My wife’s family had a tradition of gifting a boxed rock. Each year somebody else got it. If memory serves, my mother-in-law originally put a rock in a box to add weight for a rather light gift to my father-in-law. Somebody must have thought that was cute, and kept it going. I never had the honor of receiving the thing. If I had, I think I would have taken it down to the creek and tossed it in and put an end to something so goofy.

You can find them pretty cheap at army surplus stores,

I have to go along with a small shovel. I could have used one 2 winters ago. I didn’t get stuck in snow, just couldn’t get over a little hump of packed snow/ice at a boat landing. I couldn’t get a big enough head start to make it over and moving ahead to get that start would have put me in the river. Luckily I had a sheet of 1/4 inch plywood in my truck and I was able to get up on that to make it over. A bag of sand might not be a bad idea either.

I wish I had a multi fuel vehicle today. I could actually pay $.10 more for E85 than I can for regular unleaded.

Anyone here run E85 in their car? comparing E85 and regular fuel mileage on many different models on http://www.fueleconomy.gov/ it looks like it would actually cost you more to go the same distance.

WOW! It looks like $1200 and up per year for the most part to use E85 over regular gasoline. Of course it depends on miles driven.

If one is just interested in possibly finding out, or at least seeing, who might be doing this sort of thing, the idea of employing a trail cam has come to mind. Of course, I wouldn’t go out and buy one just for that purpose because they can be quite pricey, but if one had one maybe for hunting purposes, it could be put to use year ’round.

Come to think of it I have heard of a practice of temporarily burying people in a cemetery just to give them some “time” there, before exhuming them for cremation or other such disposal.

I heard or read the same thing a few months back. If memory serves, I think the “time” was for decomposing purposes.

I have to agree with TyeDye. Just burn me when my time is done.

My check will be in the mail on Friday. The wife is out of town and has the checkbook. If this will be a problem, I understand.

I saw two stations today in Milwukee at $2.15/gallon for regular unleaded. Both were on Brown Deer road between 76th street and 107th street.

Correction!! The prices I reported were for E85.

    I did pay $2.14 9/10 today though.

I thought that if I played a guy in last night’s game, that would have set my roster for the week. And I didn’t even realize that there was a game last night until about 3-3:30 yesterday. I got no one to blame but myself. I should have played Torain like I was going to, but I figured that I would wait one more week. 9 points. Not bad. Too bad I won’t get them. Now he’s done for the season. Oh almost forgot, thanks for agreeing to that trade with me Cheezy. You must have some kind of powers to have seen that one coming.

in reply to: Searching for benchmarks #1897379

I have found a couple of benchmarks, but I haven’t made a point of “benchmarking”. Every once in a while, I just want to do something a little different, so I might search out a benchmark. When I do, I make a point of not searching for one that has been found by a cacher, or one that has been found in the last few years. I get a lot more satisfaction from finding one that hasn’t been updated or found for say 30+ years.

I don’t know how those who benchmark (serious ones) operate and post, but I was always told to be as specific and as accurate as possible when reporting. In fact, I almost sound like a surveyor on my posts. You also don’t want to destroy, molest, or move any benchmark or survey markers. That is against the law.

I’m sure that I speak for many who search for benchmarks when I say that I feel greater satisfaction when I find something that has been buried and overgrown for decades, than I do from being a first to find on a cache.
