My 2 cents … this is the sort of discussion that will never really come to any results. Here’s the real problem … GC.Com is “wishy washy” on this, PERIOD …

    #1
By not giving you a way to log temporary caches, they’re sending the message: Do Not Count Temp Caches.

    #2
I couple years back when they eliminated the “Found” choice on Event Caches and replaced it with “Attended”, they sent the message: Stop Counting Events as Caches Found.

    #3
When the powers that be at GC.Com, when asked, say they don’t care which you do, they send the message: We are not commenting on our reasons for #1 and #2 above.

… The whole problem is not having a solid answer from GC.Com verbally/written that either agrees with their actions on the website (ie. No Temp Logs), or explains away the reason for the website changes. Until the day one or the other happens, it’s all an endless discussion.

    Checkers!
Checkers would be perfect … as you go through all that work, winning all those playing pieces, but you only get to count it as winning ONE game.

Someone mentioned emailing them and asking more about them … at that point, unless you uncheck your “reveal email” check box you HAVE given them your email address.

You could be right … but could also not be 😆
You’d only know by working with the specific device, in my confused opinion.

I have experience with devices that plug in via USB that contain storage but can NOT be accessed with anything except specific software. I’m not speaking from the GPS receiver world, but experience with $9000 in fared imaging cameras, the ones I have worked with only allow downloading of the stored images via the included software … they can not be made to show up as a drive giving you directly drag/drop access to the images.

❓ Why are you calling it the Fall WGA picnic when all the dates except for one are considered “summer” and not “fall?”

The campout is/was during the school year, it would be nice if this one was held in the “summer.” Tami

Good point … since this is a family activity, it would be nice to avoid “school season”.

I voted for 8/25, but my only “real suggestion” is to NOT have it 8/18 … I’m not available then, but I’m aware of about 4 or 5 new caching families we got started over the past year that would love to come, but are not available 8/18 for the same reason I’m not. So you’ve got like 5 “Not 8/18” votes that you can’t see 😯 !

Could be they won’t load the thumbnail image when the server load is heavier? Just a guess.

Maybe you got something there … I would think that letting all those thumbnails load would really bog things down … cause even if you don’t scroll down the screen to view all the display pictures, they still get downloaded. Actually, if the do offer this feature … I wish there’d be a way of turn it off … I live out in the sticks (no access to cable or DSL), so I’d not be happy get all that extra stuff loading on my 26.6 dial up.

    Regarding the upgrades …

I do NOT see the pictures as “showing” with log entries, they’re a link that you click on, then the picture “fades” the cache page to almost black and shows the photo in the middle. Very cool, but not what others are speaking of.

How does the “Add A Friend” thing work? Does it create like a handy list of people you email via the GC system on a regular basis, or ?????

in reply to: Poll: How do you use hints? #1874526

I think it’s funny how the comments are more about how/if you print the cache page, rather than what you do with the hints … not that it bothers me, just think it’s interesting.

To prove it doesn’t bother me: My GPSrs and Palm always have the 300 closest caches that I’ve not found (more for variety/options, since we only find 3 or 4 per outting), but I do typically “research” caches on the website before leaving the house, mainly because the stupid pocketquery page still does not work when you try to eliminate caches marked “no dogs”.

Now the original survey question: I decode “as needed” on my PDA if we spend more than about 5 minutes looking for the cache. Sometimes if we take visitors with us, I might decode right away in hopes that I can figure out where the cache is without really looking, then have a good laugh watching our visitors try to find it.

I see there’s a window cleaning services in the Milwaukee area, that advertises on their trucks that they are “GPS Dispatched”.

If they can do it, why can’t a tow truck … but of course, window cleaning is much more of an emergency situation. Or, maybe it’s for those that just want a specific window cleaned.

in reply to: When is a hint not a hint? (Mini rant) #1874071

I agree with all that has been said … especially the comment just made about not blaming the finder, especially the “occasional cacher”. I think it’s one thing when the prior finders seem to comment that a cache is a difficult to find or maybe even missing … but I think human instinct (especially with newbies or occasionalies) is to think “I’m not trying hard enough” and get more aggressive in the seeking. So we need to either reconsider the hiding spot, or give a good way out if someone is having troubles. It’s one thing when you want to have a tough puzzler that is suppose to be tricky (in which case it should also not be in a sensitive “tear up zone”), but most caches out there are not suppose to be that tough to find.

No sign of the poor snake yet … but it must have been a small one of these: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/caer/ce/eek/critter/reptile/redbellysnake.htm

in reply to: Yellow Jeep TB Without its Tag #1873490

If you’ve ever activated your own TBs, did you happen to keep the “Copy” tags that come with TBs (or at least use to come with them).

If you have one of those “Copy” tags in hand, I’d suggest spray painting the tag, then writing the TB code on it with a permanent marker.

I use my copy tags this way on occasion to mark coordinates for the next leg of a multi (rather than a container with a slip of paper) … they seem to hold up well. I’ve had one hanging in mid-air for well over a year now without any fading issues.
