Way to go! Glad our families can cache together. The girls really had fun! What’s next? thinks you can get 300 by the next event! That’s less than 5 a day. I can’t wait to see you go for it! Good Luck!

and no, I’m not racing you there…

in reply to: Where were you on 9/11/01? #1747621

I, like many of you, was at work. I work in a machine shop so the best I could do was radio. Luckily, those of us in my area listen to 620 WTMJ all the time anyway.

I distinctly remember that morning driving in to work and listening to WTMJ talk about how “today is National EMS and Firefighters Day.” I thought that was a cool idea being that the date was 911, the same as the emergency number.

Got to work and day like normal until the breaking news told us that there was a “report of a large plane, possibly a 737, crashed into the World Trade Center” We kept working and listened intently. All of us thought this was a terrible accident and oddly enough, couldn’t even realistically imagine that this could be anything but. I remember commenting in my smart aleck way, “now, if another plane crashes into the towers, then we’ve got a problem.”

At around 7:50am WTMJ’s Jon Belmont was live on the air with a witness to the first crash. The gentelman was describing what he had seen. You could hear the sirens and people in the background. Then a muffled explosion followed quickly by the witness’s urgent plea, “Oh my God, Oh my God. Another plane…” I could feel the fear in his voice. The screams in the background only reinforced the chills in my spine and the tears forming in my eyes. I can still hear those people and feel their terror.

Those days will live forever in the memories of those who were able to comprehend the magnitude of the events. The magnitude of the memory and its power, however, rests soley on the individual. We can choose to remember the feeling we had and the deep sorrow we felt; or we can go back to life as it was on 9-10-01. Do you remember the big news story on 9-11 before the planes hit? It was Micheal Jordan’s return to basketball. How different those worlds were, just mintues apart early that Tueasday morning. But sadly, how similar those world have started to become these three years later.

God bless the victims and families of the heroes on 9-11.

Give it a few months, and there will be 200 more caches near you. And you can take that to the bank.

Sounds like Cat has something planned for up here. Can’t wait for the series, Cathunter!

Let me ask this question then.

Why is it a bad thing for someone to go early Friday evening and search for the caches?

    Before you reply,
Stating that “Because the event is on Saturday.” is not a reason why people should not be able to hunt caches on Friday night.

Why are caches hidden and posted? to be found! What is the big deal about finding caches the night before if it happens to be convienient, fun, whatever, etc.

The folks that are getting upset about finding caches early are also the ones claiming we are “petty” about numbers. I just want to go cache! The only worry and pettines seems to be the distinction without a difference about caching on Friday night or Saturday.

Don’t get me wrong, folks. The hider of the cache/ planner of the event has the priviledge of making the rules for the cache. But guess what. I am the WGA. You are the WGA. This is an organization of people and cachers who should do their best to be as inclusize and accomodating as possible. There is no reason for any elitism or name calling.

Brian wants a “pro”? How about…
    – flexibiltity for all cachers involved
    – more time to enjoy the company of other cachers
    – time to cache when its not a zoo full of people traipsing around turning over every tree stump and flattening every green plant in sight
    – more time to enjoy with my family and/or other team members
    – more opportunities for the hider to have thier cache found and enjoyed.
    – as this activity is also one where the socially “behind the scenes” folks can participate, how bout giving them a chance without the “pressure” or anxiety of a public group setting.

The fact that some caches are not placed until the day/ morning is irrelevant as a simple disclaimer stating “cache at your own risk, it may not be there.” will suffice.

I am glad to see the tremendous amount of interest in this topic. I am just having a hard time understanding how the friendly folks I’ve met are having such a difficult time finding a way to expand our sport in a positive direction instead of closing more doors to folks who, like you, just want to enjoy caching in thier own way.

The difference being that a breakfast is a short hour or two meet-up before caching; whereas the picnic or New Glarus type event is a full-day type event with a much longer time frame for folks to meet and greet.

Just a thought, but the reassurance given to every geocacher who ever hides a physical cache is the “Cache at your own risk” sentence and link on the cache page.

Why would/should an event be any different?

    in reply to: Camping? #1758209

Just a note and not related in any way to my last post in the hotly debated topic about pre-releasing waypoints…

We are all camped out from our vacation last week and will no tbe camping this weekend. A huge thank you to those of you who went out of your way to organize a group for camping. I really wish we could go but I think my family will crucify me if a don’t give them a weekend off.

