Welcome back. I hope you’re not the one to blame for all of the rain.

in reply to: Puzzle caches: when to archive? #1891032

I’m not big on puzzle caches myself, but I have a thought for future puzzles.
How about looking at similiar puzzles in the given area, see how long they have been active and how many cachers attempted them. You can maybe get an idea when the action really starts slacking off. Maybe pick a number for find/dnf logs and then archive it when that number is reached. Or maybe archive it the summer (or whatever) after the number is reached. That way the winter solvers can still have a little time to find it.

According to recent articles in some of the state’s news papers, the 13,000-14,000 bears in Wisconsin has doubled. Seems the WDNR has miss estimated their population.

Okay, so he lost his license………..still has the car…..and the keys ❗
lets get a few more signatures on this.

Changing the law to confiscate ones vehicle won’t be enough. It will also have to be illegal to own, rent, lease, borrow, etc., any vehicle. As far as I know, there is no law that says I can’t own a vehicle even though I don’t drive or have a license or am even too young to have a license.

I hate to say it, but is there any common finders to these cahes? Maybe a POed cacher that spent a lot of time searching and is holding a grudge. I think most of us have seen an area pretty ripped up at times from frustrated cahers who may be inexperienced or short of patience. I really hope that this is not the case. I just hate hearing about these things. I hope that you find out what is going on. Personally, I would rather spend extra time and even multiple trips searching for a clever hide and or container, than the old micro in a pine tree hide. Good luck.

Don’t get too discouraged. With all of the flooding that we have had over the last week or so, I am sure that there is a lot more on people’s minds than caching. There has been a number of caches in my area that I have been wanting to get to, but I will have to put off until the ground dries out some and maybe even the skeeter population starts dropping.

Cool! Whenever I see something like that (and that’s not too often) I never have a camera with me.

Great job Bec. Maybe you will serve some inspiration to me. Keep up the good work.

Almost made it today without rain. At least this one moved through quickly. Looks like we might get some though.

I too would like to offer a hearty congrats. I started last year but right now am only going after pages along a route that I am traveling. I would like to go after more but between the high gas prices and two vehicles that are aging and need work, I think it’s wise not to get too far from home.

Well the rain stopped shortly before 5:00 a.m. by us. No rain for the rest of the day too. I hate to say it, but the sun has even been out for the last couple of hours. I hope everyone is doing ok after this latest round of storms. Once again, we got about an inch of water in the basement. We can’t complain about it though, there are many others a lot worse. I hope we can all start drying out now and get some of our sanity back.

Furfool, we believe you… we live up that way and have a friend that lives very near where you said and she hears them howling almost every night!
Have you checked the DNR wolf pack charts? They are even recognized on that in the Three Lakes/Hiles area.

There has been no talk about the cougar in that area this year so far but there are lots of places for it to hang out and not come near humans up here.

    TE

Being from Milwaukee we never get to hear about any cougar sightings up that way. We will if someone knows somebody from the north. I have been going to that area for over 30 years now, and have always thought that the DNR must be nuts to say that they are not present in the state. I don’t have to tell you that once you get off and away from the roads, that it is an awful big wilderness up there. I find it too hard to rule most anything out of these areas.

Mrs. TE, wouldn’t that swamp furfool mentions be kind of where the snowshoe cache is located?

I didn’t have any good reference point while taking my photos, but they are definitely wolves. They were huge, our first sight had us thinking “deer running across.” Coyotes are half the size of wolves. We have seen them on highway 51, too. I don’t know if coyotes and wolve’s territories overlap much or not. Down near us, coyotes are the norm, but there are established and well-tracked wolf packs in the Black River State Forest.

According to my calculations, it was about 2.4 miles north of Esker In The Kettle (GC10MPG). Taking 32 south, there is a small off road parking area on the east side of the road shortly after passing Whitefish Lake. There is also an old hunting trail just north of this parking spot on the opposite side of the road. It was down this trail where we had come across the wolf.

Are those coyotes or wolves? We saw one last year when we were driving up to our cabin and my husband says it was a wolf. I wasn’t so sure and thought it may have been a coyote. It looked like what you have pictured and was just walking calmly along Hwy 51. As for caching….I’ve seen a few deer which are cool no matter how many times I’ve seen them. No bear ….. yet…..

They look like wolves to me. Reminds me of a time about 6 maybe 7 years ago. A buddy of mine and his girlfrind and I were doing some grouse hunting just off of hwy 32 between Hiles and Three Lakes. We were down in a spruce swamp and as he was stepping over a rather large log, a wolf jumped up and took off from the other side. Our first thought was that it was a ‘yote, but when we saw how big the thing was, there was no mistaking it. I wish we had a camera that day. Almost nobody believes us.
