I do take issue with cachers submitting votes for caches that they have not visited. One has no basis for endorsing a product they have not used, nor a cache they have not visited other than a nice cache page or a popular cache hider. That is not what this game is about. Votes on this basis will take others to pill bottles dropped at the roadside. If one has no knowledge of the quality of the location or the hide, one should not be telling his fellow cachers “You gotta go see this one.”
❓
So I go to the store… I want to buy a flashlight. I don’t need to buy one; but I want one. I’ve never owned a flashlight before. All I have to judge the flashlight is by the packaging and trying out other peoples flashlights. There are, of course, different types of flashlights: micros, regular sized, extra large, even flashlights with many different lights on them. I have a good idea what kind of light I want to buy, but I still have never owned one. I’ve used other peoples flashlights many times before so I have a good idea what makes a good flashlight. Though none of those lights are here at the store where I’d like to buy one.
Now, should I not be allowed to choose a certain flashlight because I’ve not tried it out before? Or could I use my judgement and determine which is the best flashlight available, and buy that one?❓
A cache is not just a box or container in some place. There is more to a quality cache than that. How would my Submarine Series have looked with one liner cache pages. Shouldn’t the cache be taken in its entirety? What about those folks who search a cache but don’t read the entire cache page? Should they not be allowed to vote? It’s an endoresement, yes. And a geocacher can choose to endorse whichever cache, whenever they want, for whatever reason, without feeling a bit of guilt for it. If my geocache is a “pill bottle dropped at the roadside” but the cache page and the puzzle needed to get to it are phenominal, then I have just as much right to win COTM as the next cacher. And I will welcome any and all votes for my cache; even if you haven’t visited it.
I know some of this was touched on in our discussions as a board. The majority of the difference is in the fact that anyone who has ever in the last five or so years since the site has been active had to have an “account” on the new site. This was to preserve the archives and old forum posts. So anyone who’s ever posted, even if just once in November of 2003 gets an account as a WGA Friend here on the new site.
The other folks that fall into that category are: Out-of-staters, Doubled up accounts not reconciled (one member account not matched with a separate forum account), duplicate accounts, sock puppets, forum spammers, etc.
The more accurate number is (obviously) the WGA members. And with the new site, these numbers will fluctate as the account/membership will drop off the “active” list after a year of inactivity here at the site.
There are still some issues that will need to be addressed eventually as well, regarding a more accurate accounting of our membership , but first things first. Lets get the new site broken in!
Testing…. testing…
This thing on? ❓ ❓

Too bad you left out jthorson and The Lil Otter…among others!
Oh don’t worry, they’ve not been forgotten. This is just the first round of recognitions. We’ll be happy to accept “nominations”. Until we come up with something official, we’ll be taking them on a case by case basis.

I will always speak up for Magellans… When I first started caching, I didn’t want to buy a whole dang GPSr so I looked at a craddle unit fo rmy Palm m515. Magellan made one and it got me to my first 96 caches.
While perched on the side of a cliff signing the log for the Door County challenge final, I realized I needed to get something a bit more rugged as I’d almost smooshed the thing between rocks and myself several times.
I bought a SporTrak Map. I wish I could say I found every cache I hunted with that thing, but then again I don’t think anyone can… Yeah the Maggys have an overshoot issue. But you get used to it. And I always, always, always have a better, stronger signal than the garmin folks who are stopped behind me cursing their unit and wondering why they can’t get a decent lock…
After Over two years of faithful service, my Map got a crack in the screen… still works, I just needed a reason to get something bigger and better. Enter the eXplorist XL.
The largest screen rugged GPSr on the market. I love it. Admittedly It is lacking a few features I would have like to have seen, but for the screen size and the mapping and limitless memory on the SD card, I can’t go wrong. As far as signal goes… I was getting a strong WAAS signal and 11 satelites inside the Welckers Shelter at Penninsula on an overcast day. Beat that Garmin.
I will agree wholeheartedly that Magellan Customer Service needs to be returned to this hemisphere. “Rita” was not alot of help when I had a software issue with my MapSend 3D. As far as Magellan replacing a GPSr that go trun over by a car… well… Magellan users are usually smart enough that we don’t run our GPSr’s over with our cars. Duh.
I’ve not had a problem with Magellans and will stick with them as long as I’m happy with them. I did do alot of researching and reading and checking prior to deciding to purchase the eXplorist XL. I even had a couple of Garmin’s pegged as possibilities. But in the end, I’m sticking with a sure thing.

There was a sample of a decon container at the Saturday registration table.
The key word here is was.
I borrowed for night caching on Saturday. I like the idea, though. We’ll try to throw something together next time.
Thanks!

I guess I’d just re-read the logs from others and determine for yourselves what you can bring along. Be prepared for anything. The way that Otter set this up is what makes this cache a true challenge. The terrain will present different challenges to cachers. A wise choice would be to divvy up some of the specialized equipment amongst the group so its available, but not everyone has to have thier own… ropes, inflatable rafts, machette (will come in handy with the thorn bushes in full force, carefull though!), etc.
There’s no real secret here, just do the boy scout thing and Be Prepared!

Now, what about other caches in the area. Just in cace we have time left over for more…..
Everyone do their own queries, etc? I think that would be the best.
Good Luck! We were pretty exhausted afterwards and didn’t get many others in that day — although there are several nice ones in the area.

We’ve not been actively working on this as other items have been in the forefront. However we would always welcome design submissions.
I think we can all agree that the present logo has served our organization well over the last 5 or 6 years. But as the WGA grows and changes, I believe the logo should reflect our growth and change.
Any submissions are always welcome.

Emily was very well behaved at the hiding day! There will be dozens of other kids there to play with. Many will only be able to tolerate a handful of caches and may want to spend the remainder of the time playing in the sand or on the play equipment at the campout. However, to bring this right around back on topic, my kids ofen will be happy with a bucket, shovel and some driveway gravel. They’ve spent entire camping vacations digging up the gravel on the campsite and sifting it into sand, then selling the rocks to the neighbors!

Shall we write you in as a “Will Attend” then?
One of these year I will do this. However right now I would have a difficult time minimizing my camping gear to keep me and the family happy and still have room for beer. I think once John can walk well enough to carry a twelve-pack we’ll make a go of it!

Uuhh… No.
Just go and enjoy it! I’m thankful for geocaching because that’s how I found out about SNA’s. I can live with only having the other 99.999% of the state to geocache in.
