My coins came today and I am very impressed. These are much better than I expected. Every aspect of ordering and the coins greatly exceeded my expectations. Job well done!

    PDA Recommendations:
For caching I would recommend a PALM. Why, they are cheaper and crash less.

I use the PALM IIIxe, an old dinosaur with only 8mb, but it holds 1,200 caches in 3mb of ram using CacheMate.

Another factor is that it runs on real replaceable batteries, not rechargable ones. I average 1 month on 2 AAA with daily use, and sometimes caching. If you get a rechargable unit, make sure to find a field charger that uses a 9v or car charger.

Now if I have the change to get a new one, it will probably be a PALM TX for about $300. Lots of ram, large color screen, Wi-Fi, an Bluetooth. You can find any Wi-Fi spot and connect to http://www.geocaching.com, or the reduced interface of wap.geocaching.com and log your finds. Get a compatable Bluetooth phone and surf the web from your car or cache site. Great for looking at last 5 logs for the latest updates on a cache when you can not find it.

Check for free memory about count on about 400 caches per meg. Then think how large of an area you cache in, and how many are left in that area. The 32mb models with about 20mb user memory left will give about 12,000 caches to choose from. Get ones with removable memory slots and this will never be a problem.

Looking for a cheaper one, most of the Z (Zire) series will work, with some at $99. Even cheaper pick up a used one. I believe ebay has already been mentioned.

    Hope some of this helps

When I think winter friendly I believe it should be:

-In a container that you can get open when cold.
-Be accessable with 12″ of snow. It could either be off the ground, or protected under a fallen tree when covering bark can be removed.
-Not in a position that it will get frozen to the ground.
-In a place you can get to after it snows. Do they plow the parking areas & access roads in the area.

Some caches I save for winter time due to bugs, tree cover, wet/mud. Those deserve the winter friendly marking.

When I place a cache, I also think about if it will be a winter friendly one. I have altered where it would go based on that several times.

Just my thoughts on how to use it.

I have been mostly paperless since I started using GSAK/Palm/Cachemate/Garmin etrex.

It would be nice to see Madison events and I would try to help out with any paperless teaching events.

We were able to quickly get a First Find at lunch today by just using lostoutdoors.com maps. I left my unit at home and did not have time to go get it. The map, reading the listing, and a little common sense lead us right to it.

I have been using CacheMate for about a year now and it is great. I have a VERY old palm IIIxe and it is slow merging and searching when you get over 750-1000 per database. I solved that by having each area in a different database and it works fast. The newer units probably do not have this problem. It is a very stable program and I have only had one crash and it was with an older version.
Then I use GSAK to upload same pocketquery to GPS, but I usually filter out the 4-5 difficulty caches.

I have run into a problem with my GPS filling up with lots of caches, it only holds 1000. Does anyone know of an easy way to mass delete old waypoints for a Garmin Ledgend?
