We, too, live in Racine and would be happy to take you on a few caches. We’ve showed many the sport/game, including our friends who have two 4 year olds and two 6 year olds. We live on the northside (actually Caledonia) and always welcome the chance to cache with a newbie. You can check our GPS out and see how it works, then go from here. We bought ours locally and there are many, many options.

Feel free to contact us at wsfolk at wi dot rr dot com, or just go through the main geocaching site and look us up and e-mail us through there. We’re free many evenings and some weekends and would love to show you the basic ropes.

A big thank you to T & tb who took time out of their Sunday to come down to the lakefront to cheer me on. I can’t begin to thank them enough…it means a lot to me that you guys did that.

I had great support from Mrs. Traker in this goal. It took a year’s worth of training and many hours of lost cache time to achieve this goal but in the end it was worth it.

I completed it in 4 hours 45 min and 55 sec…and did not try to find a cache along the way…but kept thinking about it as I went past some very familiar parks!!

    Thanks again everyone!!

    One more to add: MI
Now we’re up to 10! 40 more to go!

in reply to: How many? #1747550

Here are our totals for 30 miles:

There are 320 caches in that area,
    5 of them are ours,
210 of the 320 we have found (17 are currently disabled),
115 are still listed as unfound by us (4 of these are disabled.)

We didn’t realize how many caches are this close now!

I’ve heard lots of good things about the ‘little yellow’ Garmin Etrex. It’s in the price range you listed and there are many, many cachers that have reached 100, 200, 300+ finds with this GPSr. You can get them nearly anywhere (sporting goods stores, sporting goods sections of other stores, etc.) or maybe try the Garmin website.

They appear to lack some buttons, but the functionality is there. If she goes that route, there are many that I’m sure would be more than willing to give GPSr lessons.
