I too have started keeping TB numbers, as of this past weekend.

in reply to: Secrets of Stonehaven – Post Event News/Info #1737933

    Excellent question …

    Yes, it went well.
I’m not awaring of anyone that did not honor our requests (including the car pooling … there were only 96 parking spots and we had 92 teams come … yet we managed to keep a couple spots open at all times).

The advance release of coordinates to me is 75% of the reason the event was a success. Without doing so we would have tons of unhappy people (even though “TS” brought his great octupus invention), the lines would have been way too long and slow.

I also “Beamed” about 12 people the handouts in paperless fashion to their Palm computers.

Now MY QUESTION … did any of you find the beaming truely handy, as in did you really hunt the caches using your Palm … or was it just a “cool thing”, but you resorted to using the paper copies to get more of a “feel” for the 40 caches?

in reply to: Backgrounds for Cache Pages ???? #1749389

I WILL STEP FORWARD AND SAVE DA-FU!

I think people have ignored you, cause this is a bit tricky … but let’s give it a try.

First off, I just added a fishing background to one of my listings … check out “Balance Beam Creek” at 53074. Please note how it will turn out, it will not be much of a border on the top/sides, but more on the bottom, that’s just how it turns out, when displayed on the GC.Com pages. No options there.

Now how did I do it …

    (1) Find an image that fits the normal requirements for an image file that can be “attached” to a cache page (ie. no more than 600 pixels wide, no more than 125k in file size). I found some files like this by search for “fishing backgrounds” on the web … if you want to use the one I found, or it’s lighter version … goto http://autumnweb.com/Roxys/Holidays/4ManlyFishingBrdr-n-TileGrfx.html …. then right-click and “Save Picture As” … BUT take note where you save the picture on your computer, so you can find it later.

    (2) Now, create your geocache web page, as normal. When your done making the cache page, then view it as normal. Click on the [Upload Image] choice in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then simply upload the image you saved on your computer from step #1 Maybe give it a name like “Background”.

    (3) Now view your cache page again. Scroll down below the map on the page, but before where the log entries will appear. Click on the name of the image you uploaded (in my example it’s called “Background”.

    (4) You should now have JUST the image in a new window on your browser. Highlight the URL address of the Image (in my example, it says http://img.groundspeak.com/cache/3e1455c4-60b9-4aa3-b72c-3ff2d57a628d.jpg) AND right-click then copy … this should copy the web address of your image to your clipboard.

    (5) Now close the window that has just the image. Click on [Edit Listing] to open up your cache page for editing. Scroll down about one screen, to a spot just above the coordinates for your listing. You’ll see a field called “Background Image URL). Click into that box and Paste your clipboard contents to that box. The box should now contain the URL web address of your background image.

    (6) Scroll down to the end of the Editing Cache screen … click the two “Yes” boxes and hit [Edit Listing].

    (7) Go back to viewing your Cache Listing … it should now have the background.

    Best of luck!

NOTE: sometimes people do NOT upload the image file to the GC.com cache listing page … they might have their own web space through their web/email provider … but you will need to know the steps to upload to your web space on your own, as that varies depending on the web provider … in that case you would upload the image file to your web space and reference that URL file location, rather than an image file uploaded on GC.com

This time of year … rummage sales!

I hit the big Belgium rummage sale this weekend … found lots of high class geo-treasures and most of them were in the “Free” piles … also got a great container for my next cache. Plus a brand new “Golf Cooler” .. holds up to 12 cans, has a cell phone holder, and note pad place, a mesh area for golf balls (I mean TBs) … $2 in the box, unused … the price tag said $27! Yipee, for me.

This is a bit off subject … but … it hits me as interesting that someone caching for such a short perior of time (March) with so few finds (33) … would have bothered to setup such an involved website to “rate” caches. Nothing of value in this comment … just find it a bit interesting.

in reply to: WGA picnic date #1749284

I too would love to know ASAP when the picnic is … because I need to compete against 3 other people for putting in for vacation.

HOWEVER, one thing we should all understand (I assume) is that this is not as simple as the WGA picking a date out of a hat … it’s more about selecting WHERE the event is going to be held, explaining to them WHAT it is we plan on doing, then actually reserving the facility for that Date. To blindly pick a date, without having a location for 200 people; is a bit like buying a spare tire, before you go out shopping for the used car.

A “newbie” (ie 3 finds) posted a find for one of my caches this past weekend … they said something to the effect, “finally a cache with good stuff in it, ALL THE OTHER ones we’ve found so far had just junk in them, AGAIN this is our biggest beef with geocaching”.

I’m wondering what they mean by “junk”, if they think they’re going to find gold braclets, they’re in for disappointment. And I guess all the other ones they found, would mean 2!

in reply to: Meaningless Question of the Day 5/9/05 #1749286

    Hey, Da Fu!

My main “machine” is an old Garmin Emap, with an added yellow rubber perfect fitting “jacket”.

To date, I’ve geocached with 3 teams that are running around with Magellans … in all cases we ended up in the same place, BUT my unit settled down on the correct coordinates as I approached them … the 3 other teams, always overshot and said “no, it’s 80′ more that way” … I’ve learned to stop at MY ground zero and wait for their units to catch up with their feet, within 20′ of where I’m standing.

Again, as of Stonehaven, this has happened 3 times now … seems like a very big coincidence.

in reply to: DNR meeting on 5/3/05 #1750119

I have tons of photos … when we started caching I bought a digital and have kept every caching photo we ever took (not sure why), all are on my hard drive at full resolution.

I will shoot some your way. Since I have so many … what are you/they looking for … “well framed” family shots of geocaching OR ones more specific to a DNR-ish setting (ie. shots at State Parks, wildlife, etc.). I would imagine they have plenty of wildlife shots already, so I would think only ones reflecting specific to geocaching “scenes” would apply (assume any of us actually have a picture of a dear WITH a travel bug.

What happens if you hit this button marked [Dele

in reply to: Using the board #1740507

Wow! [End] button … no help from Bill Gates this time, just the WGA.

My vote …. leave it as is …. The [End] is a much better solution than the “pain” of always dealing with the fact that you can’t see the original subject up top and adjusting my feeble mind to reading up hill.

Wow! Well I’ll be darn … yes that would be easier. Should I send the “thank you” check to you or Bill Gates?
