The problem is in the past, as I’ve finished the cut/paste job a couple days ago.

Just to clarify … the problem was going from Excel to GPS Software, NOT the other way around. In the case of Garmin’s MapSource you’d don’t need to export, you can highlight the columns on the screen and cut/paste. The problem was that it didn’t work in the other direction.

I was given some coordinates via an email document (not in anyones GPSr or GPS software), just plain old email text. Since there were 25 of them plus waypoint names, I thought it would be great to have save time by formating the columns (waypoint name and coordinates) in excel to match my MapSource software columns. But no luck, MapSource any excepts a clipboard paste from another MapSource document. If these were in a GPSr or GPS Software to start with, it would have been a no brainer, but such was not the case.

Congrats to “John Robie” for turning around that first round of bad luck. I see they found some north-west of Adell yesterday! Keep it up!

Ha! Another geocacher is fallen for my evil plot!

The GC27E3 “I Believe” night cache that was mentioned is an excellent multi-cache. However, read the list first as there is some “foggyness” as to if it’s ok to be there at night. Also be aware that the final coordinates are off … read the more recent log entries (including mine) to set things straight.

Ohhhhh Never Mind … I just started wacking away at it … copy Name from Excel, past Name into new Waypoint, copy Coordinate from Excel, past Coordinate into Waypoint … I’ve only got 25 of them to do and about halfway done … I guess it just seems like it will take two hours.

Worried more about errors than anything. But, if I then highlight all the Waypoint entries and copy/paste them to Excel (it works in that direction), I can then alpha sort them and make sure they all pair up perfectly.

Thanks all for exercising their fingers and brains on my behalf!

To my “repliers” so far …

Ctrl-V … Nope, thought of that right away … actually you can copy/paste from one MapSource file to another and from MapSource to Excel … but Paste is grayed-out when the clipboard contains something other than a fresh MapSource copy.

Why am I even playing with Excel … I’m starting with plain email text of MANY waypoint names and coordinates that I got from “someone” for “something”, they are not in that “someones” GPSr, so they only exist in plain text. I column-ized the data in Excel, with all anticipation of it working in this direction. But Nope.

Contacting someone about importing “work around” … good idea, CH, I’ll try that.

My number one piece of advice … that no one gave me last year (thanks alot) … Come late May, ALWAYS have your bug spray with you, they will start biting mid-cache and never stop until fall. We had it in the car, must get to car, but noooooooooooo, we’re in the woods. We had our “first no find” ever when we went screaming out of the woods on 6/5/04; we were too itchy to do anything more that day.

    Thanks all!

I used the Drop Down to mark it missing.
I thought there must be such a function, but I was looking for it in the “Add a Log Entry”, rather than in the Drop Down list.

Sorry your having a troubled start.

As I suspect you know now … it’s just as important to read the most recent log entries as it is to read the text of the cache listing. Unless your in the mood to play “super man”, avoid caches with more than 1 or 2 “can’t finds” as the most recent activity; the only time I’d go after those is if emailed the owner to find out it’s still there (and maybe got an extra clue or two).

If you want to have better luck on your next outting (especially in the snow), look for caches that have been found very recently by others (right now I’d say something found since Saturday’s snow). You don’t always have to play it that safe, but in the short term you might be happier.

    Caution: shameless plug follows …
Maybe you should come down my way, as several of my finds in the port washington / saukville / grafton area have been found on Sunday. Of all my hides my Valley of Oz series at 53080 is guaranteed “snow proof”; in fact a new family found it Sunday, with 2 of the 4 finds by a 4 year old! (way to go little member of “Finders 5”!)

All seems to be well … went to check on this myself … the bridge IS moved, but is NOT open to the public yet, however construction crews are driving on it and letting photo-hounds like me walk on it. In theory, it would appear that it will open as schedule on Monday.

If you want to check out some photos … go to my new Travel Bug, in honor of the big doings in our little nearby village … http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=131736

    Update …

All still seems unschedule for “the chop, slide and drop” tonight at 6pm. I just hope they don’t drop it in the river and leave us stranded.

Was kind of creeping, I was crossing the bridge about an hour ago, as they were cutting the bolts at the pavement level that hold the bridge to the approach roadway. I guess those bolts aren’t very important, since I was still driving on it.

in reply to: Policy update – What questions do YOU have #1750114

    To a couple of wzbt03’s questions/comments …

    – I don’t think from what I’ve read so far, there are plans to have a fee to pay but just a form to complete.

    – I think the DNR and more importantly the local Rangers, have a right to know where something is hidden in there park. One reason to make sure it’s not in a “nature sensitive area”; Harrington Beach for example, does not allow pets on certain trail areas, to protect certain species, they also “don’t like it” when people leave the trails in those, but the remaining 99% of the park is ok for these activities. Also, in case a muggler finds a container it’s good for park management to know that it’s ok, rather than some sort of threatening situation.

… just my 2 cents, from working with my friendly neighborhood park rangers.

In theory, it seems like you could do it. To me the issues that come to mind are:

    (1) When your not moving (as in tee-ing up) you will not get accurate directional indications, but then again I suspect that alignment of the tee platform would be just as handy as the accuracy of a GPSr arrow. So yes, the GPSr would help you with distance to the tee.

    (2) Assuming you hit the ball to the green, having the coordinates of the green are helpful. But if you can’t see very well, how do you know where you hit the ball; and for that matter how do you find it, when it’s not on the green.

Part of the solution, might be making the balls easier to find … check out http://www.radargolf.com (here: http://www.low-vision.org/golf.html), they sell a hand held system ($300) and micro chipped balls ($40 dozen) … lot of money for the balls, so it’s a good thing they’re easier to find.

I would also suggest the golf section on http://www.low-vision.orghttp://www.low-vision.org/golf.html
