UPDATE …
I’m hoping this problem will be fixed … from the GroundSpeak forums others have noticed this too, but have fallen on deaf ears …. http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=158402&st=0&gopid=2779172&#entry2779172
However, I sent in a “trouble ticket” that has not been ignored … I got a reply requesting some examples, so it appears they are checking into it now.
Try this …
#1
Make sure your running version 7.0.2 (2/23/2007) of GSAK, they modified it recently to work with Vista, prior versions had some problems.#2
In your GSAK, find the “GPS Setup” screen … make sure the right Brand is checked (ie. Garmin vs. Magellan) … but more importantly make sure the check-box is checked indicating that you are using USB (I assuming you are using USB, which is a good bet with a new laptop).Follow-up to my last posting …
I synced both our Palms … everything stayed they way it should (ie. time didn’t change, the change to the DST scheme didn’t change, schedule Calendar appointments didn’t change).
To the best of my experience, I don’t think the PC-side of the Palm sync process “cares” about what time it is. I see no place to deal with Time Zones or Time of Day on the PC-side.
Commenting on the comments of others …
Yes, I also changed the “end of DST” settings also … I changed them to: First Week / November / Sunday … I just forgot to mention that. So in theory I should be “set for life”, or at least the life of the Palm.
Good point, not sure what will happen when I sync the Palm … I should try that. I hope the settings don’t jump back. That could be the only reason I see to use the software “fix” (since I’ve made the change manually already) … maybe the Palm software on the desktop computer also gets “fixed” by the “fix”. I will try that tonight and report back.
I’m under the impression that the main purpose of this cable is to transfer data and software from an older computer to a newer computer … they seem to be an option that you can purchase with the new Windows Vista computers. So I’m not sure the main advantage of day-to-day use for a geocacher … but then again I’m not sure of this, I could be wrong.
At any rate, I see they now sell the cables at Walmart … I saw them by the computer systems.
I almost didn’t notice this new “Off Topic” thing … you really should have put something in the “Announcements” section about it. 😛
not 100% sure either what your getting at … but the “detective” in me wants to take a guess …
I see you rate your cache as a 2.5 / 2.5 … but yet the 2/6/07 finder indicates “they drove right up to it” … so are you trying to tell them they drove their car where the shouldn’t have? I that’s what this is about … I’d just leave it, the damage is done and maybe they couldn’t tell where parking ended and trail/grass started, due to snow cover.
Did I get it right? Do I win anything?
Yup, correct.
Actually … if you look at the history of versions … they didn’t start out with the first Pocket PC version of CacheMate until AFTER the last update to the Palm version. It’s not like they’re releasing Pocket PC versions more often because it’s becoming better or more current than the Palm version … it appears they’re having a lot of bugs to work out on the Pocket PC versions due to the different platform to support.
I can help you out on this, about 1/3 of our caching happens in Sheboygan and nearby Sheboygan Falls … we tend to stick with the more scenic / woodsy caches, here’s our picks …
GCXTVZ … an easy cache, but a cool place to stroll around (can be moist).
GCY195 … a very funny mystery cache (but read logs of others for hints)
GCR2D9 … make sure you walk the tunnel under I-43 after finding this one.
GCV8V8 … speaking of tunnels, this ones on the other side of it, so do it right after the prior one.
GCG0HJ … if your up for challenging terrain (big time), give this one a try.
GCXYMR … a fun multi.
I happened to have a couple extra hours in at work during the week, so I took off at 3pm on Friday … we hit some caches in Sheboygan Falls. I knew the storm was coming, but we had the itch … so I’m glad we scratched it on Friday 🙂
Spent the rest of the weekend reading a great sci-fi thriller … Monster by Frank Peretti. Highly recommend the book … once you get about half way through it involves GPS receivers big time. I’m tempted to plant some geocaches that follow the storyline and “topographical flow” of the book … hmmmmmmm 🙄
thanks for explaining that … being that I’m a tea-totaler, I too was feeling a bit confused.
I think the product you pointed out would be a good choice. Not sure if the “bag” is pliable enough to allow good “button pressing” with it inside, but you certainly could try. A possible compromise to try … purchase the product you indicated, but keep it in there only when your NOT taking pictures, BUT also have the camera inside of a regular zip lock bag … this way your attempting to take pictures through a thinner zip lock bag (less protection, but more function), then return it to the special bag when done (for max. protection).
Having said this … just how valuable is your camera? Have you considered having a “cheaper” camera for such situations? You still could “bag” the cheaper camera, but cut your losses if it sinks to the bottom of the lake. If your interested, I’ve got a Casio Exilim EX-S2 sitting around that I’ve pondered selling on occasion … it’s real thin (3/8″) and works real well in a zip-bag … I’d part with it for $40 plus shipping cost, it has an extra battery too.
Not a specific summer cache … but the summer in general: we changed our “geo-mood” and have pretty much gotten in the habit of only caching when we bring others along (sometimes first timers and sometimes not) … this has created so many great memories of strolling down wooded trails, enjoying the scenery and each others company … and oh yes, the caches.
I hope this one counts … it wasn’t in summer but a sunny day in the mid-30’s about a month ago … warm enough to un-zip the coat once we got walking (remember those days?): We took our church’s new pastor and his wife geocaching for the first time and also their first time in the northern Kettle Moraine (they moved here from CA in October to become our pastor, he was a National Park Law Enforcement Ranger in his past career) … so they of course loved the Kettles and we had great laughs caching the day away … we were doing “Pretty (Muddy) Back There”, with Pastor Kevin running ahead with the GPSr, he decided it would be quicker to go off trail, he got almost out of site of us, running ahead being silly, when he took a head first dive off a bit of a drop in elevation along a deer run … Rev. Kev was fine and so was the GPSr … he was just hoping we wouldn’t see what he did. I of course have never stopped teasing him about it. He’s a big guy, 6’6″, and it was funny to see him disapearing into the brush. I’m wondering why you had to “download” drivers?
I’ve purchased 3 such units (1 at home, 2 at work) … in a 3 cases the unit came with a driver CD … all 3 times it worked right out of the box, using the CD that came with it.
This is the most recent unit we purchase … a whole $14 and it worked great … nothing to download … I quote: “The onboard, proprietary circuitry under the DB9 hood guarantees 100% compatability with all serial RS-232 devices. Installation is easy.” … http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=767105

there is a few geocachers that will go visit a cache and not post it on the web or sign the log that they found it.
but not me it is all about the Numbers for meGood point … actually this is happen a lot (at least in my area) … I’ve recently replaced a couple full log sheets. I’d say about 1/4 the entries on the paper logs sheets were never logged on the GC website.
In fact, in one case I got word that one of my log sheets was full and I was confused because the cache was somewhat new and didn’t seem to have enough “finds” on GC to be full … but sure enough, it was filled up with legit geo-names that never logged on the GC site.
