I think it’s funny that they have a different color for the $20 first sticker vs. the $10 second sticker. I tell my wife, that my car (with the $10) has me marked as the “cheap park patron”, with the “sticker of shame”.

Tip of the day … buy your park sticker BEFORE going to a geo-event held in a state park, to avoid the lines. (Tami, don’t say it!)

All … the latest news is it will be closed 6pm Fri 3/18 until 6am Mon 3/21 (per yesterday’s newspaper) … but I just can’t believe everything will be done on time.

Tami … take the northern detour, it puts you on a straight west to east path to Harrington any way … I will email you the suggested route. And, stop shamelessly plugging our event, I’m way too popular the way it is … I knew I should have went with “LadyKiller” instead of “EnergySaver”, but my wife wouldn’t let me! [UPDATE: directions sent, ironically the “detour” is 4 miles shorter than the normal route, go figure.]

Just to leaving nothing un-answered … if you happen to be using a laptop with USB but no Serial port … no fears, they make adapters to plug serial cables into USB ports … such as: http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=382979

(I’ve not found a laptop in a geocache yet, so I’m not speaking from experience, but I see no reason for the cable not to work for GPSr units if it works for PDAs and such)

With the risk of making this even easier … here’s one software option, that many use … http://www.easygps.com/

Since this is a class environment … IF you don’t plan on using the unit for road routes, but just finding waypoints … I agree with others, spend less money. I’m happy with my two Garmins (an old eMap with roads, and a GPS72 without roads).

One additional consideration that I might add … do you anticipate multiple students looking at the same unit at the same time? If so, consider something with a larger display. Again the GPS72 would be a good choice … the GPS72’s screen is 45% wider than that of a eTrex. If you want the wider screen, but also roads, go up to the GPS76. The buttons are bigger on these units too.

    J.R. ….

I’ve never held a Garmin 12, but my “guest” unit is the Garmin GPS72. This too has the round connector (under a rubber plug in my case) that others speak of. If you buy the cable, you should be able to download from a computer, assuming the computer has a serial port. What you might be confused about, is that you can NOT download maps/roads for navigating on your next trip to Florida or something. But you SHOULD be able to use the cable to download geocache coordinates (waypoints), with the free software others have indicated.

Here’s a link to where you can buy the cable for your Garmin 12 … http://store.yahoo.com/gilsson/gagps12se.html … a steal at $8.30! They seem to have other stuff too for the Garmin 12, including combo cables (so you can download and power the unit without batteries, not sure where you’d find a geocaches with power).

    Way to go J.R.!
Sorry we did get together yet … but not our fault … it’s that bad weather and those horses.

I agree with others, a Garmin 12 will get the job done. Our 2nd GPSr for “guests” is a lower cost unit too. I’m find the accuracy just as good and for geocaching it has a couple features that I like better than my “good” unit. My comments to a few people that are deciding on what GPSr to get and how much to spend, is more a question on “what else” do you want to do with it … such as, traveling and mapping ability (ie. our “guest” unit has zero road mapping ability, but who cares in our case.)

P.S. – Come find my geocaches first!

We’re coming! Yipee! Yahooooo! (burp) Opps!

    Shhhhhh! …..
That day is our wedding anniversary and 2 weeks later is Mrs. EnergySaver’s birthday … so if you see Geri, give her a big “happy anniversary / birthday” hug and we’ll get her even more addicted to geocaching.

(she’ll never see this posting, as I’m just getting her into logging finds, it will be 6+ months before I get her to actually come to this website too.)

You should see a dentist, if you get plaque after drinking wine! Sorry, sorry, sorry … I’ll go to bed early for that one.

Darn. We’re going to #5 this weekend (ran out of energy last time). We’ll keep our eye out for your TB for a future opportunity.

in reply to: Geocaching Express Logger #1748486

Very cool concept …. will need to try on my next find. Personally, I love to give detail logs of my experience at each cache (for the sake of the cache owner), so not sure how I’d benefit from this … but then again we’re pretty low volume on our finds.

What would be interesting to see is how well it works to log finds at Events … logging the find of each temp hide, without waiting to refresh back to the event page (for those of us who live out in the sticks and only get a 28.8 dial up speed and can’t get DSL or Cable).

Ouch watch where your bumping, that hurt!

I’m sort of doing this already in the Ozaukee area. I currently have 4 families that want to get into caching waiting for the weather to get good enough for THEM. We’re taking out the more hardy of them this weekend. The only problem is that they’re all word of mouth from me (with the exception of John Robie to my north), so I may need to clone myself.

However, just yesterday an opportunity has been thrown my way from a “public source” in the area, for “mass exposure” in my area … but right now that’s a secret … more details in about 3 months.

Welcome aboard to the new board!
Just checking out your photo on the “About Us” page … it’s sooooo amazing how similar the new board members look to the old board members.

If it happens to come through my hands, I will make sure it visits a school … I’m in the process of planning a Field Trip / Class on geocaching/gps satelites/world coordinates with my daughter’s teacher (7th/8th grade, small school in Ozaukee County). That will be in early May, but if I get my hands on it before then, I’ll make sure it makes a guest appearance. So, we shall see if my paths cross with your class TB.

    Team Venom …

Help – sure, will be in touch when I learn more, however the talk right now is an end of April clean up, and I’m very busy then.

Lions Den clean up – excellent idea, will have to add that to the plate of ideas. Would actually be a very good mini-event area … since it’s fairly large area and all the best hiding trees in the county are there.
