I’m not sure that you can.
I would think having WAAS is more than just having a software update, I would think there a little extra hardware inside the newer version GPS receiver to make it happen.
Unless I’m missing something, I think you can’t magically add WAAS to your GPSr.

nope, nope … the a,b,c thing … I did not start that … I don’t know who, but I remember it not being me.

in reply to: Survey Question #1749531

I agree with what “Opossum”, especially when he quote me 🙂

I too feel the 5-star system does not alway help one much .. personally, I wish it was a 10-star system, to a little better seperation … but it’s still open to opinion when people rate their caches.

I’d love to know how far of a walk it is from the parking lot … not so much for my family, as we’ll take what we get … but we’re into high mode for “visitors” coming with u … I think I’ve got about 3 or 4 families waiting their turns, right now … and some like looooooooong walks and some like short … would be nice to plan the afternoon for them, to meet each families comfort level.

Above all … don’t rush just to say you put a cache out … plan it well, make it fun for others and enjoyable for yourself. Not only are you placing your cache for others to find … but your also taking up a piece of “real estate” that another cacher may have been checking out, so make it “a keeper” … not that every one has to be cache of the month material, but do your best to make it a cache that really showcases they area, tree or container that your placing. Sometimes it helps to pick a spot and step back for a moment and look around … maybe 10 trees over was the A+ spot, and you used the B- spot.

“adapt” is an important word, when taking “clever event” hides and turning them into “real” geocaches … remember that your regular caches have to last in the Wisconsin weather and also stand a good chance against non-geocachers (mugglers) finding them.

At an event one has the advantage of not worrying about length of time on durability and the risk that increases with time of a cache being found …. that and you can’t fill a “real” geocache full of ice cubes and give geocachers numb fingers finding it!

in reply to: Lowrance GPS #1749899

Only thing I’ve heard about “Lowrance” units is that if you upload waypoints/coordinates to them via a cable that it takes a long time … like 5 or 10 minutes … assuming this is true, that would be only a concern if you are attending an event … as everyone will be waiting in line behind you, and their units will upload in about 5 to 15 seconds.

I think most of the more common brands for geocaching (ie. Garmin and Magellan) allow you to “pan” around, once you get up out of the “basic” models. I like being able to use 4-arrows to move around too … not just zooming in/out … which works great on my Garmin. Did I mention that Garmin’s work well.

Can you please post the non-cropped version of the photo? I think you accidential cropped out the “eye candy”.

in reply to: Survey Question #1749523

I like variety … which of course does nothing to help answer your survey.

Mix it up … that way everyone is bound to got to some of your caches, if not all.

While I like HIDE mystery/puzzle caches … because it helps me drain off excess creativity.

My favorite caches to FIND are the ones that leave my “jaw dropping” one way or another … maybe it’s a beautiful park that I’ve just walked through for a mile, maybe it’s just the most amazing look tree that the cache is hidden in, maybe it’s a really cool container, or just some surprise at the end.

I typically like finding larger containers, especially if I’m seeking in a location that has room for a larger container … I don’t like walking through the woods, passing all kinds of cool tree cavities, to end up finding a micro hidden under a rock in the middle of nothingness.

I admit that I’m not much into finding Micros … but if the location is right, they’re fine … this is just the way I feel, does not make me right, does not mean others feel otherwise. About 6 months ago, I stop caring about how many caches we find, I’m no longer the member of the family that runs past others to find it … I rarely hold the GPSr any more, I let the kids or are “guest of the week” hold our 2 GPSrs … I now just take in the scenery and enjoy watching them find it .. then when some of them are at the finders tree, then I have a shot at it. All I’m saying is … variety … variety for the various cachers and even the ever changing likes and dislike of cachers like me.

I should maybe clarify my earlier posting (however the link does explain it all) … the are many steps/procedures to set up the whole process … in summary:

    (1) You must have a Premium (Paid) account on http://www.geocaching.com

    (2) When you are logged into your account, clic on [My Account] (over on the left) and then [Member Features] (last item in the Quick View row across the top). From there click on [Pocket Query Generator]. You will use this to setup a “Pocket Query” that will email you a .GPX files with the data for the caches you choose. (In my case, I have it email me every Friday, the 200 caches closest to my zip code, that I have NOT found and are NOT MINE).

