We were in Three Lakes for a week in August and they were virtually nonexistent. Down here though, I can’t wait for a good freeze. I’m hoping that all that rain ran off of Wildcat. I took my son to drop a TB on Sunday, and were nearly carried away. And we were on a gravel path in the wind. It looks like at least 2 cans of Off. Thanks for the info. Hope to see you all on Saturday.

A lot of cachers have their own private collections of coins. They will take them to events and let other cachers discover them and look at them. I love coins, but I don’t have any. Because a lot of them have been stolen, they are now using pathtags to trade with. I am going to order some one of these days, but I haven’t come up with a design yet. Another cheaper alternative is the wooden nickle. Some people collect these as well. My son being one of them. I think what happens with some of the travel bugs is that people lose them. I haven’t heard much of them being stolen, but one never knows. I am sure it happens. The logs though, that’s a new one to me. I have taken a couple in the past only because I was replacing ones that were completely filled. The cache owners then told me to just throw out the old one. Who knows, maybe one of those goofy names will become President and that log will be worth something. Don’t know any other reason.

Don’t know what to make of it. I haven’t heard anything like that before. I have heard of TBs and coins disappearing though.

If I were one of your counselors Slash, I would have taken your compass away and left you there.

It sounds pretty good to me. Heck, all of the variations sounds pretty good.

I have not been to any other states organization’s websites, but what do they say about non-resident membership in Minnesota, Michigan, Illinoise, or Iowa?

I never heard anything about this. Thanks.

Ok. I may be ignorant here, but what is the big deal about jeeps????

What about treating nonresidents kind of like a U.S. territory. They could become members and have a representative on the board but have no voting power. They would be able to make suggestions and voice their opinions. When wanting to put the best product you can out there, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have more viewpoints. There are a lot of good perspectives out there and I kind of agree with all of them. Unfortunately, you cannot keep everyone happy all of the time.
As for the 16 years of age or older, I’m not sure.

My wife better not catch wind of this one. She already thinks that we all belong to a cult. Now she will know the truth.

It is pretty bad when public tax dollars pay for all of these lands and services and one still can’t use them in fun ways. It is the same way with DNR owned lands, city parks, county parks, etc., and other government owned lands. As far as I am concerned, there should be no reason to have to file a notification form with a land manager. Do you have to file one if you are hiking on a trail on a DNR owned land? Of course not. Go into a state park and you need a park sticker on your vehicle. You don’t need one on your bicycle if you bike into one (not that I am aware of anyway) and you don’t have to wear a wrist band if you walk into one. Public rest areas may not allow geocaching because the state DOT is worried about liability. Maybe they should mothball them all together. Someone might get sick after eating on one of the picnic tables. Or maybe a child will fall down while running around during that stop and stretch period on that long trip. There are a great deal of waysides out there with no running water and soap to wash up with after using the facilities. All of that possibe E-coli contamination is just screaming “the DOT is liable”. Maybe they are concerned about vandalism. I felt really naughty numerous times after picking up garbage that was lying around after it was so meticulously placed. Oops! I hope I didn’t just implicate myself.

I’m sorry. Once I get started… A lot of frustration with lack of common sense from government and their departments and agencies.

Good luck getting a picture. If you are anything like me, that opportunity will never present itself as long as you have that camera with you.

To anyone that is caching and may be afraid of bears and don’t want to encounter one, just talk, sing, whistle, etc. as you walk along. They will hear you coming and leave before you ever know there was one around. If you do encounter one, don’t turn and run. Stand tall and make yourself look as big as you can. If you have a jacket on, open it up and hold onto it while spreading your arms out. You just made yourself look almost twice as big as normal. Don’t make sudden moves. Make yourself big and back away slowly. Be aware of any young cubs that may be with it. You do not want to be between mama and her young. Nearly 100% of the time they want absolutely nothing to do with you.

Would like to, but not quite sure yet. That’s two weeks after school starts here and I don’t know what the kids schedules will be as far as sports or any other activities go. Will update you as soon as I can.

in reply to: eagle attack – photo sequence #1877127

I saw nearly the same thing once in northern Wisconsin. During the early evening, a small flock (about 5 or 6) of geese start making a racket. They are flying like crazy. Then I noticed a bald eagle, I’m guessing about two hundred feet above them and about a quarter mile behind them, coming after them rather quickly. You could see them getting closer together in their formation and then they just kind of rolled over at the last moment when the eagle came in. They got back together right away and really started hightailing it. The flock veered one way except for one dummy (probably a young one) who decided to go his own way. Well needless to say that the eagle went after that one. It was even actually pulling away from the eagle too. But during it’s second time around the lake you can see that it was getting very tired. The eagle had climbed a bit and just took a dive at the goose. You could see the eagle’s legs out in front of it getting ready for the kill, and just before striking the goose, the goose just folded up and did a nose dive into the lake. I thought for sure that the eagle was going in after it, but it pulled up at the last second. The eagle flew off to sit and watch from a tree, and every once in a while, it would leave it’s perch and kind of fake a move towards the goose.

That was one of the coolest things I have ever witnessed. I was rooting for the goose yet at the same time couldn’t help but want to see the eagle claim it’s prize.

I suppose at one point I could have yelled and tried to scare the eagle off, but thats nature. I could never interfere with that.

That was one sight that I will never forget.
