  • We use them mainly just at geo-events.

We haul enough stuff in the woods without bring them along to every cache (it would be different if we didn’t have cell phones).

However, we typically have them in our car, so if we attempt a really “back woods” cache, we take them along besides a couple other extra things (such as a short rope to use as a portable hand rail for the kids).

    I have a question:

The DNR has the right to remove the cache, if the owner does not submit the notification form. The DNR may remove it, or they may let it be, especially if it’s not causing any problems.

I think I’m going to contact the DNR about hosting a special geo-event … brat fry, looking for temps, and sale of 200 ammo boxes complete with trinkets, TBs and half filled log books !!!!!!!!

Thanks for providing this update and official word.

A questions on a slightly different path … what about an EVENT held in a State Park … I assume that one would submit the form then too, even though it’s obvious that they already know your there?

C’mon…I feel sure that you could find a few places to hide stuff! There’s always the guy who sells fruit instead of the one who sells veggies. And what about having a person holding a pole with a cache on the end of it instead of in the sign. C’mon Ron…you can do it!

😆 Thanks for making me laugh (I’m sorry for making me LOL) … if you were here right now I’d throw a film canister at you (one with a magnet on it so it would stick). I know I could force myself, but my hearts not in it, since I gave it my all last year (regarding finding spots I liked) … why do it if it’s not fun. 😉

Regarding GCHN4Z … I assume there should be no problem giving it over to Team Venom … as the caches indicates, I’ve been baby sitting it for about 2 years now and I’m very willing to turn over those chores to the close-by Team Venom. Not only has the cache owner abandoned both of his caches, but he’s not even keeping his personal website current 😆 … which might be a good thing, since he’s got links to all his personal banking and credit card suppliers right on the site 😯

I thought I was the only one having troubles … last night we went for a cache that gives parking coordinates along the edge of a fairly busy road … we couldn’t find the parking spot!

The coordinates just don’t seem like I’d want to park there. We drove by a couple times … then park there and decided as a family that we were not getting out of the car, it just wasn’t the spot described on the cache text. We were about to pull away, then the sheriff squad stops in the opposite direction. Great luck! … it’s our daughter’s teacher’s husband … hi Mr. M! He was just wondering if we had car trouble … we said no we just were a bit lost, but figured it out now … off we drove.

And imagine the royalty fees to MapQuest for using their trademarked maps and little red star!

    My 2 cents …

    (a) It’s for sure Ok to do at a cache that “advertises” to be a Travel Bug Hotel … I have a couple of those and assumed that they would get multiple visits by the same person.

    (b) In the case of other caches, I guess it’s more of a gray line, but personally I feel it’s still ok. Typically the goals of a TB involve keeping them moving, and that’s exactly what the person grabbing them is doing, even if it’s a repeat visit. TBs are different than caches, so grabbing a TB is a bit different than visiting a cache, the cache is just the grab point. Now playing “hog” and grabbing all the TBs out of an area on the globe, that’s not very nice … but if you see a specific TB and feel you can keep it moving, I say go for it.

In the picture on the right … just what is that red “GPS receiver” … it kinda looks like a PDA that you would get with a Happy Meal.

I doubt they’ll reuse digits …. after all “closed” events or old caches never really disappear … you can still get to their pages, if you go about it the right way.

    Great Job!

I wish you did this sooner … I prepare similar information in an email for Vince at Fox6 a few weeks back … then Monday a co-worker surprised me by getting into geocaching over the weekend, so he decided to go paperless … unfortunately both Vince and I deleted the email I prepared … so back to the drawing board.

Oh well, at least I know where to send people in the future.

Never mind … I found the “cheat codes” to turn off WAAS on a Magellan (with Garmins they give you a screen to do it).

The codes can be found at: http://www.gpsoz.com.au/waasoff.htm

Be proceed with caution, other sites list the same codes but indicate it’s possible to lock up your unit if you do it wrong … mainly be straying to some other hidden menu than “03”, so make sure your on “03” choice.

in reply to: Your first "stupid question" … #1763973

Keep ’em coming … this is fun.

Ken: I know it was extremely stupid of me, especially since I’m pretty good with techy stuff, plus I’m reminded of it every time I use the good ‘ol eMap.

Jeff: I had a little trouble with the first ammo box too, not that I couldn’t get it open, but it kinda hurts when you do it wrong.