    (3) You need to install software on your DESKTOP computer called “Spinner”. When you get your .GPX file emailed to you … you can use the .GPX file to load coordinates into your GPSr (assuming you have a cable) … but for PDA users, you also feed the .GPX file into “Spinner”. “Spinner” then creates (or “spins”) a tiny local website on your DESKTOP computer of all the geocaches that were in the .GPX file (in my case, 200 caches). “Spinner” is a geocaching specific piece of software, that you can download for free.

    (4) But now you have to get “spun” website on to your Palm or Pocket PC. This is why you need to download free software called “Plucker” (it’s not just for geocaching, but putting any website on a PDA). “Plucker” has 2 parts, one for on your DESKTOP and one for on your Palm or Pocket PC. The Desktop portion prepares the files for your PDA, and PDA portion allows you to view the various cache web pages, onces you’ve sync’d them to your PDA.

Lots of steps … lots of things to understand. Unfortunately that’s the way it is. But the link in my prior posting takes you through it. Once you get it setup, the “weekly” process is something you get use to doing and goes quicker. If your not really comfortable around computers, you might want to have a friend help you out that is.

    in reply to: Plucker #1749632

First off … don’t try loading a .loc file into it … it should be a .gpx file. You also say your trying to load YOUR .loc file … the file you want (again .gpx not .loc), is nothing YOU generate from map software for example .. but instead must be generated automatically and emailed to you from a query from the geocaching.com website (and only available if your a paying premium member). This special file contains much more the coordinates, but also all the special data (text, hints, recent finds, etc) that is used by the software that “spins” the files you need. A normal .loc or .gpx file that is generated from your own map software, does not have any of the stuff you need.

You should be following ALL the instructions at … http://www.geocacher-u.com/resources/paperless.html

in reply to: Harrington Beach – Geo Friendly Website! #1750123

It’s all about breaking down “barriers” one at a time … and one on one (at least in this case) … I got Harrington’s webmasters interest peeked, then I prepared the entire web page so he had to just dropped it into his site … the rest was him just seeing the value in adding it to the site. It also helps when people that use the park for other purposes start asking what’s going on (ie. the crowds at an event) and it stirs up interest in the public.

    in reply to: Wi-Geo vs. Geocache.com #1749509

Glad you finally show up. Just a suggestion … I would not worry about it or watch it much … I think it’s just there for curiousity sake … it’s not like people use it for any incredibly amazing purpose, like deciding what cache to go to next. Unless I’m wrong … if someone else uses it for more than “geo eye candy” on this site, let me know … so that I can change my ways, too.

    in reply to: So… #1758526

We made the decision to not go several months ago … we knew we’d want some “down time” after I spent several months of what would have been “family time” planning the April 30th event.

However, we are planning on spending the entire afternoon/evening today, taking a “newbie” family out … we’ve been trying to get schedules to work out for about 3 months … they are “power hikers” and I’ve had to plan a schedule of some semi-hard terrain choices for them.

    in reply to: Wi-Geo vs. Geocache.com #1749504

Bad news … it’s not working for you.

Good news … you got GC to actually answer a question and quickly … I didn’t think they’d bother to address something like this, as it’s not really a concern about their site doing what it technically suppose to be doing.

in reply to: Meaningless Question of the Day (5/20/05) #1749514

We don’t have a dog … but we like other people’s dogs … including my neighbor’s Boxer (Lily), she’s two years old, born on Easter. We love nothing better than to see her looking in our patio door’s window “pining” for our kid’s to come out and chase her. You can actually hear her sighing out there as she sits waiting for us to get done with supper. But we don’t like dogs that jump up on people … our daughter was scare by a dog that jumped on her when she was 4 yrs old, and she now needs to alway “check out” a dog first, before she will get near (which is a good thing, I guess).

Picture of Lily hiding behind our plastic rabbit ornament … http://wi-geocaching.com/cgi-bin/slide2/album.pl?photo=00000271/lily.jpg;function=logout;photo_height=500

I don’t understand it either when people don’t clean up after there dog … it’s their responsibility, and the world is not their personal dumping ground.

I don’t know why some people don’t like dogs … but maybe those are the people that rolled in one of the “land mines”.
