I’m sure someone closer will respond soon, but I’ve got a few thoughts here.

This is a great idea! I’ve been doing this for the past two years at our annual Labor Day Campout at Devil’s River in Maribel. My focus has been for my kids and my cousins, a total of nine of them. I will always go out as the sun rises on Saturday morning (note: I am not a morning person, but this is always worth getting up for). I’ve placed around 15 caches each year.

One year I bought a bunch of cool toys on clearance and just camo painted the packaging, hiding the toys themselves. Last year I borrowed the method we use at our WGA sponsored events, Stamps!

The advantage I have is I only use one GPSr, so there isn’t a lot of worry about entering coordinates or paperwork, which I could see might be an issue with several GPSr’s. Instead of entering them by hand, a laptop could help. If you want paperwork, a nearby geocacher could help out with that as well.

Just a couple of thoughts, as I know how exciting it is! Thanks for posting!

I’m sure Jeff R. (arcangl7) will post the complete results soon in a new topic. He is the current administrator of COTM/COTY, so I don’t want to steal his “job” and post the results here (even though I can see them).

The votes have to be checked one last time… also there are more comments on the winning cache that he can choose to have displayed on the COTY page.

Yup, that’s the plan. But it’ll have to wait until my meetings over tonight…

But I would have brought yummy chocolate chip cookies to the tribunal…..

Just promise to bring them to the board meeting when you get elected and I might look the other way…

Just checked and yes, greyhounder, you cast an early ballot on 01-01-06.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this one because of the close race so even if you voted again, I’d catch you in the act and be forced to put you before the COTY Tribunal to plead your case.

With the option to edit one’s message is also the option to manually delete the contents of that message.

The option to press a button and delete a message and topic should be removed and changed to edit only.

My comments, whether on my thread or someone elses, are important enough to me that I’ve taken the time to respond. No one should be able to prevent those comments from being read by the community by deleting a thread.

Life is busy, yes; but the board is regularly watching these forums. I myself check here quite often. Do we always respond immediately? Depends on the question at hand. If there’s some individual overseas trying to sell our members questionable merchandise, then yes; the response is rather swift. However, in the past the board has been flogged for “censoring” the boards. Kind of a “lose/lose” situation for the board.

Quite often we’d like to get to the topics with “greater” importance, but instead we seem to be spending our time pissing out these stupid fires.

…why not have the catagory moderators speak for theirs as individuals and for the board as necessary. Divi up the catagories and have each person over see one!!

It’s HARD work I know!!!! And not everyone WANTS to do it, but maybe it would help and reduce future issues.

Moderating these forums fall under the responsibility of the entire board. Dividing them up would only reduce the number of folks “moderating” each forum. And I’d be interested to know how additional moderation would “help reduce future issues”?

and now folks, here’s another reason that some board members fail to jump in on issues… our comments are somehow taken as being not from the member, but from the board. So I give you…

I recall when Buxley was first stopped by geocaching.com and I asked the board if it were possible to let geocaching.com know that many of us in WGA really liked Buxley’s maps.
I was told that they were not interested in doing this. It is one of the first times I questioned what the boards function was if not to help. (emphasis added)

I believe that if there were an overwhelming outpouring of dissatisfaction from our WGA members, the board would be more than happy to help out. As stated, that is one of the things our WGA board is for.

I can only surmise that one or even two member requests to intervene did not rise to the level necessary for board action. This would not, however stop any members from discussing or soliciting opinions on our forums and/or forwarding them to Buxleys/Groundspeak. A search of the forums will show that there was no such discussion… not even a topic started. That’s probably why the board was “not interested” in helping this particular cause.

Oh, and I’m not defensive about it (I wasn’t on the board then.); I’m just throwing out a million or less reasons why (or why not).

I will agree wholeheartedly with the last two posters.

I for one have three caches that, to the average cacher, may look as if I’d intentionally damaged public property. In each of these instances it is (obviously) not the case! While I can’t go into details, I’ll say that in one instance, I purchased an identical item which I modified and replaced with the one that was there. (Yes, I am storing the original to swipe back out for when that cache is archived.) The other two I’ve completely added something that in all instances looks as if it should be there as part of the “structure”. It’s not. It’s my temporary creation that is the cache. I have not tampered with property that is the public’s, yet to a novice it could seem that way. In fact I have recieved emails regarding each of those hides on several occasions asking about them. After explaining the hide in every case but one I have recieved nothing but positive feedback.

I strongly encourage cachers to communicate with each other before involving your approvers. This is your neighborhood. You don’t call the police to ask your neighbor to move his truck or quit blowing leaves or snow into your yard. Likewise lets handle these issues amongst ourselves. If a serious problem develops that can’t be resolved, then and only then should you burden our already busy approvers.

    Now go play nice.

The other possibility could be your “spidering” setting. I recall that one would really bog down the process, while the other wouldn’t be too bad.

Change “depth first” to “breadth first” or vice versa and see if that makes a difference.

    Welcome, KD8BTK!

Glad to see you here. Being from Green Bay, there are plenty of experienced geocachers in your area who would be more than willing to tag along and show you the ropes, give you hints, and reveal the secrets of experience. I’m sure they’ll pop in here soon.

If not, I’m just a stones throw south and I’d be more than happy to meet up and help you work out the kinks.

    Welcome to the addiction!
