screen (which should be showing all your waypoints), press the [Menu] key … you should now see the choices of deleting a single waypoint, or all waypoints, or waypoints of a specific symbol type.

I too “live for” the logs of others at my caches … that’s why I hid them to hear about how others enjoy them. But at the same time I can see how it gets tough to make the logs individual when you have lot of finds in one day/weekend.

However, I’m still “happy” if someone gives me a generic “play by play” of their weekend, and maybe throws in a word or two on at least a couple of my caches. Here’s a great recent example of what “works for me” (custom portion bolded):

6:23pm, From 6:59am, to 8:32pm, 21 caches & 2 DNF’s today. Today had its ups and downs. I started in Port Washington, went up to Belguim, and back down to Port Washington. Then I went down into gullies and creek beds, and up to churches and bluffs. Concluesion? There are very few easy caches in Port Washington. TFTC.

    Cool!
    No $$$$ required.
Just make a promise to come to my neck of the woods sometime at find my 5 new caches (Zip Code 53004, all starting with the word “Harrington”) … as I’m sad that more people have not searched them out yet 😥 … the mystery one is my new favorite of my caches 8)

Also … I don’t think you’d find that “trick” in the manual … I believe it to be undocumented. There are other “tricks” to, but most of them are for testing the screen and buttons after the unit was produced.

If it’s the eMap you spoke of on the “For Sale” forum, there’s no way you’ll get any repair at a price less than buying one on eBay.

Make sure your read my “suggested fix attempt” on your “For Sale” forum entry … http://wi-geocaching.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=5961

They seem to be on ebay.
I too have an eMap that I’ve used prior to even knowing what geocaching is … I love that old eMap … I feel the pain of your loss.

Does it power-up and seem to have all the screens functional … just no satelite data coming at it?

TRY THIS before throwing it out … attempt a factory reset, but be aware that you will lose an data (waypoints, routes, etc.) you have stored …

    (1) Start with the Power OFF
    (2) HOLD DOWN the [Esc] Key while Powering ON the unit
    (3) You will see a warning screen
    (4) Set the unit outside with clear view of the sky for about 15 minutes

… see if this fixes your problem … then send me $5 in the mail if it works (just kidding).

Opps … my mistake … you said “from” not “in”

When I saw the title … I was going to suggest The Beast.

THANKS FOR YOUR FEEDBACK … Some Comments Back …

    (1) It’s true that I “let the cat of the bag” by stating it was under St Mary’s steps … however, they would not have that knowledge since they were using an old sheet.

    (2) I had missed that they found where it should have been and I did allow for that (due to problems with containers) … but they never emailed me the location (but now I’ve revealed that location).

    (3) I feel I can give them the benefit of the doubt that they truly did complete the whole puzzle and ended up in the right place (some how) … even though they shouldn’t have been caching from such an ancient piece of paper.

MY DECISION … It’s not that big of a deal … the puzzle is very time consuming, completing the puzzle steps is 95% of the “work”, 5% is finding the spot/cache … I’m going to leave their “find” stand as is.

in reply to: Magnetic Key holder #1876223

most of the newer/cheaper ones … I’d never trust them to hold a key under a car (assuming you find some metal under your car) … the only thing I can think of (other than the things being no good at all), is that they assume you stick it there and maybe pull it off once or twice in your life time, vs. being pulled off more often for a cache.

With all email notifications, we also have to worry about messages from the WGA server getting lost in people’s spam filters. This is already happening to some of the forum notifications (where you watch a topic), and the more email we send and the more people we send it to, the more likely that the stuff we send will get flagged as spam.

I think the idea of emailing notifications or a regular newsletter is great! Especially the newsletter idea. While spam filters can and are an issue, I don’t think that would be a reason to not send emails, it’s up to each user to teach their filter to let the emails through … at the very least, the WGA can say they have a notification / newsletter in place, beyond that each user needs to address limitations on their end of things.

in reply to: Magnetic Key holder #1876220

My experience is that any key holder with a GLUED in magnet is prone to problems on occassion. The reliable ones are the good ol’ fashioned magnets with a metal bracket that’s rivited to the keyholder.

Once a found a pack of 5 keyholders … I stuck them on metal, the first time I pulled them off 3 of the 5 left their magnets on the metal surface. I glued them back in with silicon caulk (the bathtub stuff works well).

Also, just consider buying a strong magnet and glue it on the small container of your choice, using silicon caulk. I’ve had good luck glueing magnets onto the side of film canisters … just be very generous with the caulk … make sure it’s 100% silicon caulk, NOT latex.

I’ve only seen the jeeps from the first year … not run into any since, even if a cache listing claims there is one in there.