That said I’m really hoping I’ll be able to make it anyway, but that’s still questionable right now too.

If the campers would still like to make use of the canopy, please let me know, as my offer still stands and I will be willing to work something out. (Might even be an excuse for me to head down there without the family )

I am glad that wzbt03 brought this up, as I’d almost forgotten about some of the thoughts expressed by many cachers at the New Glarus event.

    [tongue placed firmly in cheek]
Team GeoPink is the “guilty” party who had the audacity to seek caches placed prior to the official start of the New Glarus event. As a result the event was a complete disaster, ruined by the inexcuseable misbehavior of this rogue team of ne’r-do-wells. It is a surprise that the event even happened as a result.
    [/tongue removed from cheek]

The caches were there. The waypoints were known. We were camping in the area for an extended weekend. The event made for an excellent time and place to do some caching with my family. We had a great time and enjoyed putting more faces to more names of some of our Southern caching neighbors. I will make a few points here so please be patient and here me out.

    1) I have a large family. Team GeoPink consists of myself, my wife and my four daughters. (and soon to be increased by one member by next year) The opportunities for me to cache with the entire family are few and far between. Events like this are some of the best opportunities for us to get some “quality caching time” together. That said, we also are not able to progress through alot of caches at once. A morning or afternoon of more than ten caches is unheard of, even in the close confines of a state park. A weekend getaway give us the opportunity to have plenty of time to spend together and to maximize the value of each placed cache by one additional find. The caches are already there! Why shouldn’t we go find them?

    2) To be perfectly honest, while I understand that the WGA as an organization needs to be cognizant of its responsibilities, especially in this litigious society; liability is a crappy excuse. There are a plethora of avenues to avoid liability by the organization including but not limited to:
    – The disclaimer on the cache page.
    – A separate disclaimer in the cache description.
    – A disclaimer used in conjunction with event registartion.
    – A disclaimer used in conjunction with recieving the .gpx file.
    – A disclaimer placed in each cache.
    – A disclaimer signed as a requirement of membership.
    – A disclaimer signed and filed as an option of membership.
This is an option able to be overcome and should not be used as an excuse. Maybe, I am just showing my ingorance, and if so, please forgive me; but in this world of lawyers who wiggle thier way around the legal system every day, I find it hard to imagine one who would not be able to “solve” this little obstacle. To be honest, in the end, if someone’s gonna sue, any type of disclaimer, signed or otherwise, is not going to be a deterent.

    3) The reason we have events is to bring cachers together to cache. By releasing the waypoints ahead of time you would not in any way be thwarting this effort. The caches will still be there. The people will still come. Everyone will still meet new folks. Cachers will still cache. Pictures will still be taken. Cachers and families will only be able to enjoy this for longer and more folks will be able to enjoy the handiwork of the hiders. I as a prolific hider want as many folks to be able to find my hides as possible.

If, as has been stated in these forums, these temporary event hides are “as good as, if not better than” many permanent hides; why aren’t we encouraging and allowing more people to participate in the hunt by finding a way to distribute the waypoints as early, as reasonably, and as responsibly as possible.

in reply to: Event Logs #1758182

My question is this: If after an event, a temporary cache is made permanent and is given it’s own page do we log it again if we return and sign the logbook? (Just a little something else to ponder…)

I think I read somewhere in the gc.com forums once awhile ago that you can only log that cache again within the first month after re-release if you verify the find with a picture of your dog (or other caching partner) holding the secret code word contained in the lid of the final container. This, of course is only allowed if the name of the cache has remained the same or similar to the event cache with an asterick or other character noting any changes on the cache page. Any changes beyond this, of course, should be indicated by changing the cache type to Puzzle/Mystery.
Any FTF dance can only be done if the FTF cacher has not previously found this cache; unless of course they were the First First to find the first time. Hooty-Hoo’s will still be allowed if the finder finds the cache a second time but has not Hooty-Hoo’d the first time. Multiple Hooty-Hoo’s will not be allowed unless first agreed upon by both the cache owner and event organizer. Any further questions should be directed to the approver.

Or you could just do your own thing…

    [on topic]
I agaonzied over this one to for awhile and have come to the conclusion that:
    1) I could care less what other folks do in other parts of the world.
    2) I plan to log each of my event finds.
    3) I could care less what other people think in other parts of the world.
    4) I like seeing the numbers get bigger.
    5) The gc.com forums are not geocaching.

    my two thoughts
