I’ve seen this one on TV and Garmin has one more as well, just as funny. Keep your eye out for them.

We’re in Racine and have taught geocaching to a middle school class before. We’d love to help, depending on date/time. Please send us an e-mail here or through our geocaching.com profile with more info.

We’d also be glad to tag along with you on a few finds to share our experiences and answer any questions you may have.

No matter what anyone says, our pets ARE a big part of our families. They give us unconditional love, depend on us, and support us. I’m sorry for your loss.

    Cheezehead makes an interesting point:

“There are more and more Geocachers up north that you relize. Some do not know of this site is here and those that do, do not visit because it tends to to deal with the southern part of the state. ”

well, if there are many northern cachers, but they are frustrated because of ‘southern’ topics, why aren’t they posting more? Do you think they’d really post more if they had their own special forum? Then, if they have their own special forum, should us southerners not read it and participate. I think less is more in the number of specialty forums, therefore we all can read, learn, and grow in this sport from everyone, without having to ‘find’ interesting topics.

Just like the upcoming political elections….if you don’t like how something is running, get involved and do something about it. You don’t see any northern posts, but there are northern cachers, then they should post more.

Saw this post last night in time to set the DVR for the show. Great job Brian. Love the pictures also! Great press for the WGA.

Thanks. Now you can go find many, many caches without the added insight of reviewing them first!!!!

Trudy & the Beast: how would Barbie like competition? I think she’d get a little jealous if you brought more to sit beside her in the car.

in reply to: Help Feed the hungry #1766300

I wouldn’t want to discourage anyone from giving to the hungry, but I thought I’d give everyone the full story on this.

I used to work for America’s Second Harvest of WI, the largest hunger relief organization in the state of WI. When we heard about this a number of years ago, we contacted Campbell’s seeing where the soup was going and how could we benefit. We were told they already donate to us (which they did). When we asked how the contest worked, they just let us know that the soup that they donate, they would probably have already donated (dented cans, labels falling off, etc.–perfectly good soup, just not saleable at a grocer). We asked if the voting really affected where the donated soup would go, and they told us that they attempt to donate to the ‘voted for’ areas, but it depended on the amount, where their warehouses were, and overall costs in doing transportation of the donation.

Campbell’s does donate to the hungry, so they do give charitably, just don’t think this program makes them really do something more than their corporation annually gives. This promo just get more people hitting their website.

If you truly want to give, I would remind people that the holidays are a hard time on many families with limited incomes (more mouths to feed with family visiting). Do your own food drive at your company or with your organization and give to your local pantry. Most needed items are always soup, cereal, chili/stew, boxed meals, and peanut butter.

I like puzzle caches, sort of. Mr. Traker LOVES puzzle caches, therefore if I can’t figure it out in a timeframe that fits my very short attention span, then I can count on him to figure it out. He’ll spend hours and hours working on it, months and months (i.e. Huh? #1…thanks jjjtba!!!!).

This hobby/sport/game is all about adventure. Different people have different definitions of what they like in an adventure. It’s nice that some like to make adventures of the mind.

in reply to: Cache Permanence #1766007

Our philosophy has been to place ‘permanent’ caches, but there has been alot of discussion on this. Many feel that after a year or two, the nature in the area is getting a bit run down so they deactivate. Or, as we have done, we are seeing that we aren’t getting that many hits any longer (after two years of finds), so we voluntarily archive to give some other cachers the opportunity to use the area for their creativity. Also, I know that some cachers just know their maintenance ‘limit’ is only a handful of caches, therefore as they think of new cache placements, they choose to deactivate less active or less popular ones so they don’t end up with too many to properly watch and maintain.

It’s all in the opinion of the cache placer.

If you’re looking for geocaching-logo stuff, go to the main geocaching.com page and look on the left hand side. You’ll see a box labeled “Gear”. Here you’ll find clothing, accessories, car clings, and even some cache-hiding containers—all with the geocaching logo.

Thanks to Alan and Jeremy for their hard work. This is a volunteer task, yet they take this just as seriously as if it was a major work outage. Sometimes my IT don’t move this fast! 😕

in reply to: What are your thoughts on this? #1764739

We witnessed this a few months ago. We went to post a find for a cache and noticed a new team post that they found it the same day. The included pictures of them with the cache standing right at the location. We sent them a friendly e-mail welcoming them to the sport, but letting them know how the picture gave a little too much away. They replied thanking us and stated that they were just so excited with their first find ever that they didn’t really even think about it, therefore they’d remove it promptly. We closed the loop by thanking them and inviting them to some upcoming events. They didn’t seem offended at all, and we think they were actually thankful that someone reached out to welcome them and ‘teach’ them a bit.
