I agree with using COTM as a guide (although it only gives you a handful). Unfortunately, when events win, that doesn’t help in this particular plight as the event is over and done with. As events are always awesome and well attended, and no one person is responsible for its success, maybe ‘event caches’ shouldn’t qualify for COTM???

This message is from Mrs. Traker, with no discussion from Mr. Traker, so his opinions may differ (they always do!).

First, I want to say, ‘hear, hear!!’ to Tony. Thank you for your courage to speak your mind, and saying it so nicely in an attempt to not offend. I agree with basically everything you said.

In addition, I do want to say that we need a few 1/1 caches in every area. In our efforts to introduce people to geocaching, our explanations of the sport are usually met with skepticism (you wander around with a little gadget in the woods and what do you get out of it?!?). Therefore the best way is to show someone what geocaching is. Because they are unsure, you don’t want to take them on really hard ones, that take a long time, as you will surely lose interest. We’ve taken many groups on simple, walk-up and find it caches, just to show them how to use the GPS and what geocaching is. They are usually so excited in doing this that we forget that this was a ‘simple’ one for us.

Lastly, this is a family sport for many. Families come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and physical abilities. To make sure this is an all-involved sport, we need to have variety in the hides.

Therefore I encourage all placers of cachers to keep up with the comments on your cache pages. If people are commenting that it is harder or easier than you thought, change the rating and description to be more helpful. If you are in search of the challenge, read the descriptions and comments thoroughly as people do share alot, and you get to know other cachers ratings, and you can use those as a guide.

I love the variety of this sport–hides, environments, and fellow cachers.

Thanks, Tony, for leaving a little room on your soapbox for others to join. I’ll jump off now, luckily it’s just a short jump down.

Those pesky critters were almost more numerous than the caches. All throughout the weekend, it became a little game for all of us to do a ‘tick check.’ After certain caches, one of us would find a tick, then we’d all check each other. At one location we counted over a dozen ticks on the four of us. We even found a tick in our clothes when we were unpacking at home on Sunday, and another in the cachemobile the next morning.

They definitely were quite pesky at Hartman Creek. Luckily they didn’t damper the great fun had at the campout!

Mr. Traker is loading the car, while the Mrs. is checking this site. We’re not addicted, not anxious, not excited, not…. not wanting to go to work tomorrow–just want to go camping and caching!!!!

Congrats on hitting 300! The milestones will just keep coming now.

in reply to: you know you are addicted to geocaching when… #1747256

    You know you’re addicted when….
you are sending a professional e-mail at work letting them know that you will be attending the conference and will “pay cache at the door.” You don’t even notice the error, send the e-mail, and get a response from the person questioning ‘cache?’!! Oops!

If it’s still functional, I might have a place for it. I work for Second Harvest Food Bank and some of our hunger-relief agencies are in need of more freezer storage, but can’t afford to purchase a freezer. If you are interested in donating it (and getting a tax write-off), I may be able to find an agency in need of a freezer and make the link up. What size is it? If you are interested, let me know.

This is what we are questioning…Do others vote for caches that they did months ago?
Does that mean that we could vote for the 2003 campout today because it was just that good and deserved to win?

It not only deserves the award but was also worth my vote…

We are not questioning if the cache deserved COTM…IMHO there are alot of caches that deserve to win but only 12 months in the year!

I don’t think there is anyone out there that can say that their cache is better then anyone elses and it amazes me that some of our best cache placers have not won the award even though they have many caches that deserve it.

    We can’t agree more…

So to answer the question “Is the system rigged” – I highly doubt it.

I’m sorry if you took it that way but I do not think anyone asked that! It was not implied either, sorry for the confusion.

So before anyone starts questioning the process, try out the COTM’s that have won and compare them for yourself. You might just decide like I did that someone else has one you would like to vote for this month, even if you have done it in the past.

We have done a few of COTM winners and agree that they all deserved the title…once again we ask what is the time frame that groups use to select their choice…how far back do you go to say that ‘this cache deserves COTM for April even though I did it back in November?’
Things can change in the time between when the last person (or you) had done the cache. We try to only select caches we have done in the past month…this way we are sure that the cache itself is still in good condition.
