MemberI’m still working on the delorme challenge, but some practical limitations have kept me from getting it done. I was pleased with a great adventure several weeks ago as I covered the South West corner of the state on the way back from IL. I think it was 8 pages and 6 counties that we did that day. I also was able to go through IA and see some neat stuff. And I have to say – if it wasn’t for the challenge (Delorme and Counties in this case) I probably would not have had the guts to plan it out and do it.
It was so worth it though. I think I found maybe 30 caches the whole day and drove a total of 11 hours but we (my son and I) saw some memorable stuff and had a great time together. Sure I could have driven the normal 4 1/2 hour trip home and seen the usual boring drive but the time was well spent.
I’ll make it there someday! I totally understand the crave for numbers. I still get that way sometimes. But I’ve gotten to the point where the magic of the numbers has started to wear off and I’m more tuned to the other challenges – like getting my D/T matrix filled out and some of the other long standing challenges. But even moreso I’m more tuned into the fun of the place and the cache itself. And seeing new places. And there are more out there that in time, will outlive the numbers chase and start looking for a different experience. The Delorme is great incentive for that. Thanks for keeping it alive, Splash! 🙂

MemberThanks, guys! Rib Mountain is one of my favorite places in town and there are so many great caches to look for there. My first cache up that way was Rick Wiltzus’ spare rib – that was my first time up to the quarry. There have been many visits since and I can’t wait for the next one. It’s alot of fun up there! And my boys love exploring up there as well. So even though I had considered several options for 2k, some more adventuresome that others, we ended up with something close to home that we could enjoy with family and friends and remember other fond caching experiences up there.

I find most roadside p&c caches at 55 to 65 mph, and often from a mile or two away. It’s how I like to clear those pesky icons from my “nearest to” map.
Get with the times, GR, use Google Earth Street View like all the “pros”. You save gas AND the environment 😛

MemberReplace the ScaleChange function with this code. (In Firefox, after you have the regular script installed, click the greasemonkey down arrow and select “Manage User Scripts”. Right click “Geocaching.com – Image map scale” entry and select Edit.)
function ScaleChange() {
var feetperpixel = 513592.6516 * Math.cos(MapSettings.Map.getCenter().lat*(Math.PI/180)) / Math.pow(2,MapSettings.Map._zoom);
var milesperpixel = 97.27133 * Math.cos(MapSettings.Map.getCenter().lat*(Math.PI/180)) / Math.pow(2,MapSettings.Map._zoom);
if (Aprox(feetperpixel) >= 5280) {
document.getElementById('scaletext').innerHTML = Aprox(milesperpixel) + " mi" ;
$("#scale").width(Math.round(Aprox(milesperpixel)/milesperpixel)+4);
}
else {
document.getElementById('scaletext').innerHTML = Aprox(feetperpixel) + " ft";
$("#scale").width(Math.round(Aprox(feetperpixel)/feetperpixel)+4);
}
}Optional: I wanted the scale to be wider. It seemed way to small to get a real idea of how far away something was. If you want a wider scale as well, change the line in the Approx() funciton that says :
number = number*90;to
number = number*200;or whatever multiplier you want.
Save the script and refresh the map page.

MemberI suppose I should say something nice….
I do like the “Pocket Queries” tab on the map now and that it limits the results to the items in the query – unlike before where it showed ALL caches and flagged the qualifying ones with the little google bubble.
So, thanks Groundspeak for that one.
There. I said something nice 🙂

MemberActually, I modified it to use feet and miles… NOW I’m satisfied! 🙂

Try this => http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/126456
Found that it works on Firefox, SeaMonkey, and Chrome.
Yes, that is great. Thank you for that reference! I feel satisfied now – at least until Groundspeak makes the next change. I think it’s dumb that we have to install BASIC features separately on every computer we use when we pay for membership to this thing. What a nuisance.

MemberDave, can you elaborate on your suggestion to use GSAK? I certainly don’t have a problem with that, it’s just that I’m not sure how GSAK replaces the mapping functionality. The only thing I can think of is exporting a GPX file from GSAK to Google Earth – but that only gives you a satellite view with alot of labels clouding the view. I rely heavily on the map browsing capability and not sure how to leverage GSAK to do that.
I LOVE the ease of integration now available in GSAK thanks to the new API and obviously filtering is more that thorough, and you’ve helped me use GSAK as a better tool in the past through your posts here.
Can you elaborate on your suggestion?

MemberWow, thanks for the help! I ended up using http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/125926 for chrome which gets me the maps but still no distance legend. I’ll see if I can work on that. The google maps API is pretty easy to use. But this is a step in the right direction ….. for now.

MemberSince it took me a while to find it….
While Geocaching has been a worldwide activity for now over 10 years, there still seems to be a need to educate those not involved in the activity of what it is all about. There are multiple resources available to explain the game, both the physical and the social sides of it. The Wisconsin Geocaching Association maintains a web site wi-geocaching.com as a Wisconsin contact. In addition, Groundspeak hosts the main listing site for the game at http://www.geocaching.com. A clarification on the article stating that there are 15,000 caches hidden in the Beaver Dam area: there are currently listed 436 caches within 20 miles of Beaver Dam. The 15,000 may have been determined using a 100 mile radius default setting that was on the listing site.
The WGA has worked well with the WDNR as well as many Law Enforcement personnel and continues to develop education materials to further explain the game. These materials are available on the wi-geocaching.com web site.

MemberI just did some math. Since I registstered GSAK (there were several I found with the unregistered version) each find has cost me about 2.2 cents in GSAK registration fees – yeah, I’d say that’s WELL worth it.
Altogether using GSAK, I figure about 1.5 cents per find.
Thank you, Clyde!

MemberWow, Dave! Thanks for those insights – yeah that’s some pretty big wins! I didn’t realize the Bookmark thing but that is fantastic! And the status updates for potentially archived caches will save me some time and frustration too!
Thanks for the information! 🙂
And I agree, this is software and a developer WORTH supporting!
