Although we did not participate in the geocaching, we were there camping at the same time as the event. While talking to the park Naturalist, Paul, he nothing but good things to say about geocachers. He mentioned in one of his talks how he encouraged people to go off trail and explore the entire island. He even said he was grateful that geocachers had uncovered a 100 year old oven used by coopers that had long been lost in the deep woods. Hope you guys have fun.

Sorry, no new cahemobile for us either. We were hoping to find a few thousand geocoins for the downpayment but they are hard to find.

in reply to: Garmin 60C vs CS? #1740546

We have the CS model and I think I would buy the C if I had to do it again. The compass sounds nice but mine does not work very well. If you calibrate it often, like every time you get out of the car, it works fine. I am to lazy to calibrate it so often so I end up walking to where the distance goes down, not where the arrow is pointing. Is this the same experience as other CS users, or do I have a defective unit?

Congrats Alan. You were the first cacher we ever spotted on the trail and still our favorite to cache with.

We always enjoy finding books in caches. The Mrs is always reading and she learned about Bookcrossing from a book left by Pharm Team a few years back. She liked the idea and we created out Rest and Read cache for books and other things. We are pleased that people have left books and kept somewhat to the theme. It is also a great place to leave some of our books. We have also found and placed childrens books that our daughter always enjoys.

Happy new year everyone. My family has always been superstitious. For good luck for the whole year, we eat blackeyed peas on new years day. I have been pretty lucky so far.

Our family consists of my wife, 6 year old daughter ,3 year old son and myself. We have cached as a family on about 1/3 of our finds, the rest were done solo. I do enjoy the family but also enjoy getting out in the woods to relax by myself.

When we cache as a family, we strive for maybe 10 caches at the most. If the cache is over a .25 walk, plan on carrying the little one. We have discovered many, many playgrounds while caching. WZBT03 has shown us many in Janesville that we still go to in the summer. We also let one pick the restaurant for lunch and the other one gets to pick dinner. We also take turns on who gets first pick on the ammo box caches. Towards the end of the day when Daddy has to get “just one more cache”, Mom and the kids usually stay in the car and I hit the woods.

Somedays it’s hard to get them out of the house but I believe it has paid off. They are very at ease in the woods. When my daughter goes out on Girl Scout hikes, she leads the way and has no fear of getting lost. Most of the girls get afraid when they lose sight of the lodge.

We used to have a cache at the top of a nice sized hill in Kettle Morain South. The kids loved climbing it to check the cache. Most of the time they would shout out army slogans while running up it (I like old war movies). It would crack me up when the kids would run past a 10 year old couch potato yelling “up the hill, up the hill, who wa, get some, it’s a good day to die, huh!”. I know they will look back and remember all the good times we have had together as a family.

Just out of curiosity, what was the final coords for the mystery cache? We tried a couple of different combos, but always ended up in the middle of a field somewhere.

How about Lake Wissota. I have never been to Eau Claire so the area would be new to me. With so many caches in the area, I could take a week off from work to find all of the presidents. Also, it is close to the city for all those Trudy campers.

I was wondering if this included the Washington DC cache. Will this one be available soon?

in reply to: Gearing Up: What do you haul into the woods? #1747420

I guess I am really under supplied when I hit the trail. When I go, I carry:
    Gpsr
    pda
    carkeys
wallet (with whatever spare money Cindy can part with)
small cache toys that can fit in my pockets
    pen

In the car I have a backpack with:
    small flashlight
    spare bateries
    compass
    water
food for lunch (I don’t stop for food, I just eat while driving to the next cache)
    more cache toys.

Thanks everyone!! It was kind of nice to ditch the kids on the folks and go geocaching (on my birthday no less). I think it is the only time I get to spend time alone with Mike… ha ha , Cindy

Congrats to Astro-D. I seemed to be following you all day, yesterday, through the sub series. You really don’t have to re-hide them that well
