Congrats!
Thanks for making #5000 on our daughter’s new cache (“Star Light Star Bright”, GCQEF8). She will be glad to hear that.Nice log entry …. I’m still laughing. How can you have not killed yourself getting to the spot where we hid the final AND THEN manage to back you car into the ditch at the parking lot! Too funny! (Folks – this is a real parking lot, with gravel and edging!)

Regarding Dogs at the event …
Should be no problem. This event is not really being held in a park. It’s along the city streets, marina, beach and woods of the city of Port Washington, WI. People walk their dogs around here all the time (including the beach area). Of the 18 hides for the event there would be only 3 exceptions … 2 are inside local businesses (so just have the dog outside) and one might make your dog nervous because of the surroundings (again someone could hold the dog nearby for a few minutes). Also none of the caches are dependent on the rest (no multi or mystery caches), so you could choose to skip those 3.
There’s even a small “Dog Zone”, complete with it’s own fire hydrant and “Doggie Post”. It’s APPROXIMATELY Here: N43 23.253 W87 52.043 (based on my map software, not GPSr reading). But I think you need to still clean up after Midnight. (Midnight your dog, not Midnight the time)

Steve,
Don’t feel dumb, just behind the times.
Voting took place during August.
Once the voting was over with, they closed the voting thread and removed it.
I’m sure when the design is final they will post and example. The decided upon design has an outline of Wisconsin on one side and a Whitetail Deer on the other … plus other cool features.the THIS is the TOPIC: http://www.gpsthemovie.com
I don’t think I have any phobias exactly.
But while helping my daughter hide a new cache of her design recently(“Star Light, Star Bright”) … I good sized grass snake, slithered in front of us in the grass. Not sure why I “freaked” at first, as they’ve never concerned me before, maybe just caught off guard (I hope).
Sorry, can’t help since mines a Garmin.
But, I’m guessing that who ever will help will have 2 questions:(1) What model is your Magellan?
(2) What is the EXACT error message your getting when this happens?
My 20 cents on this issue …
1. Not sure where the “too many rules on geocaching” factor comes in on this. Doesn’t appear that GC, WGA or Approvers have attempted to stop this type of hides. The “ruling” came from the local authorities.
2. Is it likely that someone will get “zapped” on a cache like this … not likely … but possible. If this is the type of light pole I think we’re talking of, there IS electricity flowing within inches of the cache. It IS possible that either a cable or conduit could have a weak or worn spot, potentially exposing someone to a shock. Personally, I don’t get why these poles don’t have some kind of screw(s) holding the housing in place.
3. Never under estimated a weak spot in insulation potential. I use to do wiring in a factory, I closed a conduit trough cover on a wire chaseway, the metal cover just happened to hit a weak spot in the insulation on a 100amp line (NOT a splice in the cable, but simply a flaw in the insulation of the cable). It melted a quarter size hole out of the thick metal cover, beads of metal imbedded in my safty glasses and it burnt little house in my t-shirt.
4. What recourse does a cache owner have … tell the LAND OWNER (Walmart or local government) to agree with you and talk to the police.
Down for me too … I think it’s official.
Sounds like fun!
Personally, I would do the following, but it’s just my taste …
(1) Have each cache have some sort of minor “educational value”, maybe each container could have some little fact about scouting on it.
(2) If you have more adult assistance/volunteers than space, consider breaking the kids up and sending each group in different order/direction. What I mean is: If you caches are named “A”, “B”, “C” and “D” … have some kids hunt them in that order then have other groups hunt them as “D”, “C”, “B”, “A”. Same caches, just 2 different versions of the piece of paper you hand them. This way they will not be falling each other around, but instead “cross paths” just one time.

Yes! And you better come! (Ok, Please Come.)
It’s on the “Events” page of THIS Website, as “Port Washington Harvest of Caches EVENT”. http://wi-geocaching.com/events[This message has been edited by EnergySaver (edited 09-09-2005).]
Thanks all, for sharing your opinions.
“Event Specific” it will be.I believe the design will include a ship’s wheel and a lighthouse …
… or is it “light house”, or “light-housed”? Maybe I’ll go with a flashlight … or is it …

As I own over 40 cemetery caches, I feel I should say something, but what? Been mulling this topic over since it appeared, and am still not certain ….
‘Tis an interesting situation … I’m not sure what the “most right” thing is for this. But, if I had cemetery caches I would simply update the text of each cache to include the “Bullet Points” mentioned by GrouseTales, to encourage finders to be respectful. Those points worded from the perspective of what you want your finders to know, would be:
– Be respectful when visiting the cemetary.
– Do not pose for pictures in the cemetary.
-Don’t post any cemetary photos in your cache log.
– Don’t hunt this cache after dark.
– Don’t hunt if there are mourners present in the area.quote:

Totally!
I wish Garmin would take the exterior of the eMap, waterproof it and update the “guts”. They’d have a real winner!I also like the way you enter coordinate digits better than how you do it on new models like the eTrex.
Well written, Brian.
I really like your comment at the end … I think if everyone that owns a cemetery cache would place you bullet points in the listing, it would help the situation.A geocaching family that is friends of ours had a daughter that died when she was 4 days old. Every cemetery they see reminds them of the painful memory … families like that and others have suffered enough loss without us “acting poorly” at grave sites. Please keep your actions “in check” at these locations … assume there’s a family with a loss that can’t see you … as they might be quiet and un-noticed, please try to be the same from their perspective and all should be fine.

Geocacher’s Creed buttons from BumbleButtons
Yes, they have great buttons. In fact that’s who will be making the event buttons. Very nice lady to work with.
