In the past I’ve used a GSAK macro to create a KML for Google Earth and that has been very useful. Your approach here is even more useful as it also does shading, has the center point (GZ), and a description. The macro JUST does circles.
I would use this.
GPX would be what I would use. I could see including the diff/terr levels in the info as well, or perhaps on the balloon popup that you mentioned. A link to the cache itself is also very handy. (Would of course only apply to caches, probably not child waypoints).
Would be cool to be able to make the map resizeable with the window.
Real nitpicky but I would prefer to have a crosshairs icon or “X” icon instead of the red Gmaps merker. The marker gets in the way IMHO and the crosshairs are cleaner and plainer.
And I assume this is a given – but a way to upload the relevant GPX file 🙂
Looks cool, thanks for your work. Those google APIs are fun aren’t they 🙂
Police say “you should always be careful when hiking near a cliff.” Thanks, officer. You’ve made the world a better place today.
Wow, way to go, LR!
My family and I went up that direction several weeks ago and I was looking at this series at the time. Unfortuantely, the weather was cold and rainy and I didn’t think we’d be up for a 2 hour walk through that… someday though.. someday!

Blrp Blip geh urt… Sorry brain going a little haywire processing the self-defeating statement. 🙂 Sorry, found it amusing.

It dims after a few minutes anyway I guess, but yeah, that would be nice. There were a few times I wish I had even 1 spare but those were on days where I had forgotten to charge the unit the night before. 🙂
Now have a thread at:
http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=12937&st=0&#entry86100I have also noticed that my GSAK macro is no longer lining up with reality. The Delorme Challenge calculator at http://delorme.ikrug.com/ is correct by GSAK is not. I’ve been using the macro consistently without trouble. But it’s defining pages to the caches that don’t make sense. The macro and the calculator are definately not using the same set of pages. I’ve got the latest version of the macro. I made sure my database and filter were set properly.
But for example, cache GC10CGM is in Wausau – BLack Granite Bay cache (my first find). It’s definately on page 64 according to the online calculator. But it’s on page 70 in GSAK. According to the calculator, page 70 is over by Hudson (North of hudson).
What gives ? Any insight? Thanks everyone for the help!
Thanks from us too, OPS. You’ve said what many of us are unable to put to words 🙂 What I think my kids will learn (ages 2 and 3) from geocaching is that video games and television (while fun) are no match for the awesomeness of the outdoors and God’s creation. And Geocaching is a great way to explore that and the human experience by visiting historic places and seeing the past left there for us.
Thanks, everybody, it’s great fun. Looking forward to the next 1000 🙂 It’s been fun meeting most of you and especially caching with many of you.
I’ve finally uploaded some photos to my log if you want to go back and check them out. I opted not to upload the “give away” ones though 😉
yeah, that’s a cool series that Choppy Waters has put together there. I’ve got the first 2 legs now and working on the final later this week probably. This was definately a good choice for a milestone. We even got to watch some folks shoot off fireworks nearby when we were putting the boats on the car! Did anyone else have fireworks for their 1000th? Just kidding. I’m sure they weren’t for us 😛
yeah, it was a 3-way tie.
I don’t think anyone mentioned lighters yet. Butane should not be in there, or any other flammable chemical.
And I saw the note about box cutters but I’d include disposable razors with that too. Found a cache in door county, opened the cam and pulled out the log book. The boys started digging around in th swag and my 1 year old pulls out this disposable razor! NOT COOL! Fortunately the cap was on and I saw him with it right away. I was not pleased about that though. Also found 2 lighters on that trip. DC is a dangerous place to cache apparantly.
And sorry if this was already mentioned but also pocket knives (even the small ones) or anything that could be considered a weapon. It’s almost to the point where – if you can’t take it on an airplane, don’t put it in a cache.
The last thing we need in the sport is for people to start discovering contraband in caches. I was in steven’s point last weekend and saw some used homeade bongs near GZ. That’s bad enough.

I know you said any type of food, but animal treats, run across dog treats quite often. Had some coffee in one found recently..
Anything that can rust – pencil sharpeners(put a byop warning on the page instead), buttons, etc.
Paper products not in a baggie.
rust? What about the ammo can itself… it will rust. But I know what you mean. I remember opening a metal cookie type can taht had about an inch of brown water in the bottom. But it wasn’t the contents, it was the container itself rusting out.
The pencil sharpeners are actually a great thing to have becuase inevitably the pencil breaks. As long as it satys in the bag with the log and pencil, it should be ok.
Yay! Way to go!
Hi folks, thanks for all the kind responses. I’ve been away from the forums since the event… went on vacation, had other things going on…. etc etc. but thank you. In response to Fu’s question, the Wausau Daily Heard had an article published ON THE FRONT PAGE in Sunday May 3rd issue. It was sort of in the corner at the bottom but it was there 😉 The link on Van’s Clan’s post is the same article. And thanks, Dale for the photo. I’ll have to get that on Facebook 🙂
It was a pleasure to do the organizing and the turnout was very encouraging and the amount of work done was encouraging as well. I’m glad we got to get the name of the WGA out there a little bit more and give caching a good name as well 🙂
