Maybe I’m just missing the obvious here, but what do you mean by seed cache?
Wow, what a great little system. Can’t wait til the new WGA website is up and running with the section that will allow more of this rescue to happen.
First, let me start by saying what a nice, civil discussion this thread has. There is a lot of differing opinions, but everyone has stated them clearly, concisely, and in no attacking manner. KUDOS!
I think our approvers do alot and approving caches is not as simple as many newer cachers think. One discussion we’ve had in our household is regarding the amount of caches a ‘new’ cacher puts out. We’ve seen instances where someone gets the caching bug, completes 10 caches, then puts out 3,4, or 5 of their own. They have little experience as to the styles and really have no idea what it takes to maintain a cache. Many people feel they can maintain many caches when they are still so new at the sport/hobby that they really still don’t know all that is involved. We’ve often wondered if there could be some type of ‘orientation period’ where new cachers can only have so many approved within their first 50 or 100 finds. Then, after they reach those milestones, they’ve personally learned alot and their continuation shows interest and dedication in geocaching.
I know there are both hiders and seekers and don’t want to squelch the enthusiasm of either. We need both to make this work. Good hiders become that way from experience…experience from the geocaching workshops, learning from other geocachers, and just being out on the trails.
Just took a little two-month caching hiatus. Wanted to take a break so that there could become a build-up of new caches closer to us again. With the warmer weather, we’ll be getting back out and about soon.

We’ve taken our GPSr on commercial planes many times. In fact the last time we hooked it up to our computer (which we have MS Streets and Trips) and watched which cities (large and small) that we flew over.
We have had ours through the x-ray machine many times and have had no ill effects.
Well our numbers break down like this:
Within 100 miles = 4508
Filtered = 4129 (YIKES!!!)Within 10 miles = 101
Filtered = 26I’m begining to think that we have a lot of work ahead of us!!
We’d be interested if our qualifications fit into the ones you are looking for. We didn’t know if each of the bullet-points were mutually exclusive, or if the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ones fell under the first one (not IE or Firefox users).
We use IE and are both fairly computer/web savvy (about 8s on a 1-10 scale). Just let us know if we can help. We’re excited for the new site to become active!
The annual WGA picnic is held in August, usually mid-month or the 3rd weekend of the month.
CONGRATULATIONS! We’re excited for you and hope this little guy brings you lots of happiness!
Congratulations! We wish you lots of happiness with your newest little addition. Hope to meet Marah on the trails this summer!
Jonathan,
We are very sad to hear of your retirement. You and your family have contributed a great deal to our sport and our area. We personally want to thank you for all that you have done.
THANK YOU!!
You will be missed. Our thoughts will be with you.
Please keep in touch…you know that we all read these forums!Bill & Steph
This topic always gets my goat….I will hold my tongue and answer pcfrogs query:
I been to the “cache of the month” page but I seem not to be able to find a place to submit a cache for the next round. If this is on that page could someone point it out?
To nominate a cache scroll down the cache of the month page to where you see the listing of caches for that month. The last option is other. Select this one and enter the name of the cache. It is that simple.

Just to clarify from a non-profit perspective, you can have ‘extra’ money at the end of the year. You don’t have to spend everything you have. In fact, if the WGA wanted to have a separate account to ‘save’ up for some big expenses (like GPS units and/or nice park benches) that may not be able to be purchased until you have a year or two of savings, that’s ok. You just have to account for it clearly and be open to your members about it.
In fact, there might be a good idea in budgeting to make sure we are ‘in the black’ by a certain percentage or dollar amount each year just for savings and big purchases. Then that gives the board a goal for fundraising and special money-making events (like the geocoins).

I love the thought processes going on here. As someone who’s worked in a nonprofit environments for 10 years, all of them involving fees-for-service and fundraising, I tend to look at this from a business perspective. We’ve had other threads talking about how the membership wants WGA support (GPS units for training, training materials, etc.). Hopefully, that has given some guidance to the Board as to what the most vocal members want.
Now we need to know the plans and the actual budgets. Does the board have a goal? Not only educational and activity-wise, but dollar-wise. What is our financial status? Can we know that more regularly, maybe semi-annually? Maybe a summary of the financial report posted on this site. I know it’s shared at the picnic, but sitting in a lawn chair hearing a summary of the revenue/expenses is not very thought-provoking, just educational.
If we want to fundraise, people need to know what the goals (both financial and activity) are and how we are spending. If we want to have fees, then what do they get for the fee? How does the WGA plan to use those fees? I like benefits and objects for myself, and shared resources for the entire group.
The WGA is young and has served us very well. Now that the membership has grown and volunteers are spread throughout the state, maybe the new board can really do some goal-setting. With goals, we can all work for those. Fundraising is simple with a passionate group like we have, provided communication is there. One suggestion we have made before is to get sponsors for our picnics/campouts. Illinois had a local sporting store and Garmin sponsor a picnic. Sponsors see this type of thing as cheap advertising, yet we could get give-aways plus some funds for just putting up a sign or display at the main picnic area.
Keep the thoughts coming! Any board greatly appreciates feedback from members as it helps in making the best decisions!

Hey Bill, we loved that cache. It was so neat to see the drawing on the GPS! I’m surprised nobody has copied that cache in the area to bring us another one.
