    to “hogrod” ….

The unit your looking at should work fine for loading cache pages, with software such as “Cache Mate”.

But one issue to consider … if you bought an older Black/White unit off ebay or something, you will have better ability to see the screen while outside in the sun … I’m betting that the color screen on the unit your considering will be difficult to see in the sun. I bought a Zire 31 and it was difficult in the sun.

Another option .. the one I went with … is to go with a higher end unit, such as the Tungsten E2, which uses a “transreflective” screen technology, that does much better in sunny conditions (not perfect, but better).

So basically … buy cheaper, buy higher, or get a hat with a large brim.

A possibly interesting side note (or maybe not) … this past April I hosted an event with Tami of EcoRangers (I like to cap the R), so prior to that a lot of emails were flying back and forth and a lot of event discussions at my family’s including “EcoRangers said this, EcoRangers said that” stuff … since “EnergySaver” and “EcoRangers” are slightly similar, we found ourselves confusing the too … during that time we caught ourselves twice almost signing logbooks as “EcoRangers”!

Bought 3 …. 1 as an unactivated “keepsake”, the other 2 have been activated and will be dropped in caches (hopeful thinking I guess).

I’ve thought about keeping one of the activated ones with me and “logging miles” at caches we visit … but with my slow internet connection, it’s just too much of hassel to even think about it.

    Mine came too!
Yes, very well packed and labeled.

I’m pleasantly surprised at the quality of the coins! They are very thick and deeply engraved. I anticipated something much more flimsy for the reasonable price.

Belgium is right next to Port Washington!!!!

I work for an energy conservation company … we assist commercial/industrial customers through the State’s energy conservation program (Focus on Energy) and utility-sponsored programs. “EnergySaver” is just what came to mind the day I needed to pick a name … I didn’t know at the time how much we were going to get into this, or I might have thought of some cute/cool name instead.

Hey Robin … do you think our politness is making anyone sick yet? I must add that not only are still more right than me, but I think your spelling is “eggcellent” and you make good use of “punucutation”. Does anyone notice that I use quote “marks” too much?

in reply to: Available during Winter? #1760035

My opinion, if you’re using the “Winter” symbol in general (especially with no further info about winter status in the description):

    1. Good to to 12″ of snow
    2. Ice for the most part will not freeze the thing to not being accessable or openable (is that a word).
    3. And that without too much threat to life, that you should be able to make it from car to the container.

I don’t agree that one needs to guarantee a snowplowed parking lot nearby, nor providing a path that won’t fill your boots with snow or slush. I think one needs to deal with those little issues while caching in Wisconsin.

With my own caches … I *THINK* they all have disclaimers about specific snow/ice conditions … like “not good when ice on ground”, or “good to about 6″ of snow” or “good in all winter conditions” … for me that’s an added responsiblity as a cache owner, to make these things clear so that people are never disappointed due to weather.

Now MUD … that’s different … it’s not my fault that “Johnny Cache” pulled both of his stocking feet out of his shoes in the mud last month at “Hawthorne’s Evil Monkey”! (He-He)

    I stand corrected … I was a bit harsh.
His caches have been lacking care in the past (I’ve had a friend replace his container 3 times now), plus he hasn’t responded to emails ever. But he might check in on occassion … and have difficulty getting to caches, if he’s no longer based locally. I suspect it’s more of a matter that he doesn’t check the email account where messages go to him.

At either rate, it’s under control now, thanks to the approvers … I will remind them to reactivate when I take care of mine.

Thanks for keeping me in line … some one has to.

    Good discussion!
    My opinions …

I too like bigger containers out in the woods. But also agree the many urban caches or local park caches work better with micros. Also, I’m concerned with people freaking if they find a dangerous looking ammo can … so I’m trying to use them in only real remote areas, or where I can strongely emphasis that “all is well” (example: at Harrington Beach I have an ammo can in a somewhat traveled area, but it has the Ranger’s name and Ranger office phone number all over it) … But I think large containers can be clear tupperware, for example, and keep the panic level very low if found by mistake. I also think there could be more “small” caches where many “micros” are showing up … at least have room for a couple trickets for the kids.

in reply to: No Place like H.O.M.E. #1741722

Yes, it’s a cool and educational place.

Basically designed to teach students, contractors, etc. about how to adapt a home to work well for both people with and without special physical needs … plus it’s also semi-self-supporting as a B&B, with I believe very resonable rates. H.O.M.E. stands for “House of Modification Example”.

I got to tour the facility a couple years back when our company was helping them apply for grant funding for solar equipment.

Some pretty cool stuff to check out on their website too: http://www.hnet.net/~welcomehome/
