First to Ken…aawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! That’s sweet!
Second, I didn’t really discover a ‘passion’, but I did discover something new about myself. All my life I’ve HATED history. Did everything possible to avoid the classes and learned just enough to pass tests and forgot the info immediately after.
Then while geocaching, I’ve noticed “Brown Signs”, those historical narrative markers all over usually found at many virtual caches, roadside caches, or on the way to caches. I’ve really enjoyed reading them and learning historical tidbits about the area. They are short enough for my ADD-like attention span, but I really read and remember them. Now even when we’re driving somewhere, not geocaching, you’ll hear me yell “brown sign” and Bill knows to pull over so I can read the info.

Now that I was finally able to view the file (couldn’t open it, had to save it to view it), I have a few quick notes. In trying to make sure it’s accessible to many, I would quickly delete those on Hwy 31, 32, 11, and 142. The 31 and 32 ones are too close to the lake, and the Hwy 11 and 142 ones are too far south for the rest of the counties.
I’ll have to do some mapping on the others to see how accessible they are. One very easy one is Hwy 20 from I-94 to 90th Street as it’s right off I-94. Some of the Hwy 36 and 45 ones may be good too as they are west.
Our vote would be for Racine–far northside–so it’s accessible for Kenosha and Milwaukee people as well (as well as our friends in northern IL that visit often)
If Racine gets chosen, we’d be happy to help narrow down the choices of highways in the list by accessibility to all and need for attention. Just let us know.
Hey Jeff-
Neat idea. Just checked the website (only the home page) and love the idea. Can’t wait until I have more time to explore more of the site.Just a note–you have a typo in ‘definitely’ under your signature at the bottom. Just a friendly FYI.
For those that don’t like the “real” camping of a campout, remember there is always Trudy camping (also known as hotel-camping). As has happened in years past, some cachers local to the area can provide a list of a variety of Trudy-campsites that are nearby for use.
Depending on schedules each month, we’d be interested. We miss the “old” breakfasts in SE WI and this sounds like a revisit of those.
Coming from working in nonprofits all my life, I’ve found some great resources that are either cheap or free. At my last job, we downloaded a program called PDF995 from the internet for free and it allowed us to convert any file into a read-only PDF. It was really simple to download. Once installed, go back to your file, go to File-Print and the PDF995 should be an option to choose.
Good luck!
Publisher is the best, cheap, but easy-to-use program for newsletters and brochures. Good luck!
It’s winter and some aren’t caching as much. Let’s see what they are like when there are lots of spring/summer events and other activity.
I’d just do a search for “nonprofit accounting software” on the internet and look up some of the suggestions I mentioned. I think Blackbaud’s basic package is about $700, I’m not sure what others are.
This is a hot topic as there has been much debate on how many caches can one cacher truly maintain, how many quality caches can a new cacher place since they’ve only even seen a few to use as examples, etc?
In my personal opinion, I’d hold off on the placements for now. You’ve got a good start at finding and hiding! Go out and find some more, get some more examples of what’s out there. Also, wait to see how people receive the ones you’ve placed–see what suggestions they have, their comments, and whether or not the maintenance is doable. You’d be surprised the observations people make that you never would have thought of and how much repair/replacement needs to be done.
Welcome to caching and we look forward to meeting you at the events!
How in-depth do you want your nonprofit to track things (how detailed are fundraising efforts going to be tracked—i.e. per donor specifically, or just general per event, etc)? I know last fall Flushingrouse and I worked a bit on the nonprofit incorporation, but never heard back from him to proceed. Before you purchase software, I’d get the incorporation going. Through this process, you’ll have to figure out some operating procedures, thus determining the level of complexity. Blackbaud, Fund E-Z, and MIP all have specific nonprofit accounting softwares. I think Quickbooks might have a nonprofit version also.
I’m still willing to help with the nonprofit process if you need me. Let me know.
Thanks for sharing all these details, pics and maps. Really made me smile about little Bossy’s adventures!
Last year it was Mother’s Day weekend. Although some didn’t like this conflict, the park availability often dictates the date. Was a park decided on?
I like the idea of the WGA sponsorship. For only $25, that’s a cheap way to advertise and show support.
