Will event check-in be able to handle the ROUND Garmin connector?

Our guest/kids GPSr is the Garmin 72 (I think) and it has the round connector, rather than the flat/slide-on Garmin connector that eMap and eTrex uses. Just would like to know, the cable would be one less thing to drag into the park.

No, this one is not that hard to find. Your thinking of a different f-trup cache of a similar name, “Club LL3 Playround” about a mile away … now that’s a tough one.

She found one of f-trup’s caches … http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=77a3f223-fdd2-47de-bcf0-d8bac1500e3c

Being that it’s a multi, finding more coordinates and reference to “the club” (which means the area deer), it threw her a bit. But the doors of communication are opening, and I’m pointing her to Garmin, so all is well.

I thought I was the only one that did this.
In case your real cheap (ie. want to save $8), it’s possible to load just the trial (non-activated) version of cachemate on the 2nd palm and just “beam” the categories of caches from the registered copy to the non-registered. Since you’ll likely never need to use them … you could always pay the $8 if it ever “saves the day”. Not that I recommend doing this … but with gas prices, I’m not sure how cheaping your feeling right now. 🙂

I’m in Port Washington and it sounds like it might be one of my caches … I will contact you via emai.

Even some of the somewhat newer Palms do this … for example the Zire 31 which has rechargable batteries, warns that you should really plugged it in every night (ya sure) to avoid the risk of running your batteries down (which happens even when the unit is turned off, just slower) and loosing everything. They have eliminated this issue with newer units, such as my Tungsten E2, which claims it can old the information without battery charge, but I still charge them a couple times a week.

If you mean in general (ie. not while in geo-mode) … I always have one or two small zip lock bags, to clean up after our dog.

I should add one more comment on your idea … part of the problem is this:

It’s a “static” (unchanging) PICTURE from a map … so if you are zoomed in far enough to read the name of the cache and the names of the streets, you will likely be zoomed in too far to get enough reference points from surrounding streets.

The advantage of Street Atlas software (or equivilent) on a Palm, or for that matter a mapping GPS receiver, is that when you zoom out the text (cache name or street names) re-size to still be readable. But again if you zoom out on a JPG image on a Palm the letters get tiny and blurry.

The size limitation on a Palm (or other PDA) screen makes it not possible to see a large area of a map and still read text. Mapping software on the otherhand is designed to deal with this.

I played around with this once (actually on my Palm Tungsten E2, but the Zire 31 should be the same concept). You need to convert the image file (you say bitmap) to a JPG image file. Then open up your Palm sync-ing software on your desktop computer and drag the JPG file(s) into the software. Now sync your Palm … wait for the big files to sync over. Then use the Palm’s Photo Viewing software to view the JPG files.

I only did this a couple times, as I found it much work and somewhat slow (due to the size of the JPG files to sync). It would almost be easier to just print off the maps (sorry). Keep in mind the JPGs are fairly large you will only fit so many in your Palm, unless you have a memory card too.

The solution I went with is purchasing Street Atlas USA for my Palm (http://www.delorme.com/) … with that software you can put in any coordinates and it shows you a map of that area … you could even have it plot a route to that location for you. It will not show the cache symbol on it, but you have active maps that you can zoom in and out of. You could even buy the “Earthmate” package that includes a GPS receiver module that plugs into your Palm and the Street Atlas USA software.

That’s what I was just going to suggest … those USB/Serial adapters work great. I have 2 serial GPSrs plugged in (one in the serial port and one with an adapter), plus a USB camera, plus two Palms (one usb, one special cable that adapts to usb) … all work fine.

TS showed me the inner works on the box last year … it’s not about being easier, but about the wiring connections needed. Quality eggplants make use of all the signal connections, like Garmin’s do, while Magellan’s are missing a couple connections, so it was easier to put it last on some of the broken contacts on the army surplus switch he bought.

I would like to thank TS for making the device, which he did for the Secret of Stonehaven event last April. It works great, except for the egg plant interface.

It’s good to see that the DNR continues to work toward making geocaching part of the “every day world” of possibilites on their land. If we’re sharing success/gratitude stories, I’m still glad to see that the state park in my area is still listing “geocaching” as one of the activities in the park, along with fishing, hiking, biking, skiing, etc … including a link to the caches that are in the park … http://www.harringtonbeach.org/

I remember that a little over a year ago, there were none left within about 25 miles of me to find (of course I’m on the big lake’s edge so that rules out one direction). But now …

301 to find within 25 miles
3173 to find within 100 miles

    3376 TOTAL within 100 miles
